okay, so if you have some screenshots you want to post, this is the thread to do it! i hereby request the image nazis amongst the ranks of the moderators (i'm one of those too ;) ) not to delete or change any of the image links please, let's have this thread alone for any cool screenshots.
I just started this thread so i could put up some shameless screenshots! :D i haven't actually got any at the moment so here are some pictures off the web to start with.
(http://images.google.com/images?q=tbn:TT-unlamxb4C:www.lart.tudelft.nl/gallery/vt220.jpg) (http://www.davesraves.com/Features/museum1.html)
It's a VT220 running linux! (not mine, although that would be cool!)
Courtesy of VNC, here's X11, running within X11, running within X11.
any more good ones?
These pictures are not that huge, but don't let that put you off...
I'll put up a screenshot or two of my actual computer running sometime soon...
-
www.abysmal-plane.cjb.net (http://www.abysmal-plane.cjb.net) and goto the screenshots page. I might post some anyway.
-
I had installed Style XP and used the Mac OS X Professional skin with it:
Then suddenly, Style XP wasn't compatible with my Windows version ( ), and the standard skins all sucked, so I took over the colors from Mozilla and now my desktop looks like this:

m0r, you can select the text in your terminal by draging your left mouse button, then just click both mouse buttons at the same time in the window you want to paste the selected text (or right click in the target window such as Konqueror, and paste). Is that what you meant?

no, I want to take a screenshot of my actual terminal.

Well, I assume you must have cropped your plast terminal images from a full screen shot then. ksnapshot will grab a single window. Just check the box "Only grab the window containing the pointer" box.

umm... I mean the actual terminal... without a GUI... on my server.
-
Ahh, I gotcha. Yes, GPM works great for this. RedHat installed the GPM service by default. If you have a mouse attached to your server you can copy and paste your console screen very easily. First press "ALT+F2" to go to your second console and start "vim" and press "i". Then switch back to virtual terminal 1 by pressing "ALT+F1". Select the entire screen with your mouse, then press "ALT+F2" and click the middle mouse button (or right mouse button). See "man gpm" for more info.
-
does the stuff have to be in vi (or a program)??
-

It can be in any program. Or you can send it straight to a file by instead of starting vim type "cat > /tmp/screenshot.txt" in virtual terminal 2. After you paste your text in virtual terminal 2 just press "CTRL+D" and your text screen capture will reside in "/tmp/screenshot.txt".

fair comment, but some people need to scratch that itch and i think that one "huge images" thread is alright in a forum this size...
also, re: XP, then why are you putting yourself through the torture? i hope you are going to write a proper review of XP when yr month runs out btw! looking forward to it! ;)

As you can see Micro$0ft Winderz XP Has:
Better uptime:
Uses less memory:
My system has only 192mb of ram the rest of the free memory is swap... Uses about 128mb of ram. Oh look svchost.exe is using 20mb, Thats the equiv of xinetd in unix. I will see how much that uses.
Doesnt Let Microsoft take control:
This is apuling this is. Why the fuck do thay get a login on my own fucking system!!!

you will notice this is not the version of calc.exe that comes with winME. calc.exe and clock.exe (along with that MSDOS executive you see there) are all from windows 2.

-
Well, here's my linux desktop, (http://www.boomspeed.com/calumwith1l/kdedesktop.jpg)
And may i just say:
the reason that BOTH of my screenshots are a bit wonky is because i reduced them to 66% of their original size. (from 1024 to 768 pixels across) and i also compressed them to buggery while saving to jpegs, so sucks to whomever may have been about to bitch about how terrible linux looks et cetera...
-
Too many colors... not my kind of taste (http://smile.gif)
Anyway, I don't have the hard-disk space to install Lycoris Desktop/LX, so anyone that has a spare HD of at least 5 GB, living near or in the Netherlands, please contact me. (not that anyone will, but when I didn't try, it will fail anyhow)
-
I have no icons whatsoever on my desktop. I put everything in the quick launch bar.
My recycle bin is in My Computer instead of on the desktop.
(EDIT)To BOB X11 - Your lucky I decided to take my resolution down to 1024x768 before I took a screenshot. I could've made you suffer with a 1600x1200(my normal desktop resolution) picture and then you would've really been bitching. =0P(EDIT)

Hey imagine that. I have the IE icon in plain view because I use IE as my preferred browser. I have already tried all of the alternative browsers and they don't seem to have anything to offer that IE 6 doesn't already have. The difference is IE seems to do the best job rendering pages, java, flash, etc. I'll give the thumbs up to Mozilla cause it is a decent alternative browser, it just doesn't have what it takes to switch me over from IE.
P.S. With the exception of Master of Realitys' last Linux screen shot(the one using the blue visual style), the rest of the Linux screenshots aren't impressive at all. Linux looks unprofessional(looks like shit). ;P

Yeah, XP does look professional with the right visual style. Sure, Luna looks awful(like fisher price)...but it is so easy to do away with the Luna shit. Personally I don't care for Luna or Aqua(Apples' cartoonish look).

i should have known a "huge images" thread would bring zombie624783637284638274 out of hibernation. Zombie64776483, even you are a relief after the moronity of XP Loser4328930483290482 and co.
As to how my desktops look, who cares? i am not an eye candy on the desktop kind of person. I actually took a minute to quickly change my desktop so it wouldn't just look like the default. Somebody has something to worry about if they judge their system purely on it's looks.
Also, as i mentioned before (of course one needs to say something more than six times for zombie526435467324 to actually read it, if that) I squished the pix down so much that they are a bit warped (and that includes my windows one which i notice he neglected to mention)
Anyway, here's Bill Gates:

hey, here's a screenshot from my work mac. still running os9.1 i'm afraid! the picture is of the Ba', a traditional game of street football held on christmas day and new year day in the streets of kirkwall, most northerly, and smallest city in scotland, and also the nearest city to where i grew up (me being from about 20 minutes' drive away in the country).
Anyway *here's the link to the image*
Yes, i know this is the huge images thread, but boomspeed is down again, so i can't post the image directly on here yet. i'll fix it later...

