Well, if you are one of those who are sick of XP being such a resource hog, you can do what I did.
Setup progman.exe and copy it to your windows folder.
Then goto your registry to location:
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
and change shell from Explorer.exe to Progman.exe
Make sure Progman.exe is in your windows folder, cos in XP it is in system32 by default.
-
what does that do? i'm a dumb Linux user, excuse me . . .
-
It replaces the default Windows Explorer (MSIE) by the Program Manager from Windows 95.
How to crash your computer:
Open file://c:\con\con in Windows Explorer.
Result garanteed. :D
Edit: I'm not sure about Windows XP, though.

well i replaced it with the windows XP shell. works fine.
then i used a dll to give mIRC a desktop, so i dont even need to use a shell for windows..
LOL, actually im using mIRC as my windows XP shell now.

Erm no offence Emiko but dont we usually bin posts like this? This is an anti microsoft forum remember?

If I'm going to switch to Linux, this is what I should be able to do:
1. Browser
2. Mail client
3. Media Player
4. mIRC
5. FTP client
6. Dreamweaver
7. Adobe Photoshop
8. Sprint DSL pppoe connection
9. mouse/keyboard drivers
10. Geforce 4 ti 4200 video drivers
11. Anarchy Online ( 3d RPG game )
12. Norton Systemworks ( not required )
13. mircstats
14. cheetachat for yahoo ( not required )
Refalm: Even I'm not perfect. Instead of quoting Emiko's message, I edited it. I'm very very sorry, for this mistake Emiko, it was accidental. I tried to bring it back though...

quote:
1. Browser
Linux has around 10 browsers you can choose from and they're all better then internet explorer.
quote:
2. Mail client
Mozilla has a built in mail client, and there's Evolution
quote:
3. Media Player
Not quite sure of the names, but it has some good quality media players...
quote:
4. mIRC
Linux Alternatives: XChat, BitchX, probably more that I dont know about. Or you could emulate mIRC in Wine I believe.
quote:
5. FTP client
Again, Most distros come with about 5 ftp clients that you can use
quote:
6. Dreamweaver
I always thought there was a version of this for Linux. I could be wrong though... I prefer doing HTML in text editors ;)
quote:
7. Adobe Photoshop
The Gimp.
quote:
8. Sprint DSL pppoe connection
Can easily configured.
quote:
9. mouse/keyboard drivers
99.9% of the time you ownt need to isntall drivers for hardware in Linux
quote:
10. Geforce 4 ti 4200 video drivers
See response to #9
quote:
11. Anarchy Online ( 3d RPG game )
Never heard of it. You might be abe to run it in Wine.
quote:
12. Norton Systemworks ( not required )
Exactly right. Antivirus software is not required.
quote:
13. mircstats
Can probably be emulated in Wine...
quote:
14. cheetachat for yahoo ( not required )
Yahoo probably jas a Linux port of that software. Could be wrong. Again, try Wine.
Of course, you could always do a dual boot with windows/Linux :D
-
3. Media Player
VideoLAN (my favourite, sorry Doctor V ), XMMS, Mplayer...
10. Geforce 4 ti 4200 video drivers
nVidia has very easy to configure GeForce 4 drivers. Don't stick to the ones that come with Linux if you want to play UT2003, Return to castle Wolfenstein or something...
11. Anarchy Online ( 3d RPG game )
Maybe through Wine... if that doesn't work out, you can always check out Falcons Eye or even the cross-platform Runescape (going to be in full 3d next month).

Thankyou for the replies. I know mirc will work with Wine, although AO will not run ( yet ) on either Wine or WineX... this has been a long standing debate ever since Funcom, the designers of the aforementioned game Anarchy Online, promised there would be a native linux client for AO madein 2000, and since then it has been said by FC that it will never happen, most likely soemthing about switching out OpenGL, double patches, not enough man hours... etc etc ad nauseum.
I code in mirc which is why I won't choose an alternate IRC client at this time.
I'll keep you posted how my progress goes.

