For just Windows, there's Media Player Classic (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_players/media_player_classic.cfm) which is basically WMP 6.4 with all the features and none of the spyware.  There's also VideoLAN (http://www.videolan.org) for  Windows, OS X, and most distributions of Linux (with sources available for those that haven't been precompiled already).  I recommend the latter, but the former isn't half-bad either.

VLC is a great all-around media player.  It will play just about anything thrown at it.

Apparently there's a beta version of MPlayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html) for Windows too, though I've never tried it.

Maybe we missed the point here, but what are you trying to play with alternative players?  If it's the new-standard WinMedia, it won't play on anything but WMP (though VLC's developers are working on support for it).  If you're looking for pop-ups, then yes, they lack that "feature."     :D

EDIT: If you're referring to the "news" feature that phones home every time you open it, then yes - they lack that.  I'd think you'd use your favorite news site for that, though, not some software that tries to be everything to everybody and fails.  If you're referring to the burner... *ahem* WHY are you using a player that actively utilizes DRM in its own media?  Aren't you the LEAST bit concerned that it's passing those on in every CD you burn?  There's a reason why people use MP3s and Ogg-Vorbis, ya know.    ;)

It's not really shareware, it's kind of like Winamp. There is a fully functional free version (which does  more than most players), and a pro version which does some more.

And what's wrong with commercial software? As long as it's good software, and has a resonable price ...

Nah, there are good commercial software, namely iTunes, Opera, Winamp, etc.
But, I saw "BUY" and I was like, woah dewd!