boomspeed has been acting weird... very weird. I havent been able to log in at all since i signed up and uploaded my one pic. It is hosting that pic fine though (its the Bob image below).
-
they have had signing in disabled for a few days now, and for the last day or so, they have failed to even serve images or pages. You probably did not see, but for most of today your image, plus all mine, and some of gooseberry's et c were not showing up at all. It's just been back on in the last few hours. Still can't login though...
I've shifted my webpage elsewhere as you'll see from my signature link too. don't trust them.
-
No links?
And its more of the way the page renders then the load time (i have plenty of coffee). Anyway im on my brothers Windoze 2k bochs at the moment and its 1280x1024 and he has no JPG drivers installed for the Image Editior (Paint) but since we all care what each others desktops look like i may just post a BMP which will even leave the cable users crying

You can set up multiple resolutions and then change resolution on the fly by pressing CTRL+ALT+KeyPadPlus. And you can also set up the viewport settings in the XF86Config-4 so that you can have an overal resolution or say 1280x1024 but only have 1024x768 of it displayed, and it will scroll when you move the mouse to the edge. See "man XF86Config" under "Virtual" and "ViewPort".
-
i know about that. and i don't want a viewport of overall. what i would want would be for the desktop to startout in 1024x768 and then say in quake3, switch it to 1280x1024

has anyone ever seen that on a Linux site?... didnt think so.
-
how do i take a screenshot of windows????
-
You get your desktop configured the way you want for the screenshot, then you stick a copy of my Windows rescue disk (see other thread) in your floppy drive and press the reset button.
-
windows, unlike some other operating systems does not come with useful utilities such as screengrabbers (to my knowledge, actually i seem to remember some sort of thing about pressing f3 but who cares?) so go and get some third party program that will probably only be a trial demo anyway from download.com. That seems to be the norm.
-
You press one of the keys above the arrow keys /*can't remember what one*/ and it will copy the screen into the clipboard, you then paste it where ever.
-

The key you would use says 'Print screen' on it, or 'Prt Scr' it's above insert. It will then be copied to clipboard.

You can have transparent menus and such in KDE 3 I think. For os10 I use WindowShadeX and Transparent Dock. I dont really know about kde 2.4 although I dont think it has those options.

Does anyone have any screenshots of Mandrake 9 (Savage mentioned he was using it)?
BTW Sweet shots of RH8!

i have changed RH8.0 so it looks a lot better. I just posted the default blue curve.

I have to get me some of this. The following picture may cause severe siezures to certain individuals, but it's home for now. I'm D/L Mandrake 9 though. I somehow killed my my current one, and decided I might as well install Mandrake 9 since I gotta reinstall it anyway.

hey i like that second one! it is a virtual dos box, under a virtual windows session under a virtual mac OS, unser a real KDE session, is it?
cool! any idea what actual software is running to make up that montage?
-
According to the title-bare, it's Mac on Linux (http://www.maconlinux.org/) and Virtual PC (http://www.connectix.com/products/vpc5m.html)
-
I had created one similar to that that I thought was even cooler. It was KDE on a RedHat base in 1280x1024 with Windows 2000 Advanced Server running in a VMware window at 1024x768. In that Win2k I had Cygwin installed with XFree showing a Gnome desktop connected back to the Linux side through XDMCP at 800x600 which I had a VNC session back into the Win2k side. I had a few apps like Exchange Server Management Console running as well for effect.
All of that was running on my one desktop. I suppose I could fire the stuff up and take another snapshot and make it even cooler by VNCing or running a Terminal Server session back into the Win2k side. The possibilities are unlimited.
-
hmmmm... thats cool, I might try something like that sometime.
-
wasn't sure if that was the real names of the programs or just a description of their function.
I bet then that the virtual PC is running a real copy of windows, and if it is windows 98 on there, it will be running a real copy of M$DOS as well, however i bet the mac emulator is a standalone program (possibly needing a ripped mac BIOS file)

The desktop with the UT screen is Gnome under RedHat7.3 Calum.
I have KDE 3.0.1 as well as you can see from the pic (with the Twin Towers) but I mainly use Gnome. I switch to KDE when i get bored with Gnome.
The taskbars are not realy transperant. I did a trick. I put the earth wallpaper and then i right clicked on the taskbar->all proeprties.
Background tab
Backround type : Pixmap. Then i selected the same pic as in the desktop and I clicked "DONT scale image to fit.
And vuala there you have it. It looks like the taskbars ar transperant :D
I am thinking of upgrading to Gnome 2.

A higher resolution now, a terminal and a different background. Shoulda put up the process viewer w/ IE...it was using over 150 MB RAM :D

it's iceWM running mozilla 1.1 and amsn, by the way, with the xp theme for icewm and the ieskin theme for mozilla. this is the new 'guest' account i created on my computer, so we can let people use it in the flat and not worry about them getting to our files.
My aim is to make this guest account as much like windows xp as possible. i understand what calum is doing. I would do the same thing. When friends come over and use the computer for whatever (internet, music, etc..) they see that i either have redhat8 or osx running. They scream bloody murder and then proceed to talk shit. But if the gui in linux looked like windows. i honestly dont think they will ever notice. They might find something on it they like, go home to their windows machine, then throw a fit that they dont have it on their system, then call me. Thats when i show them the light (http://smile.gif)
-
that's a good approach actually, but i didn't actually think that far.
I'm proud of running linux. My 'windows' start bar will still say linux on it,
'internet explorer' will still say 'mozilla' (although i now have an IE
icon that i will be using), and i'll still have all the emacs, kppp, xmms
and so on running, it's just funny to me to think that windows is really just
its GUI, and i can emulate that just with some free skins and stuff off
the internet! i'll post another screenshot soon when it really looks like xp...

