help on gentoo linux 2004.2 installation

(1/2) > >>

MrX:
due to the shitty installation handbook, ihave gotten stuck on step 5 section 5.d.

this is my first time with gentoo
i am doing a stage 3 with the universal live cd. no internet connection.

then , i need to install portage. but - since those idiots who made the guide dont like to think that a newb might be doing the install. i mean, it would be impossible for an average linux newb to install gentoo following the instructions exactly.

and it seems that since i need the stupid internet to donwload and unpack a portage snapshot (i seem to need this to install everything else)
is this portage somewhere on the universal cd so i can freaken get this installed!

so far i have partitioned the disk and unpacked the stage3 tarbal.

Mr X

WMD:
The Universal CD should contain a Portage snapshot.

MrX:
yes, it should but why would  the handbok not tell me where it is on the cd. i dont know where it is.

Orethrius:
I just read the first post, and I have to ask, you are planning on connecting this system to the 'net at some point after you install Portage, right?  Otherwise, it's kinda pointless.

MrX:
yes, that is correct. but- you see the problem is that each time i want to hook up another computer to the net i have to reset the cable modem
(im from the cable modem to a hub, and i get two IPs from my ISP and have two computers hooked up to the hub)
and the computer is in my room and the cable modem is way the heck in the kicthen on the floor.

and it is expected that you can install an OS without an internet connection? i dont think that microsuck would be the best place to ask about gentoo help problems. better check linuxquestions  :tux:
