Title: Today's MS Bloatware Eradicated - Works 2000 Suite
Post by: sixerjman on 12 April 2004, 22:42
Well, after 3 hours of research and failed attempts at uninstalling, reinstalling and uninstalling, I finally found a brute force method of getting the dormant and unused Works 2000 Suite off my hard drive so I may have enough free disk space to install some software I actually want to use, like programming tools...

...At least I THINK I finally got em off the drive and out of the registry.  Used a couple of handy DOS scripts from MS themselves, something called wks2kll.exe and a 'Windows Installer Cleanup' utility.

<*rant on*>

The very existence of these tools is MS's tacit admission that the MS Works 2000 software is flawed and that a brute force solution must be employed to even REMOVE the software using the standard ADD/REMOVE function, and that solution could only be found after some searching.

Installing Microsoft bloatware on a hard disk is like stepping into a room with wall to wall fly paper on the floor, I just wanted to get out and free up some disk space, not learn the intricacies of setup launchers, registry tasks, and a host of "cleanup" utilities designed to stitch up the sucking chest wound that is MS application software.

<*rant off*>

just installing OOo will not automagically remove it.

he HAD to go through those steps to remove it from his box, before he could install OOo.

The way I understood it is he wanted to remove all the unnessacery bloat but keep using Works.

The reason why it is so hard to uninstall is because they integrate it. It pretty much is a part of the OS once you install it.