That is a nicely done Winamp skin...but that skin isn't going to fool a WMP user into thinking it is WMP that he/she is using.
The skin is nicely done, but the player doesn't look like WMP.

Doh, I thought the idea was to make someone using the XP look alike system think he/she is actually using XP(including the MS apps that come with XP). I was pointing out that the skin would not fool anyone...though it may fool a winamp user who uses that Media Player skin into thinking that XMMS w/that skin is Winamp(I doubt it though).

That Linux desktop wouldn't fool anyone into thinking they are using Windows XP because,
1.The ugly, clunky looking clock.
2.Every icon on the wannabe taskbar has an ugly little box outline around it(unlike XP which has a smooth looking taskbar with smooth icon backgrounds that blend seamlessly into the taskbar).
3. The window scroll bars aren't consistant to the visual style.

What do you think the small mode is for(pictured in the top-righthand corner of the screenshot I posted last)? The large mode is really only useful for videos. The mini WMP is actually smaller than Winap. If desktop space is a concern, you can minimize WMP to the taskbar and still have access to your player controls(unlike winamp unless you get the taskbar plugin)..and the taskbar player is capable of displaying a little video window next to/on top of the taskbar(depending on where the bar is located) so you can watch your video and do other things(the video window stays on top of other windows). Oh yeah, that song name tag in my pic goes away after about a second, so you can't say the name tag window gets in the way. ;P

true, and icewm is a really small lightweight desktop environment, plus i haven't found all the ways it can be customised yet.
rather than trying to fool somebody i think it is fun to just use as much stuff as possible that looks a bit like windows. For instance, icewm also has a windows 95 theme and a windows 3.1 theme, but i don't like the 95 theme so much as it says 'linux' instead of 'start' on the start button, and i suppose i could change it but i will need to find out how.
as for the winamp skin, the msn window, the IE skin and so on, you are correct of course, the IE skin is supposed to look like the IE from win2000, as the author has not finished his XP version yet, AMSN is just supposed to try and look like whatever the newest version of messenger is, also, the XP theme for icewm seems to be static colours, so i would need to figure out how to make my own theme if i want to change the colours in 'XP'. Also those icons are hacked, unfortunately, i got the IE icon off somebody's website and unfortunately i don't like the implementation of it as it has white spots around it, plus it is too close to the blue on the toolbar, how is that resolved on a real XP toolbar? The winamp/xmms skin, i think i will install on there too, but again, it doesn't go all out fanatically to look like WMP.
I'm not too bothered about how 100% accurate it all is, i just want it to look a bit windowsy, as it might provoke a double take or two... there's no way i would really want to convince somebody i was running windows when i wasn't when it comes down to it.
Also, (for the rest) GNOME 2 seems incompatible with icewm, i booted into GNOME and did 'killall -9 metacity; icewm;' and it worked, however it seems to have some real toolbar issues.
I might just go with icewm's MacOS theme and have done with it! that still leaves me with my desktop icons problem though...
edit - by the way, go and look on the first page or two of this thread, pretty bad, most of the images are down! any chance they could some of them come back? i liked them! :D

just my latest attempt at faking the xp look, and this time the desktop icons work, because it's kde, although that means less customisation available on the taskbar.
also:
-
I'm curious. Why do you want to fake the XP look?
-
my computer has 3 accounts on it. (four if you include root) One for me, one for my girlfriend and one guest account. in the guest account, i'd like the taskbar and desktop to function as much like windows (and i have been aiming for XP) as possible, windows 2000 would be good as well, but it's not so conspicuous a look as xp.
basically, i want to make it seem like it's xp to someone sitting down at it, and it's only when their defences are down that they realise it's... NOT!
most people don't even know there is such a thing as an alternative to windows, so i would welcome the chance to make a talking point of it.

The most shameless screenshots on the planet (my personal collection):
http://www.akgames.net:8000/Downloads/Files/Personal/Back.htm (http://www.akgames.net:8000/Downloads/Files/Personal/Back.htm)
The images are NOT thumbnails, they are full size, so:
Do not visit this page if you don't have a decently fast (Cable, DSL, T1) connection.
I hope you have a lot of RAM and a big swap partition! 100+ MBs of images.
-
Wow, pretty cool images there! But you really should thumbnail them, it used up about all the memory my laptop had to display the page. (http://smile.gif)
-
I will...when (if) I have the time.
Happy 4500 post!

You could just remove the index.html (or rename it to something else) so it will show a directory listing in which you can click on individual pictures one at a time.

Well Sir, I accept your challenge.
That's 69 programs in the taksbar, 9 in the system tray, and a whole load or dialog boxes and whatnot behind there somehere. I got a bit bored and decided to just stop after looking for what programs I have and started doubling some up and what not. It's still an assload either way. Lotsa real resource hogs too might I add. Photoshop, a media player in the middle of a Flying Circus episode. Coupla media players actually.

Ok, first of all 6 of the ones in the taskbar are IE, just cause you have 6 windows open its still only one app. Another 5 or so are just explorer, I didn't count the finder in mine [although there was about ten finder windows open] so I dont count explorer on yours. And then there is fact that windows just looks like shit...
-
sad but true, so that brings us down to about 45? 40? also, i noticed a lot of the ones on top in the windows picture are just system dialog boxes while the ones on the mac are real applications.
-
Under OSX on my 233Mhz iMac, I rutinely have 10-15 programms open. And I have never had a system page out or a crash. but then that little bastard is loaded with RAM :D
-
Your petty "Your windows looks like shit" has no real bearing, and I don't even have close to 80 different programs on this thing. I'd have a peek at trc3's running programs down there, but you can't see shit.