6. Dreamweaver
I always thought there was a version of this for Linux. I could be wrong though... I prefer doing HTML in text editors.
Not everyone likes coding html by hand (I sure don't) and Dreamweaver doesn't run on Linux (at least natively) to the best of my knowledge. There is always Mozilla Composer and Open Offices html composer though. Versions are available for WIndows if you want to check them out when deciding whether to switch. ;) AAMOF I like Mozilla Composer so much that I use it in preference to Dreamweaver when I'm on the public Mac OSX boxes - although I'm hardly a master web designer. ;)
-
Nope. No Cheetahchat for Linux, but you could see if it would work in Wine. Or... you could realize that chat rooms are festering collections of time wasting, useless jabber. But that's just an opinion.
-
BTW, Dreamweaver works almost flawlessly in Wine.

Hey Emiko from Ohio
This is SUSE Linux from BC CANADA
try looking in Linux. Use KDE and really look around.
I went through my list of things I would need to totally migrate from the Cock suckers OS to Linux
I found that it had everything that I needed, and alot fucking more, the last thing I needed was a native gui for burning ISO's....... KDE 3.2 has one called "K3B"
easier than Nero
get a NEW distro and actually look
Im tired of people bitching, Oh it dosen't have this or have that
well it doesn't have a fucking price tag either so
stop your fucking bitching..........bitch,
Fuck me, Eh
-
Possibly a bit over the top there Suselinux.
But I get your point - it is annoying when the occasional person comes along and says "I wan't it to do this" when it can. Oh and "free as in freedom." I paid good money for Debian because I like it so much, and I intend to continue doing so.

if somebody thinks dreamweaver is the only GUI html creation tool in existence (and will not hear otherwise) then you are limited in your options as to what you can tell them.
just content yourself with the knowledge that they will be first against the wall come the revolution.

Actually Gyach is a good Yahoo! chat client, and GAIM is an awesome IM program that encompasses all the major protocols, including IRC.

ROFLMFAO!!!! No serious graphics designer will use The Gimp over Adobe Photoshop. The GIMP just isn't nearly as powerful of a tool as Photoshop.
Has the GIMP ever got CMYK algorithms support yet? I know the version that comes with MAndrake 9.1 doesn't support CMYK. That there alone is enough to say The GIMP is not a professional quality graphics tool.
-
I can say I think the GIMP is pretty good for RGB graphics. But for serious "for print" work? No way.
It is really nice, for freeware. Id say it's at least as powerfull as PS 4.

Or a better idea, you could pop in a boot disk, and type format C: in a command line. Trust me, it will make win xp stop using ALL the resources on your computer. Then after you do that, get linux

And let me remind you that some people will come to Linux already owning a copy of Photoshop, and if they can run it in Linux, why not just continue to use it?
Don't get me wrong, GIMP will serve most users' needs, and it's my first recommendation to anyone that asks. Some people might use picture editing programs sparingly (like MS Paint or even Photoshop), and would have no problem adjusting to using GIMP instead. Others, for whatever reason, think Photoshop is the only program they can use to do what they do (whether that is really the case or not is always up for debate. I can't really comment on it because I've never used Photoshop, and I don't use GIMP very often).
The argument has been made that if someone wants to continue using Windows programs, they should just keep using Windows. I, however, tend to think that even if Windows programs are run in Linux, the fact is, they are running in an operating system far less likely to crash or freeze than any version of Windows, and they are less likely to lose their work.
I've made a bit of a speech about it before on the Mandrake Users' board. I know I hold the minority opinion in this case, but that's just my two cents on the issue. Especially in the case of Photoshop, just from this board, that seems to be the one thing that keeps people from trying Linux. Don't get me wrong, Linux natives should be used if they exist (and 99.9% of the time, they do exist), but some people are too lazy to change, and if they are willing to at least lose the Microsoft OS part of their computing world, that's a huge step in the right direction.
Okay, I'll shut up now.

That didn't do anything here, apparently you need IE4. Running IE4 on Win95 is completely idiotic.

Who said they had to pay for it?

So, Faust didn't just make you up........ ;)
I've heard Photoshop 7 and it's predecessors will run great in plain old Wine. Just google "Photoshop Wine Linux" and you'll find out how to configure it for it (which is easier than it sounds). Same with Dreamweaver.
And to give Linux a whirl before you install it try Knoppix.
