Title: Firefox 3
Post by: Aloone_Jonez on 29 August 2008, 17:07
I've just got Firefox 3 and it's quite good.

I like the way it now zooms images and Macromedia flashes and doesn't loose your downloads between sessions.

I'm still going to use Opera most of the time though because I love speed dial too much. I know it could be implemented by designing my own custom home page but with Opera I don't have to bother.

I hate that zoom does images and shit now, I just want to get text so I can read a long article sitting back in my chair - I didn't want it pushed into a horizontal scrollbar. There should be an option for just text or both and there isn't. It's kinda pathetic.

So what's your favourite browser now?

You obviously don't know how to use it properly because there's an option to zoom just text.

Firefox 3 is my favorite browser, my second favorite is a tie between IE7 and Safari. Both those have an annoying issue where they ignore middle clicks if a javascript says a link should open in a new Window, both Microsoft and Apple have not put much thought into my middle mouse button.

IE7 is easily one of the most secure browsers around without running untrusted ActiveX.

I've been using Firefox3 as my primary browser since a month before it's release.  I had tried using the alphas and betas, but there was an essential feature missing on the Mac - keyboard shortcuts like cut and paste didn't work in dialog boxes.  It was fixed in the first release candidates, and I've been using it ever since.

Just about the only thing I don't like about Firefox3 is the default theme.  The default for the Windows version is actually very nice looking, but the Mac default is this hideous all-brushed aluminum thing.  I've been cruising for replacement themes, and I picked up a Camino clone last night which I am very pleased with.

Other browsers I have installed: Safari, Sea Monkey, Camino, Firefox Minefield (custom built), Amaya, Flock, Opera, and Webkit (test build of Safari).  They mostly get used for testing stuff.

Testing what? Other peoples websites? I'm not aware of you doing any design.

I don't exactly have a mailing list that I send out to announce my personal projects (many of which are experimental).  For the most part, though, having that many browsers is kinda ridiculous, even for someone who is doing professional design contracting.

Funny you say that, someone wrote a speed-dial add-on for FireFox  (Y)

I just looked up the Firefox Mac theme, it does not look to bad, but it looks like they tried way to hard to make it look like Safari.

And Safari looks like shit.

(so does osx)

I just get sick and tired of the grey and metal sometimes.  I want some color in my browser.

Is there an extension that gives a similar functionality to notes?

I find Opera notes handy because they allow me to can engineering symbols and responses to questions I get asked repeatedly on and electronics forum I visit.

I've just downloaded the speed dial extension and clippings and so far so good.

I don't know if either will work with the next Firefox version which is why I'd rather have a fully featured browser rather than relying on potentially buggy extensions.

Usually shit only breaks with major updates, like Firefox 4 etc.

Similarly, I don't want those crappy features in my browser, which is why I'd rather have an infinitely extendable browser rather than relying on a shitload of useless overhead.

I'm not sure, but I think one of these may offer what you are looking for

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3970

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2011

While I do like the fact that FireFox is so expandable, there are some features in Opera that I find neat, like the Speed Dial function.

Extensions I use, most of which would be kinda silly to include as basic browser features:
Colorful Tabs
Copy Link Text
DOM Inspector
Download Statusbar
Duplicate Tab
Faviconize Tab
Palette Grabber
Tab Scope
Web Developer Toolbar

With Opera I don't need any extensions and the browser alone is still smaller.

However, generally I'd a agree that extensions are a good thing, it's just the way they've been implemented in Firefox is pretty poor in my opinion.

I tried IE8 beta 2 today, nothing seems that interesting about it or new.

Well, the developers of IE wanted this:

But as always, the upper management doesn't like Microsoft employees doing innovation.

I know a lot of people who got scared of the IE7 interface and moved to Firefox so I can see why. People just don't like change.

It looks pretty childish and cluttered too.

The security features look promising though.

IE8 that is out has coloured tabs and stuff to protect you from phisherman.

I think FireFox 3 isn't too bad. Only thing I don't like is the amount of resources it tends to use.

I've gone back to Opera.

Firefox 3 is far too slow. I don't know whether it's the extensions I installed but it takes muck longer to open pages than Opera.

Interesting. Looks like microsoft is trying to move things over the the Office 2007 layout. I took a survey for Microsoft and got a sent a free copy of Office 2007 Ultimate ($300+ retail!). The completely different layout kinda surprised me at first, and I couldn't find anything. It is not to bad that I'm using it more often (for school now), but I think it should be better once they transfer most of their other apps over to that look.

I hate Office 2007. I can't see anything I'll ever need that Office 2003 doesn't have, so I'll use that for the rest of my life for all I care.

phoenix 0.5 was the best version of firefox so far. small, fast, functional.

If that version was compatible with these plugins and extensions (yes, even i use a couple) then i might still be using 0.5 today.

So use Epiphany (http://www.gnome.org/projects/epiphany/). It's a browser with the Gecko engine that is using the same plug-ins as Firefox, and has similar extensions, without the bloat.
Title: Re: Firefox 3

without the same degree of compatibility though, and my main problem with epiphany is that it has much less control over what data/cookies etc are stored and for how long. Firefox, Opera and Mozilla win this battle. Even Ie beats epiphany in this area. Epiphany is good though, it's preferable to dillo when i need a fairly small and quick browser with no bells and whistles.

It's also annoying as fuck as every new tab opens the home page when you just want a blank tab.

yes, i almost killed myself by strangulation with a guitar string after accidentally drinking a glass of arsenic instead of a cup of coffee, and it was all because of the emotional trauma of seeing that epiphany home page. Before i had even had a chance to change it in preferences i had actually died, it was so stressful, so if anybody can recommend a cure for that, then please reply.

Yeah, I don't see what is so bad about it loading the hompage. Woo a few extra KB of data transfered, not like it makes a difference.

It's just annoying because you have to wait for it, or get half the address you typed wiped by whatever the homepage is.

Firefox 3 takes more work to customize than 2 because it has way too many built-in features. The url history display is really annoying. The only way I could find to kill it was delete all built-in bookmarks and set history to zero days. The appearance is cluttered compared to version 2.

Having more than one profile in OSX isn't easy either. The profile manager is hidden inside an executable and has to be accessed from Terminal.  /Applications/firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -profilemanager

Then you have to uncheck the box for bypassing the profile manager at startup, otherwise you're back to the default profile.

With 2 profiles I can run Firefox2 with all the proper addons and Firefox3 with its proper addons, without gunking everything up at each restart.

again, did you even read my post?

someone like yourself, who's always parping on about how much they know about kernel infrastructure, network security and memory management should probably be able to figure out how to change the homepage to about:blank in the preferences dialog of your browser.
