Title: Word.
Post by: HibbeeBoy on 31 May 2002, 22:50
I am trying to help someone invoke M$ Word. When the user invokes the application, PC goes into freefall and has to be rebooted. Did the uninstall, re install process. Why the phuck would that happen ? Word processing has been around for 20 years, surely to phuck they could get that to work ?? Or am I expecting too much ?

I expected too much out of Windows when I was young... you just can't expect anything from it, except formatting and reiinstalling

So, M$ can sell Office for $300+ per copy and if it doesn't work, I have to accept that and move on ?? Say it isn't so. No, once I have explained this to tech support, I am sure a refund check will be mailed out with a sincere letter of apology enclosed from Mr Gates. The last time I had to return a defective product (a kitchen appliance) the supplier took care of it right away. I am sure M$ are no exception.

thats hilarious! MS doenst care about any of its customers. They will probably sue you just for saying that their product is defective. There is a free office suite that is better than MS office, Its called openoffice. OpenOffice 1.0 is free. StarOffice (the proprietary version of Openoffice) has a couple additional features and costs only $40. www.openoffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org)  www.staroffice.org (http://www.staroffice.org)

And OpenOffice ans StarOffice don't support the majority of Macros.  Macros a bits of code tha some people use to make their documents look better.  OpenOffice and StarOffice not supporting the majority of them is a really good thing though, seeing as macros are one of the most common ways of spreading viruses on the Windows OS.

OpenOffice is about 75% compatible with MS Office files.  It would be more if it weren't for the macro issue.

Oh and MS Office usually works.  But MS hardly ever listens to its customers and loves to keep bugs under wraps so that no-one knows about them.  In this way they don't fix most bugs.  Office XP still has some bugs from Office 97.

about the refund... i doubt you will get anything. According to the windows EULA, if you buy a computer with windows pre-loaded you can get a full refund if you:
1. turn on your conmputer
2. read the EULA
3. turn off your computer
4. remove windows
5. go back to the store and ask for a refund.
6. if ^that doesnt work go to microsoft for a refund
7. if ^that doesnt work sue microsoft

What a bunch of cynics on here ! As soon as I am put through to tech support (I am currently on hold-have been for 35 minutes) I am sure all this will be straightened out in no time. In fact, I am willing to bet that it is something stupid I did to cause the problem or the PC I bought is not up to snuff or I didn't insert the installation CD wearing an MS Certified polo shirt. Oh yes, it won't be long now. I am have been informed that my call is VERY IMPORTANT to them. You will see.

Yes well you obviously are wearing more than your fair share of rose coloured spectacles. 35 minutes? useless. And as you saw earlier, the EULA that you agreed to when you handed over the money for this software does not require Microsoft to give you any help whatsoever.

You did one very stupid thing. Buying Microsoft products, because you can say bye bye to your money and time right there.

I feel very sorry that there is no way for you to prove that they have dealt with you fairly. When you get no help from them, and after a few days of being given the runaround. You could still come back on here and say how great they are because you are too embarrased to admint you were wrong. M$ does not give a shit about you. Face it.

OK then, what was the eventual outcome of this fantastic service that was worth waiting so long for?

Well, we'll never hear from him again, that's for sure, because he won't admit he was wrong. I betcha.

That guy reminds me of Rincewind, with his "I'm sure there must be some reasonable explanation for all this" attitude...

it's funny, i never actually noticed! this happened on another forum i moderate too! we have a really prolific poster guy and i lapped him! he was quite shocked! I feel a bit guilty actually  ;)  as i think it behooves me to shut up a bit since i am a moderator and all that crap, but then i think, aw who cares!  :D

Anyway, you've been quite relaxed of late, i like to think that you're doing something more interesting than posting on forums, and not something more tedious and urgent!