Which app? Gaim? MPlayer? Either way it took me about 5 seconds each:
# apt-get install mplayer
# apt-get install gaim
[ January 14, 2003: Message edited by: void main ]
-
Yeah. Mplayer. apt-get Too easy.
-
it is pretty easy actually.
i don't know how it took you so long...
-
Well if you did it from source you did a good job. I would consider MPlayer to be one of the more difficult apps to get installed from source because of all the prereqs and multitude of configuration options.
Actually MEncoder (part of the MPlayer project) was my first experience with it. I needed to create a movie in several different formats from a series of JPGs that were taken a day apart over a couple of years. I would have to say that getting it working the first time was a bitch.
Fortunately someone has taken the time to build packages for the distros with the most common options. And also fortunately most apps aren't quite that difficult. Oops, guess I am off topic, didn't include a picture...
-
Well. My first compile I didn't do gui support. My second compile worked fine, but took me a bit to get the permissions right so to let me use my skins. And in between was a whole lot of forum searching to find out just how the hell to install it in the first place.
Um.. here's a picture. Just to kepp this on track.

nice.
is that the default skin for safari then? looks tabbable, must be the new one.
is it skinnable too?
-
Yeah, the tabs are very nice but what I like the most is the Bookmarks function. If you'll look at the bar above the browser window you'll see that all of my sites are just a click away. It's great. I've gone from hating Safari to not being able to use anything else.
As for skins, there aren't any choices included with the browser like with Mozilla (that I can see, anyway) but I'm sure you can download different skins somewhere.
-
hmm, of course all that has been standard in galeon for quite a while, including six or so skins coming with the browser, plus you can have search boxes in your bookmarks in galeon. anyway, this is for screenshots, and if i posted one of galeon, it would fail dismally to provide the eyecandy that we see there.

Cool! I like it.
I especially like the little boba fet dude ontop of the power supply. What happens if you bump the case and he falls over though? It would be annoying to pick him up all the time.
Or do you have him glued down?

I really like the red inside... Did it come like that, or did you apply the paint yourself? If it was a DIY project, then, you did a very good job.
Bravo!
-
Excellent case fett! If you applied the paint and everything yourself, then you're really talented! Bravo, from me as well! Excellent job! ;)
-
Did it myself. The Lil Fett falls over a bit often, but I'll probably glue him down sometime. And then, after I can find Carkoon Fett (http://cargobay.starwars.com/webapps/cargobay/item-detail/9109/7582), I plan to put him on one of the HD racks, and probably put LED's in the flames.
The paintjob took forever, but it has a mirror finish., and there's other features that you can't quite see in that pic. 3 UV lights, UV sensative cable sleeving (http://cargobay.starwars.com/webapps/cargobay/item-detail/9109/7582), a spotlight on Fett, and switches mounted on a PCI cover that let's me turn the lights and fans on and off, and also let's me run the fans on 12V or 7V (to quiet them)

Why does your PC run so hot? Those fans must be incredibly loud.
I was thinkin about modding up my PC after seeing your case. Do you usually want so many fans? I pnly have a CPU and exaust fan on my PC, and it does fine. Not too loud either.
What's the deal with the fans :D

Case mod points, I belive. (http://smile.gif)
Also, if you OC a compuper you'll need to provide it with more cooling.
-
I don't particularly need them. Only 1 intake and 2 exaust and the HD coolers. But it's just an addictive sorta thing, to get it as cool as possible. Also, I gotta use the spiffy fan holders that come with the case. Case esthetics too. And chrome fingergaurds.
-
I don't know about the fans, but I love the case work fett! ;)

That Jackrabbit game looks like shit(mainly because the colors look terrible).
I bet 64-Tap Anisiotropic filtering ang 4X 9-Tap(4XS) Antialasing would do the game some justice. What color mode is that game being run in anyways? 8-Bit(256 colors)?
Despite how it looks, the game may be fun. Nobody wants to publish the game because Epic actually lost money on Jazz Jackrabbit 2(which is bad because that is the only game Epic has ever lost money on). That came from the URL below.
http://www.jazz2online.com/~j3f/ (http://www.jazz2online.com/~j3f/)
If they can't find a publisher to sell the game why don't they just release it as a freeware game available for download? They may not make no money that way(they aren't making any money off of the game anyways) but at least there will be people playing the game(it should please the creator of the game knowing that there are actually people who like and play his creation).
Or why don't they make it shareware? They could let people download a playable demo and if the gamer wants the full version of the game he/she could mail the $$$ for the full version of the game to the game creator and the creator could send the gamer the full version of the game on a home burnt CD(hopefully with a neat looking label made by a label maker). Then the creator wouldn't need a publisher.

Hmmm, That is why the textures don't look very good. 2x anisotropic filtering = bilinear(no tap). It should be turned up to at least 4x(16-tap). 6x(32-tap) would make it look even better(6x is not accessable through NVidia drivers, you need a tweak program to access it). 8x(64-Tap) is the best of course but it really murders game performance. 32-Tap and 64-Tap can only be used on a GeForce 3 or better(except the GeForce 4 MX which is based on the GeForce 2 technology). A GeForce 2 can do 16-tap and it doesn't really hurt the performance(it actually helps performance and looks better). Bilinear filtering is slow and ugly. If you have a GeForce 3 or better I really recommend 32-tap filtering.
-

Another FPS that I like, 007 Nightfire. EA Games did a beautiful job with the pixel shaders(the water is using pixel shaders). I don't think they used Advanced Pixel Shaders(or I haven't made it to a level using them). It is a DX 8.1 game, I wish they would re-make it for DX9. The JPEG compression of the pic doesn't do the image quality of the game any justice(It looks alot better in game).

