i was going to try downloading beos to see what its like, i give up, every link i find that is supposed to be a beos site such as be.com is a useless searchengine full of ads
-
Moved.
PS. Perhaps you should PM MrX so that he can post in this thread.
He seems to be in love with BeOS.

http://www.bebits.com/bob/17828/BeOS5PEMaxEditionV31b1.zip
That's the one I got.
-
got iso and wrote it, first attempt at booting it crashed when i clicked install, second attempt it crashed during boot, so linux rules!!!
btw: could the dev at least use a normal iso so u can use k3b insted of a stupidly longcdrecord command???????
-
With FreeBSD I always use the burncd command. I seem to like it more than GUI apps. Their all gui and stuff like green gu stuff, it sucks.
-
most gui frontends do suck as far as im concerned but k3b is good

What CPU do you have?
Installation went like a dream when I installed it. They even give you a game of Connect 4 to play while yer waiting :D

AMD Sempron 2400, i hate sempron chips but xp athlons artnd made anymore
-
I have no idea what Sempron is (unless it's the low class Athlons?)...
I know that BeOS only supports very few chips. The official BeOS didn't even support x86 chips, the BeOS Max Personal Edition version you (and I) were trying is some kinda port or something... Or just a different version, probably.
It's not the official one or something, I don't quite understand it myself (as you can see) ;)
http://www.bebits.com/app/3148 (http://www.bebits.com/app/3148) for more info on that ISO. It's the Intel (x86) version.
Maybe Mr. X will come along and clear a few things up for us...
-
As far as im already concerned BeOS is not as good as Linux, linux supports most chips not very few, linux normally has real isos that i dont need to run cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd speed=32 -eject -v -data floppycd.img BeOS5PEMaxEditionV31b1.iso to burn

How does this make Linux technically better than BeOS?
Windows supports more printers, modems and games than Linux but does this make it any better than Linux?

Technically, FreeBSD is better. Then, why am I not using FreeBSD?

Technically, FreeBSD is better.
I didn't think that was your opinion.
Then, why am I not using FreeBSD?
I could say the same thing about Windows.

Semprons are the current series of 32-bit athlons. They gave the Athlon name to the 64-bit series chips.

I can see it now:
"Hello, XXX Tech Support, how may we help you?"
"Yeah, I just bought this Athlon, and it won't run Longhorn."
"Can you tell me what model you have?"
"Um, sure, lemme check here... it's an Athlon XP 2800."
"I'm sorry sir, that's a Sempron, you'll need an Athlon to run Longhorn."
"Wait, the box says it's an Athlon, and Longhorn says it'll run on Athlons."
"I'm sorry, sir, that's NOT an Athlon."
"But the box..."
"Any further questions today, sir?"
"No thanks, I think I'll use one of the BSDs instead."
"You know the SCO Group is prosecuting Linux licensees, right?"
*CLICK*
EDIT: THIS is PRECISELY why I buy Intel processors. If Microsoft starts locking them into Longhorn, then I'll use AMD, but dealing with Stupid Bastards Inc Tech Support is NOT something I look forward to doing.

Hey.
don't start worrying about printers and that. beos is a 'multimedia OS' not a productivity OS, like Microsoft .
dont plan on doing this on beos:
printing, making office documents, digital imageing, playing 'new' games (quake II and lower we have),
plan on doing this on beos:
media (with vlc), music, firefox, mozilla email, quake II, beshare, being cool .
I just installed BeOS pro yesterday and it's pretty fast boot up (faster than BeOS max by abit) although the deksbar froze on me i installed open tracker and then the new open tracker FS and it works good now.
if you wanna know what doesnt work or work with beos, check out
http://www.computing.net and then on the left side hit the BeOS link and browse or search for something and you may be able to find out .
Mr X

making office documents,
Didn't they port AbiWord to it?
-
yeah but who needs that when you have StyledEdit?
-
Well then, I guess you *can* make office documents on it, huh?
-
yeah, but who's gonna? not me.
Mr X

People in many jobs and those in education tend to do lots of word processing these days...
-
MrX, I've told just accept that other people's are often different from your own. I've discussed the why no one uses BoOS thing before here (http://www.microsuck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9245&page=2&pp=25) and I would discuss it again but I can't be fucked.
-
when i need to do word processing and printing i use my moms win98 system with open office.
Mr X
-
AMD took athlons and modified there cores a bit. Pretty much just a smaller amount of cache. The sempron is AMD's Celeron
-
if XXX inc is so bad why did they come out with the first x86-64 CPU
-

Wow, CompUSA / BestBuy / Office Depot / Fry's Electronics / take your pick came out with the first x86-64 CPU? I didn't know that. For future reference, three letters does NOT AMD make anymore than FUBAR makes INTEL.

So even you agree that BeOS doesn't fully fulfill your needs and you need a different operating system to do some tasks, I rest my case.
-
One thing that annoys me is there is a real lack of choice for operating systems these days, you basically have a choice between Windows or UNIX and if you don't like either you're fucked. I don't have a problem with UNIX but I can see why some people do.
-
So even you agree that BeOS doesn't fully fulfill your needs and you need a different operating system to do some tasks, I rest my case.
looks like your case was picked up and thrown all over.
"some" tasks are like any other OS . there are somethings you can do only on windows, that you cannot do on anyother OS. Like, use Radmin .
i dont 'need' to have beos to print and do documents . i don't care if it can or not. that's not what I do in my room. I play games and such. the win98 computer is in another room with a printer.
Mr X
-
Just so we're clear on this, Radmin is crap. What can you do with it that you can't do with (FREE) rdesktop and Terminal Services, or for that matter, VNC? What, chat with encryption? No thanks, I've got Gaim.

Fair enough, many Linux users still need Windows for at least something there's nothing wrong with using BeOS or whatever as your primary OS then Windows for some tasks you do less often. But my case still holds water if you were claiming BeOS fulfils are you neads because it doesn't and I'm not haveing a go at you for it.
so there.
 I give up, I've tried to talk to you like a mature adult yet you still continue to end your post with imature statements like "I rule", "so there", "I think I'm soo good with my 'new' OS" etc. so I've given up on you, from now on I won't bother making decent replys to your childish posts. :fu:

Radmin can almost do 60frames per sec and VNC cannot barely even allow for smoothness. Even with a fast connection it just won't pipe in enough data to be smooth. Radmin is also very easy to use. VNC is not, and I cant seem to find a guide on what the server commands do, what they mean, and what are the best options for different connections.
http://www.radmin.com/radmin/comparisons/index.php?referer1=googleadwords&referer2=competitorsgroup
Although I do applaud VNC for being on practically all OS's and works fine (BeOS VNC works great btw) it's just not up to speed, and a normal nube couldnt figure it out without some help.
This last week ive been trying to find something like a VNC optimisation guide on the net so it can be faster. well I havent, and it's either that the people of the internet are just fine with slow or they don't know how it should be.
After all, you get what you pay for.
Mr X
-
I applaud your effort to totally dismiss rdesktop, but the fact remains that it poses a serious threat to Radmin.
-
how can it do that? it doesnt seem like a nube can just pick up and start using that program right away.
and i've never heard of rdesktop, thanks for bringing it to my attention. no thanks to this scary, scary image that made me sad

Holy crap. It made you sad? Phantom Windows made you sad? Dude, its MAJOR CONNTYPE is Terminal Services. Why would someone make an original logo when there's already one ripe for plundering? ...and I fail to see where it's complex; hell, even the installation procedure is detailed more than most other Nix programs.