Hmmm, running into a few problems getting to talk to anyone at the moment. After being on hold for so long I had to hang up without speaking to anyone. I'm detecting a bit of hostility towards M$ here but I think that M$ should get a chance  to amend their problem (if it is indeed their problem)so I am going to give them a quick call today. I think I already know what they are going to say though. Format hard drive and reload windows. Can't get fairer than that. You would do the same with a brand new vehicle right ? If the blinkers weren't working you would take the engine out and put it in again.

Hmmm, I think you're right. From what I've heard these are the Microsoft Eradication society forums. Could it be that you're detecting a bit of hostility towards M$ because of that?  :D

Remind me to do that next time I change the oil, or change the sparkplugs.  :D

I don't know whether to flame or laugh with this guy. Since he's most propably pulling our leg, I think I'll just stick to laughing my heart out  :D

Oh it's no joke, Word will not work. I have a very disgruntled user who can't type up the menu for the staff picnic. The one duty she has all year. The confusion this will cause is beyond belief. People are not foing to know whether to bring the salad or dessert etc. I am still a bit concerned that the consensus here seems to be that once you buy the product (or any M$ product) you are on your own. My boss is having a hard time getting his head around this concept. The way this board has so eloquently informed me, if I buy an M$ product and it doesn't work I should not be surprised ? Surely not. There is not a company out there would be allowed to do that. Not in the USA anyway. Still on hold by the way but I am in the queue and my call will be taken in the order it is received.

i am willing to accept that you are having trouble getting support from M$, but your subtle tongue in cheek comments about 'hostility' and especially the one about the blinkers certainly shows your hand.

Welcome onboard, fellow cynic!  :D  Do you really support hibs?

I have a work around your problem.  Have each of the employees bring a dish thats name starts with the first letter of the employees last name. There is a chance you could get a duplicate dish or two but unlikely.  Then download and install a copy of OpenOffice for next year's picnic. Send your copy of Word back to Microsoft and demand your money back (don't count on getting it though). Open office can be downloaded from http://www.openoffice.org/ (http://www.openoffice.org/) for free.

I'm actually in Los Angeles. I'm originally from Leith. I see the Pars took Brewster which is a shame for Hibs 'cos he was doing a decent job for us. Not scoring goals though but still making an impact.

Anyway, I am going to give up on this Word problem. I can't waste my day waiting on them answering the phone. I'm not going to the picnic anyway so I don't give a f**k.

that's the spirit! might as well get either OpenOffice or 602ProOffice anyway, they are both free, and can both be installed easily, even on windows.

Well I am not so sure about deploying shareware Corporate wide but I am going to check it out. I can't tell you how many times I have said to my boss "I don't know why it crashes, it just does." everytime he gets the old "fatal error" message. And the funny thing is, he sticks by M$ products. It's a strange argument you get with him when you point out how shitty it performs but he still backs them. He probably has his pension fund tied to M$. HEY ! Have I just uncovered a conspiricy here ? Are all IT managers promoting M$ because they have shares in it ?!!
I am going to continue with trying to get an answer about why Word doesn't work when called from the Start/Programs icon. If I am told to format the disk and reload, I will bombard Gates with junk mail using his own prepaid postcards.

well 602ProOffice, is shareware, although, if you can do without the M$ access clone, you get a free lifelong licence, not sure about companies though,

Openoffice on the other hand is freeware, and opensource GPL too, this is a big difference, because companies can use it, and if you have somebody competent enough, you can modify the source code too, so long as you are prepared to distribute the new source for free also.

I hope you enjoy those, if you want an alternative to M$ word that costs and has full support and so on, then go to the Sun Microsystems site and get StarOffice, very similar to openoffice, except that it's made by Sun, so they charge for it, and they support it.

Cheers for the info. M$ has to be stopped !
Just been informed, reformat the hard drive, reinstall windows etc. Who knew ?!! This is an outrage !! There has to be a better way. They also said that the "Normal.dot" (Word Template) can cause problems. Oh yeah ? So why don't they f*****g fix it then !
BTW, you might want to warn people there's a picture of you on your web site. My 3 year old got a glimpse and now she won't sleep with the light off !  :D