Here is one more game screenie. This one is Morrowind. It is another DX 8.1 game. This one shows what DirectX can really do. This one uses Pixel Shader, Vertex Shaders, Advanced Pixel Shaders and Enviromental Bump Mapping. This screenie doesn't get all of those into one(this screenie only has EVB and Pixel Shader graphics)...but god it is realistic looking and it is beautiful! I can't wait until some DX9 games are released. :D

Yep, Morrowing was the major catalyst for me getting a PC :D
hehehehe... nah not realy, but it was a great little bonus.
I love that game, hell a fun.
But it's non-linearity makes it get boring and samy tword the end.

Just as you have yet to play the multiplayer, I have yet to play the single player. The team based action is truly addictive and I never tire of the objective based multiplayer combat. If you ever decide to play multiplayer, know that I am usually on ECGNetwork 24/7 beach, or Happy Penguin Classic the depot. I am known as DeadManWalking. It took me quite a while to get wolfenstein working correctly in linux, especially since you have to download the updates, and manually update punkbuster. Also I have yet to get the mousewheel to change weapons.

I tried RTCW in MP today. It is nothing like Quake III or UT. It actually takes good strategy to win matches...that and playing on teams is way different than Deathmatch. I enjoyed it. It doesn't get boring so quick(DM gets old). When I first started I treated it like DM and I blew all of my teammates away until they all ganged up on me and blew my head off. LoL
OpenGL does wonders for Doom, the game that really started the FPS craze. Wolf3D was the first...but it was so flat and plain. I know that I never once jumped out of my socks throughout the entire Wolf3D game. It simply didn't have any terrifying, feeling of lonliness factors to it. Doom really made you feel like you were in a lonely, terrifying 3D environment back in the day. Honestly it feels weird to play it after all these years of playing modern FPS's. The control system for Doom is so different(even though the GL engine being used adds mouselook/mouse aim to the game).

DirectX may not be shit as a gaming API, but the fact remains that it is stuck to Windows, making it difficult to port games using DirectX to other platforms (including consoles), and has many security holes (like this one (http://www.newsfactor.com/perl/story/21969.html), for instance.

I have nothing against directX, in fact it was kind of a lie when I said dont expect directX screenshots from me because Im running WineX which emulates DirectX 8.1 to play windows games, such as Sim City 4 and Warcraft 3 if you look at the icons on my desktop. I just hope that a more open gaming API emerges after everything to bring simplified porting of games to Windows, Macs, and Linux.

I don't understand. What's wrong with it? It's simply saying that the first device does not support DMA.

But it does support it, that's the problem. Suddenly it just stopped working one day and even a bunch of differently configured re-installs havent helped so far.
-
Or maybe DMA is disabled for the Primary IDE channels at BIOS level. Go to your BIOS and poke around to see if that is the case.
It would also be wise to install the latest version of the Intel Chipset Software Installation utility(motherboard chipset drivers) seeing that your machine uses an Intel chipset.
Intel Chipset Software Installation utility v5.x (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=816)
After you install the chipset drivers and reboot, install the Intel Application Accelerator(IDE drivers for Intel chipsets). I can already tell by looking at the listing name for your IDE drivers that you are using the default Win2K drivers. The Primary IDE channels should still be functioning in DMA mode though. I really think that your problem is at BIOS level. The updated drivers won't hurt anything though.
Intel Application Accelerator v2.3 (http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=663)
You may even want to consider updating/flashing the latest BIOS for your motherboard.

Kitten Season? Kind of like hunting season. You go outside with a large net and try to catch wild kittens?!?

No anti-aliasing fonts: ugly.
-
ClearType is also ugly, since it bleeds color out of text. So, it's hard to say. ;)
-
Well, it doesn't bleed the color out... it... blends it.
It's wierd. I like it better than un AA'd fonts, as the jaggies look like ass... and anything is better than the shitty Windows Plus! style classic AA which only got stuff that was 12pts or larger.
If only they could figure out how to make it AA bitmapped fonts. Hell, Photoshop and The Gimp can do it! All you'd lose is hinting. If they offered a grayscale AA algorithm in ClearType, one without subpixel rendering, it'd be better for non-LCD displays.
-

All you need is a crowbar and yourself.
Remember to whack ANYONE that looks like a zombie, sounds like a zombie, or portrays any zombie-like characteristics (headcrabs, insatiable taste for human flesh, walking upright...)
Remember that Barneys are your friends, but that you can whack them if they step out of line, too.
...and remember, guys in camo and black jumpsuits are your enemies. Unless, of course, you're playing Op:For 3, in which case you only have to watch out for assassins.

If I install Ubuntu, will I have to backup all my files to keep them after Ubuntu installs?
-
Dude...Windows 98? :o
Not even Windows people should be using that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using Windows 98 (other than the fact that it's Windows).
We use it in school, and Windows XP isn't much better in my experience.
It works, and you don't needa give it half a gig of ram for a half decent experience.
-
Yeah, I know... But my dad's too lazy to buy a new OS. I think I'll look Ubuntu over and show it to him.

I agree with WMD, Windows XP doesn't BSOD every hour Windows 98 did, and it's more secure since yo can set up limited user accounts.

