Why does almost every single article on the web regarding this story refer to the Windows source code as "Microsoft's crown jewels" ? Microsoft's golden pile of shit is more like it.

Well the leaked package itself isn't that bad.  It's well organized by directory.  BUT, there's just too much: too much software, too many modules, too many "include" dependencies.  In other words, bloated.  As we all knew already.  :D

The code released is about half a gig, wheras the full code is 40 gigs. It's enough to rewrite and start an open source alternative, yes.

The full code ain't 40GB.  Whoever first said that must've meant 40 million lines (~600MB).  Because 40GB of code is over 2 billion lines.  That's impossible.

What confuses me is how the fully compiled code can shrink by 1/80th, unless the rest of the code includes the patches.

HAS anyone seen anything on the news like cnn or anyone reporting on this? i would be curious how far reaching effects this has and how much it is being talked about outside this circle.
