Title: R.I.P. Microsuck.com
Post by: reactosguy on 25 March 2010, 02:28
It sucks to lose Microsuck.com.  :'(

I read the old 1999 version on the Wayback Machine and it was a very worthwhile looking site against Microsoft.

CommonSense (the creator, I think) would have convinced almost everyone to not go Microsoft, and this would've spread alternatives which competitors are losing money from.

You've only just noticed?

Well you did join after the domain name change so that makes sense.

It used to be FuckMicrosoft.com but the webmaster decide to change the name to Microsuck.com after he had problems with papers not wanting to print the domain name because it contained a bad word. I don't like the name Microsuck, but I can understand the need for the change, I prefer Stop Microsoft but this sites never attracted so many new members after the domain was changed.

FuckMicrosoft.com was the original website, that I joined (member nr. 730).

Microsuck.com was a website made by some Mac OS application developers, Pre1 Software (http://www.pre1.com/). Then they sold Microsuck.com to CommonSense, because it's a nicer domainname.

Getting the domain names myself isn't something I can afford, because CommonSense sells them at $ 4000 per domain.

I didn't know that commonsense wasn't the original owner.

I notice he still hasn't sold it.

Perhaps you could now make him a lower offer?

I don't think that would work. I think even $ 1000 is a bit too much.

I don't get it. Why did CommonSense sell the domains when Microsuck.com was so popular? According to Alexa.com, Microsuck.com, despite being sold, attracted 1,684,202 visitors, with 623,189 of them from the US, all on March 25 2010 at 4:30 P.M. Eastern Standard Time (US/Canada). ( http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/microsuck.com (http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/microsuck.com) )

But back to the question, CommonSense wrote this page on Ask Metafilter at http://ask.metafilter.com/71471/How-much-would-YOU-pay-for-Microsuckcom (http://ask.metafilter.com/71471/How-much-would-YOU-pay-for-Microsuckcom) . It said that he had debt and was so busy that e-mail messages had a 5% chance of being replied to. Furthermore, he gets a lot of spam from pro-Microsoft supporters (such as Akronan, on the archived 2006 feedback page).

I also wonder why he sells his domains at inflated prices. The Ask Metafilter page says that he has a lot of debt, but I'm not so sure. Is this really true? I'm very sorry if this is a lot of questions to answer.

Yes, he is in a lot of debt. Those credit cards can be some really evil things.

If he was in that much debt I would've thought he would've sold it by now.

He's not making any money out of Microsuck now is he?

The site was so popular, he could added some advertising for alternatives to Microsoft which could've paid for the site's upkeep plus a little pocket money for him to pay off his debts but he stubbornly refused and decided to leave it inactive until someone offers a ridicules amount of money for it, which will probably never happen.

CommonSense wasn't making much off his site despite the fact that he sold POP Mail accounts for $29 USD and Virtual Host domains for $5 USD.

Those weren't popular. Maybe he could have signed up for some e-commerce site (CafePress.com?) where users can buy Microsuck.com t-shirts, mugs and posters. NOW that would've attracted some attention.

Oh and he had a PayPal donate button at the bottom of the sidebar of the 2006 version of Microsuck.com (through Wayback Machine).

He tried that.

I'm sure I remember a way of being able to donate, I can't remember whether PayPal was accepted or what.

Microsuck.com happens to expire in September.

That, and when I visit it, the nicely organized page saying that the page expired is no longer there, instead Firefox gives me a "couldn't find" error.

There's always this though.

I tried swiping it last year, but it just got renewed again by Commonsense. He should have just redirected the domain to this one.
First he had this ridiculous page asking $ 4000 for the domain names. Now he's just holding them for no reason.

Maybe you should just tell him that it's you and ask him to let go of the microsuck.com domain name, and if he doesn't, threaten to file a lawsuit against him for holding onto the domain. That said, I'm not a law expert.

I'm starting to believe that Microsuck.com combined with its over a million visitors halted Microsoft to much extent.

See this image (http://www.stop-microsoft.org/bbs/index.php/topic,6454.0.html#post_microsuck).

I believe that CommonSense's debt mostly came from his buying so many other domains for the purpose of mirroring the main site, not a lack of advertising.

The amount of debt he accumulated can't justify all those domain names. Even if domain names were more expensive back in 2001.

I don't even care about that, it's more that he didn't even bother to link to this new website.

Do you get charged for higher traffic with your host?

Also mention Microsuck multiple times on the front page to rig search results.

EDIT: Microsuck.org is available ;)

Hi.  You guys want to just ASK me where my debt came from, instead of all this horseshit speculation?

(Hint:  All your theories are wrong.)

It's 2013, and I'm still in debt.  To the tune of about half a million USD.

Someone should be paying a half million for the fuckmicrosoft domain any day now though, right?

Wow I'd forgotten about this site.

It's still running but not very active.

Life blows at the moment but it's not Microsoft's fault, more the recession and my bitch of an ex-girlfriend but won't rant.

Well, life is okay for me.
Lots of games support Linux so I hardly need to boot Windows anymore.

Also, I'm used to the recession. I'm living with the fact that getting a job at the skill level I studied for isn't happening anytime soon.
I don't care, I had enough money for a vacation in East Sussex. And now I'm enjoying Nijmegen's summer festival.