Actually, the G3 is noticably faster than the iMac. The BIGGEST difference is the 7200RPM ATA66 hard drive, compared with the 4500RPM ATA33 drive in the iMac. Add to that the PPC750 in the Blue G3 has 512K cache while the 750cxe in the iMac has 128K. The Blue G3 is in nearly every way "better". The most important thing for me though is... I have the option of dropping in a G4, or, as you say, a much nicer video card, as well as other peripherals... things I couldn't even consider with the iMac.
Also, I can use any VGA display I want, including my 21" CTX. With the iMac I'm limited to 1024x768 at 75hz no matter what.
-
so what are you waiting for, drop in a g4
-
That's a great idea, man.
Want me to PM my Paypal address so you can send me the money to buy it?
Edit: The lightning bolt is for my APC UPS. OS X automatically detects and configures it.

Transparant text sucks.

Couldn't agree more, it burns more cycles to render, is harder to read and looks crap too.

Looking great, I'm missing Linux, next time I re-install OSes on my hard disc I'm gonna do a dual-boot again. ;)
-
I'm new here so I might as well post what I'm about... I'm all about GNU/Linux so here's my gnome desktop. I'm not a big DE guy, I like K, Flux, E16.7, Gnome AND XFCE, I think they're all great but I tend to stick to my gnome for the moment mainly because of Nautilus and Epiphany... Nautilus is stable as hell and Epiphany is like having Firefox fully configured and themed. I'm using customized Icon theme in the pic of NuoveXT, Scutum controls and SmoothDark Tango Windec metacity. The background image is my creation... :D w00t
(http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/6276/screenshot9zv.th.png) (http://img63.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screenshot9zv.png)

-
cool ... that's a nice theme
-
Yeah I KNOW! But is it GOOD?!

My new Powerbook.
By the way, the background is a screensaver.
-
A have a friend who recently returned one of those 15" 1440x960 Powerbooks due to the screen problem. Does yours have it?
-
Nice computer Laukev, welcome to the club!
Here's mine, yeah it's the stock but I really don't care, I like it.

No problems here, it works fine. And I've had it since Christmas.
What's the problem BTW?
Nice computer Laukev, welcome to the club!
Yup, I've been wanting a Mac for like 5 years now. I finally got it!
-
So the screensaver actually works on the desktop ... I mean the fish swim while you work on the desktop ?
-
Yup. There's an app that does this, it's called Backlight. The screensaver is Marine Aquarium.
If anyone's interested, you can get them here:

Every other horizontal line is ~5% darker. This creates a sort of interlacing effect. Apple hasn't made the cause known; it could be an incorrectly calculated refresh rate, or a bad panel design. (The Powerbook G4 uses a rare 3:2 aspect ratio of which few panels exist.)
-
Nope, haven't had any such problem. And I've tried many resolutions.

Wow, I bet that eats memory!
-
Actually, it runs quite well, even with lots of apps open. Now, I wouldn't do it while scanning with Photoshop or playing Doom 3, but I turn it on occasionally when I want to impress people or when I want to hear the bubbles and see fish moving while typing.
-
Sell the laptop and get a fish tank ;)
-
Or put a fish tank right next to laptop ... I really hate fish as pets cuz they always fucking die within 2 days of buying them ... except for Siamese fighting fish (Betta) (http://freshaquarium.about.com/library/graphics/fw4071.jpg) ... they have lungs, live in swamps, and thus don't need special water conditions ... they live up to 2 years before they die of old age :D ... and they look cool too

My computer was turning into a big mess, and I was formatting the partitions, so I decided to install Solaris 10. Unlike my attempts with previous versions, I finally got the internet to work with this one.
JDS is pretty:
But for some sick reason, I like the CDE desktop too.
I liked the old purple background better than the current default one though, so I decided to cut the pattern out of a screenshot taken from Google image. I measured and cut the mosaic to be exactly like the original.
BTW, I have a huge screen resolution.

Very cool... and well here is my W2K when I have to use it for Civ4 or Fallout, Arcanum, Sim City 4 etc etc

-
It's gkrellm (http://freshmeat.net/projects/gkrellm/) ... with copland skin (http://www.muhri.net/gkrellm/). It's actually quite useful.
-
What's with the .gif?
Is it because of the size restriction or something?
You're not running this thing in 8-bit 256 volour mode are you?
-
Size restriction ... :( ... it used to be png, but too big. Ok, here's a jpg it's smaller and better quality.

I like that sidebar, the gkrellm, so I installed it and the skin. Is there a way to make it act like a panel? So that windows maximize by it, not over or under it. That would be awesome.
-
Yeah right-click on it > Configuration > Properties > check Set Window type to dock or panel, ok, then restart gkrellm.
(If you use fluxbox it doesn't handle docks as well, so I would add it to the slit instead with "gkrellm -w &" (no quotes) in the startup script)
-
Awesome, thanks. Well here's my screenshot though I had already uploaded it.

Etement... how did you get the clock and volume control transparent?... I can only get the gnome-panel ever transparent
-
Ok, here's one of fluxbox with transparency ... (if I use a different terminal I could make it transparent too, but I think readability is more imortant there ... a lot of things depend on not making a typo)
P.S. I never knew GNOME could be transparent

any transparancy featurs in 98 ?
-
Etement... how did you get the clock and volume control transparent?... I can only get the gnome-panel ever transparent
using gnome 2.12, I just right clicked went to solid background and lowered the transparency, if you'll have something else on the top it most likely won't be transparent; that's the reason I have a lot of things on the bottom.

lol. I always have a stuff partition that I share between distros (right now I've got Ubuntu and Foresight installed), where I store all my music, programming stuff, source packages, "crap"... and vidoes, and other stuff. Ofcourse there's no porn in the videos folder!
It would actually be cool if I could make the folder icon size proportional to its size on disk, but I just made it huge myself (in GNOME on the desktop you can right-click and stretch an icon) just to make it clear to Windoids that this is not Windows (it's better than Windows), and plus it looks alot cooler than 2 equally small icons (which looks like shit - I'd just remove the icons altogether)..
My stuff partition is 100 GB and usually it's full but I formatted it a few days ago, after backing it up..

