Originally Refalm set things up so everyone had neutral rep when they joined but for some reason he changed it to positive, because of this all the really old members have blue squares. I personally disagree with this so whenever an old member returns (providing they were at least half decent) I always positive rep them.
Another reason for having a blue square might be that someone without much rating power has negitive repped them after they were made positive. Rating power depends on your status and your current reputation mods probably have the highest power and trolls have none.
A black square means someone has disabled their reputation - I believe onlyn the mods and VIPs have this option.

It's a ridiculous system like postcounts and regdates. Does nothing for the general well being of the community, except put an emphasis on epenis nonsense.

Yep. I don't what VIP does aside from give me access to the friends forum. Perhaps that's a perk from being a moderator for a time.
