I have a solution. Don't click Extract. Better yet, get that nasty vermin (Win*) off yer machine before it does more nasty things. I think that was just a warning shot over the bow.

Sadly, i play games that need 98, windows 2000 doesnt do that but its still a crock of shit. If anyone knows where to get "Intel 810 3D excelerated X server" sourced from i would be happy. Then i can get the Linux ports of my games running. YAY
then windows can..............................

It must be you or your machine. We've never had any problems with WinZip before.

Yeah, once or twice. If I had a spare Pentium, I'd probably give Mandrake another go.

Do a dual install, and i have slackware running on a 486. Try Red-Hat Linux, you seem to know a bit about computers. So red-hat would be fine..

I don't have any games running on my linux boxes with i810 chipsets, but I remember reading that XF864 was supposed to have OpenGL acceleration on that chipset.  Is it just not as good as, say, the GeForce stuff?

For maybe four months I dual booted win98se and linux, until one day I gathered the courage and said goodbye to MS software on my pc. I havent looked back since, and have found so many excellent alternatives to MS products available. This route isnt for everyone, but it worked well for me, and its been 10 months MS free.

Get Zipcentral at www.zipcentraliscool.net. (http://www.zipcentraliscool.net.)

Free Winzip clone, works for me when I have to use M$ (not very often admittedly)

yeah, getting rid of windows completely is the only way for anyone. windows is addictive "o, i can do this one thing so much quicker in windows, fzzht reboot" so i ditched windows after a year of dual booting. i find that winex is the best solution for gamings and i have never had winzip crash. now i have had problems witha capciters/*i hate those damned things*/ i have two dead 500mhz motherboads sitting around. i was thinking about buying a capiciter to match the blown one and just unsoder and resolder it to the board o well.

Even better...

Try WinRAR.  You should be able to find it at Downloads.Com, and it absoltely kicks the shit out of WinZip from my experience.

(EDIT: Christ, I didn't read enough of the post.  Sorry about that.)

still, WinRAR is ace. Also, it is totally cross platform, you can get 'MacRAR' for mac, and 'rar' for linux (and i think it's open source too) MacRAR is graphical, and rar is console/text only, but is really easy to use, and all those versions are compatible with each other, although certain compression techniques used in more recent copies of the program may be unreadable if trying to open using an earlier version. (i am finding that my MacRAR is more recent than my WinRAR and is fucking it all up for me!)

i am more running linux and dually booting windows when i *have* to.

windows just holds the keys to too much shit i like (games and such)

fucking bloated bastard

never seen winzip crash, but that happens a lot in windows... hard crash to reboot.

i'd rather see a memory ticker than a damned BSOD, cuz then i can just go right back to linux without pushing any buttons

If i could, i would dual boot with win98. I have about 50 games that need windows, most of them wont run under WINE (havent got one to work yet). But i am too lazy and windows is too shitty to not freeze while isntalling. I have tried about 4 times to install it.

in that case you may as well use WinRAR. I hate to say it but WinRAR and MacRAR are superior by a long shot to rar (the linux version), since they support many formats including lhz (winzip needs you to download severla plugins from "your favourite download site" (quote from their instructions)) to get lhz and several other formats to work) natively. Also, they open the .rar file format, which is better compression than ordinary zip.

The only thing winzip can do that winRAR cannot is span a single file over several disks. And i'm sure that winRAR could be used in wine too...