I see ... well I personally don't like icons too much, they're only useful with many folders, and only a few that you use often (so you can easily differentiate by look).

I'm setting up a home file server so I won't really need a stuff partition anymore on the local drives.

What makes you say that? The same effect can be achieved in XP with "Classic" settings, so it's hard to tell from that screen. I'm not sure that "Control Panel" has a "display on desktop" option though, so that could be it.
Having said that, and seeing D-Tools and "Games" (not to mention the lambda wallpaper), I'm guessing he's a gamer. I hope he at least dual-boots and has looked into Wine / Cedega, if only in passing. :)

Yeah I was reduced to saving shit on the desktop, thanks for that, Firefox.

I've done that for about the 10th time in a few months now.. I get a new profile for a new installation of a different version of Firefox, and just can't be arsed at times to put the 2mins into messing with the settings.

I like the show :D
Reefer Madness... Heh, I picked that randomly up from a BitTorrent index when I was looking for sample (and legal) .torrent files :D I guess I should download and watch it now.. It looks interesting!

I've finally got Windows to run at 1024x768 at 256 colours under DOSEmu.
The Trident driver suggested on the DOSEmu site didn't work so I downloaded the generic SVGA driver and patched it (using a special utility) to give VESA support. It works a charm and is more than good enough for any Windows 3.1 application. Now all I need is to get it working 16-bit colour but I think that's probably too much to ask.

Wanted to try it, wanted to see if it lived up to the hype, or how much people said it sucked. Its a bit of both, nothing jaw dropping, but most of the negative parts can be turned off with 4 or less clicks.

Still what were they thinking...

5.9 is the highest score you can achieve
My CPU got 5.2
Gfx card got 5.9
Gaming GFX got 5.7
and my HD got 5.6
My ram got 4.5, because its slow DDR1-3200, if it was say DDR2, it would be higher. Your score is the lowest sub score you get.

Yes. UT kicks ass, it's fast and customizable, and I dig the engine (superior to Quake III Arena at the time).
I've installed other games too, but they're in the PlayOnLinux menu.

We should find some server to play on together( if my connection is not too laggy)...
I'm no pro though, UT is more like a hobby to me and human players own me far too much, AI is fine though even on "insane"

The word freeware has been used for more than 20 years to describe proprietary software which is distributed at no charge. So I feel comfortable using it to describe the piece of software in question.

I'll post a pic soon. Right now my Macbook Pro is in for repair because my cousin sat on it, crushing the screen. I should've told you this, but well, I've been seeing other forums.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 was made in the Netherlands, so it has a very strong fanbase here.
There are still lots of servers multiplayer (but don't go to those TSF Hotel servers, they suck).

Yeah, so I started using Chrome today. Very nice looking browser, that's for sure. Ironically, it doesn't work with my Google job interface at all. I wish Firefox was this quick to open/close. Something that looks like Chrome, with my favorite extensions from Firefox, which is as well integrated as Safari, would be ideal. Back when there were just 2 browsers, it was somehow acceptable that all of them sucked. But now that there is real competition in the browser market, there's no excuse for not having a perfect experience.
Then again, it's my own fault, I guess, for not having the time to kludge together my own browser. ::)
-
Will be interesting to see how Firefox 3.6 compares to Chrome. Its supposed to be faster then the current 3.5
-
I hope they sort it, Firefox has similar memory usage to Internet Explorer and over twice as much memory as Opera according to my non-scientific test.
I loaded Firefox, MS IE and Opera, each with stop-microsoft.org and maximised all the windows, Opera seems to cut its memory usage to 7MB when minimised which won't be fair..
Firefox has Adblock and Clippings extensions installed. I'd expect the memory usage to be a bit less without them but I still consider the test to be fair, as far as I'm concerned they're required to give Firefox the functionality I miss from Opera.
EDIT:
I've just tested Chrome, it uses 24,584K; not as light as Opera but not as bloated as Firefox or IE.
-
STOP TALKING ABOUT MEMORY NUMBERS. FIREFOX MODIFIES ITS SETTINGS THAT CONTROL MEMORY USAGE AND PERFORMANCE ACCORDING TO THE POWER OF THE SYSTEM.
-
STOP TALKING ABOUT MEMORY NUMBERS. FIREFOX MODIFIES ITS SETTINGS THAT CONTROL MEMORY USAGE AND PERFORMANCE ACCORDING TO THE POWER OF THE SYSTEM.
There's no need to shout about it.
Calm the fuck down, it's a browser for fuck sake, there's no need to get emotional, it's not like I've insulted you or a member of your family.
Would you have said that if I were comparing Microsoft Internet Explorer to Firefox?
Probably not, you probably would have entered into some rant about Firfox pawning IE.
So when IE uses more memory than Firefox it's because IE is bloatware, but when Firefox is compared with another browser, which uses memory more efficiently, it's "adjusting the memory usage and performance according to the system"? Sounds like double standards to me. ::)
Yes, Opera Chrome do that too, they just seem to adjust memory and performance more efficiently than Firefox. There's no other explanation for being able to outperform Firefox on a system with the same hardware.
-
STOP TALKING ABOUT MEMORY NUMBERS. FIREFOX MODIFIES ITS SETTINGS THAT CONTROL MEMORY USAGE AND PERFORMANCE ACCORDING TO THE POWER OF THE SYSTEM.

I didnt shout.
But I used caps to reinforce my point since I made the same point about years ago to you specifically.

