Title: my list of gripes with redhat 8
Post by: HPC GUY on 13 November 2002, 06:45
#1 xmms will no longer stream online radio
what the fuck?! none of the drivers want to work now.

#2 K on CD is shit. i have had nothing but trouble trying to burn right. 7.3 didnt seem to have this problem.

#3 No kill app command on on right click.

#4 cannot ctrl+alt+delete in gnome

#5 Cdrom now absolutely refuses to eject unless the drive is manualy unmounted and god forbid K on cd fucks up. then you CANNOT get your cd out unless you reboot.

#6 Mozilla dominates all browsing and it doesnt come with java plugins. so several pages come out fucked up.

1. go to www.xmms.org (http://www.xmms.org) and read the first fucking thing on the page (if that is whats wrong)

2. use xcdroast

3. what the fuck are you talking about? I dont have that button on rightclick

4. use KDE!

5. do you have it setup to automatically unmount CDs?? and use xcdroast

6. Konqueror, Galeon, Netscape, Lynx, and Links (are you expecting internet explorer or something!?) come with RedHat. Or you could just download the fucking plugin for mozilla!!!!

7.3 used Sawfish as the Gnome Window manager I believe. RedHat 8.0 used a new window manager called  metacity in the Gnome side. You can set limited number of keyboard shortcuts (even to CTRL+ALT+DEL if you want) by clicking "Preferences">"Keyboard Shortcuts". Now there doesn't appear to be a way to add more commands from that shortcut tool. I've also browsed around "gconf-editor" and found where you can add shortcut commands but I haven't actually gotten it to work. KDE should still work fine and you should be able to configure the keyboard shortcuts as you always have. I find the Gnome side to have far fewer features than KDE but I sort of like the simplicity of it.

"ALT+F2+xkill" always works for killing an app with your mouse. I don't know about koncd as I don't use it and I actually don't use Xcdroast either. I've always preferred to burn CDs (and most everything else) from the command line. You might also try the "eject" command which should unmount and eject your CD in one swoop.

You can change your default browser by clicking "Extras">"Preferences">"Preferred Applications".

Hope this helps. For what it's worth I was extremely dissatisfied with RedHat 8.0 when I first started using it. But within a couple of weeks I have learned to like it more than any other version of RedHat and more than any other distro period.

Also could you give me an example of an internet radio site that does not work with XMMS in RH8 that did in XMMS with RH7?  I would like to explore this. Danka.

Actually your first note after using RedHat 8.0 was extremely tame compared to mine. I vowed to never use RedHat again.  (http://smile.gif)  The post is floating around here somewhere, just search for lotsa swear words.  (http://smile.gif)

Guys If I can get RH to play the stream radio from Vh1.com , I will be in 7th heaven raised to
infinity.

So far, when I go there and I log in, the pop up window (which is supposed to be the "radio" window if you will) is just blank.

I havent had the time to see whats going on exactly and how to fix it, but I sure hope there is a remedy for it. Unless they vh1.com are MS Nazis.

Damn you have the same problem as I have trying to get JazzFM, it's WiMP only. Time for a polite e-mail.

Edit : No I lie they claim to support Realplayer too. but that is all - and realplayer was put there for the Mac users. No mention of Linux so far.

Why are you all cluttering up the lounge with your logic and intellectual nonsense? This should be in the Linux section!

ok, moving now, and macman you really need to put your signature on your netfirms account. none of your other hosts are any use for remote image linking.
