Playstation 3 to ship with Linux
« on: 12 June 2005, 20:09 »
"Gamespot.com is reporting that Ken Kutaragi, president
of Sony Computer Entertainment, has disclosed in an interview that
Playstation 3 will natively run Linux. In fact, it will come bundled
with it, if you purchase the HDD peripheral." From the article: "But
while Linux would require a hard drive to run on, Kutaragi told Impress
PC Watch, 'We're not going to equip [the PS3 with] a HDD by default,
because no matter how much [capacity] we put in it, it won't be enough.'
It was unclear whether he was referring to the previously known fact that
the PS3 would not have an internal hard drive or whether he was
indicating that the device would not come with the external 2.5-inch
detachable HDD outlined in the specs revealed at E3."
Windows [n.]
A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.

I don't know which is better news, Linux on the PS3 hard disk or the hard disk inside PS3.

I've heard from PS2 owners that memory for the PS2 is a pain in the arse.

Yes, as I said in the Xbox360/Mac thread this will be a big reason for me to buy a PS3 instead of a Xbox360. I've also rethinked a lot of points like supporting MS and using their closed OS etc. With the PS3 you will obviously be able to use a lot of os:es like Tiger, PS3 and maybe Gentoo. With the Xbox360 I would have to buy a modchip to do something like that.

I also heard a rumor that the main PS3 OS will be based on linux. Is that true??? That would be awesome.

yeah....but from what iv been reading, unless your an ASM god, the xbox 360 will be the fastest system. it has a wicked tri core ppc 970, that supports some form of multithreading. so it will look to the os as 6 cpus. sony's hardware is traditionaly known for being a real bitch to program for. the cell, like the emotion engine, will require some grotesque work on gcc to pump out optimized bins for it. however the playstation three would probably be better for editing media, and the xbox360 would probably make a great server..........just hope microsoft keeps up there good work with security so i can do such things to there boxen