Would you have said that if I were comparing Microsoft Internet Explorer to Firefox?
I pointed out a simple fact that I understand about Firefox that makes your comparisons involving numbers pretty much useless. In fact, those comparisons are almost always useless. If you have 1.5 gig of ram do you really care if your web browser is using 200mb?
I've 1 gig ram and I use an eee pc with Firefox on ubuntu 9.10 and I cant fault firefoxes performance (19 tabs open atm, rarely stop firefox except when I shut down/battery is low).
-
I didnt shout.
Yes you did. You should've been using the Internet for long enough to know that using block capitals on the Internet is considered to be shouting.
But I used caps to reinforce my point since I made the same point about years ago to you specifically.
That's what bold typeface is for.

I did admit that it is not a scientific test. It will vary depending on the hardware.

Perhaps your battery will last a bit longer if you used a lighter weight browser. ;D
I have a fairly old machine with 512MB which doesn't all get used half of the time but Firefox does seem to get slower, the longer it's loaded.
I've just tried Safari out, it seems quite good.
I don't know how it compares to the other browsers yet. So far, I like the way both the height and width of the text box on forums can be changed so it's more like typing in a word processor. It doesn't have Adblock but Googleing has reveled a few options.
EDIT:
I've just had a play with Epiphany, it's certainly lightweight, fast and has an Adblock extension. On the downside it's not so user friendly, opening a new tab takes a couple of clicks, and it only zooms text, not images. It reminds me of Firefox pre-3 and certainly has quite a way to go before it's good enough for me.
I suppose I'll just have to keep looking for a better browser for Linux unless Firefox 3.6 is really good.

I was browsing the Internet with Opera in Windows XP when a huge black line appeared on the screen. I first I thought my monitor was fucked, but then I realised the mouse cursor was above the black line. I then thought it was a rendering error in Opera so I minimised it but the line was stayed there, overlying the desktop.
I took as screenshot and the line appeared in it which implies it's the graphics card. I tried changed the screen mode to 4-bit 16 colour 640x480 and back again and the line just moved to the left hand side of the screen.
What's weird is I opened up a command line, switched to full screen, loaded MS-DOS editor and the line vanished!
I took the attached screenshot before I played around with changing the mode. The screen mode was 32-bit but I reduced the PNG is 8-bit to make it small enough to attach. I know I could've used JPG but I think it would've looked worse.
Note I'm not asking for Windows help here.
I'll try rebooting, if that doesn't work, I'll reinstall the graphics driver.
EDIT:
The problem was fixed by logging off and logging back on again. The joys of Windows ay. ::)
-
That has happened to me on the Mac as well. Except that usually the line is specific to a certain window, and closing that window causes the line to disappear. I figure it's just the screen drawing routine having a slight malfunction. Flushing the infected screen from memory forces it to be redrawn from scratch, and the problem disappears. The circumstances that can trigger a redraw on the Mac are obviously different in Windows, which is why you get them in screen space instead of window space, and why you have to log out to clear the error. Even if I get one in the Finder, I can relaunch the finder to clear it.
-
I would've thought changing the mode would have cleared the graphics buffer but obviously not.
Have you had the problem on other Macs or is it specific to that machine?
This is the first time this has happened to me on Windows or X11.
The only time this kind of thing has happened to me is with old DOS software or when I've in stalled a bad driver, which normally makes a total mess of the display.
-
Only on this computer.
I've also seen horizontal lines as proof of LCD failure, but those are even visible during boot.
-
Showing off my Firefox Persona. It would probably look better with a blue or white background, but whatever. Look at the browser, look at the browser.

My shitty PC: 1.8GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, PC2100 motherboard, ATI Rage fury video with 32MB RAM.
It has a CRT screen which can do 1280x1024 but it can only 60Hz at that resolution which is unbearable so I keep it at 1152x864 because it can do 75Hz which is flicker free.
-
Wow, I have better computers sitting in a pile ready to be thrown out. Also, I've never noticed the 60hz flicker. Everyone else does.

Don't throw them away give them to charity so some child in the 3rd world can watch as much porn as they can.
My old computer still serves me well. It's fine for the Internet and word processing. There's still plenty of disk space left on the old crappy hard drive and I rarely use all the RAM.
-
I don't see that donation bin sitting around. I've donated old computers before to a melbourne charity that puts debian on them (if they are super old) or ubuntu and puts them homeless shelters and such with internet access. Not the worst way to write a resume when one has little else left I imagine.

In Australia we all go through so many computers it seems recycling is entirely about keeping them away from landfills. I think this has a lot to do that we are the kings of the world in terms of our trade position with a dollar that kicks ass relatively, since we are the only G20 nation that cares enough about its currency to raise rates. As far as keeping these systems out of landfills goes, I am doing exactly that. Because when I refined that search for Australia, I really couldn't find much other than recyclers. The absence of charity doesn't surprise me, because usually when I meet someone without a computer and I have seven spare ones they get given an old one pretty quickly. This is the Australian way. I imagine the recycler probably tries to hock the cables and such, but when its obselete it really is, and they probably just dump them in landfills anyway.
I don't see a big movement to send them to Africa or South America coming either. No boats tend to go in that direction, all the boats departing Australia are usually headed for Europe and China carrying coal. Which we use to buy too many damn computers.
The irony is that despite having the developed worlds worst Internet connection speeds, we probably have more processing power per head than anyone. Actually, my dad got his computer from free from work because they were going to throw it in the bin over a year ago and it has a dual core 3.2ghz Intel processor and 4 gigabytes of ram.
-
in your opinion is that good news or bad news, or neither?
I have wondered about this, we've reached the point now where there's going to be a huge ton of old but still functional computers lying around in every "West" country that nobody wants or needs to use. What's the solution i wonder? Melt them down for their constituent parts? Can you imagine a day when you buy recycled solder, and you can buy video cards made from 100% recycled materials...
btw, about Australia's recycling policy, what sort of situation is it at the moment? Ten years ago when i was there, there was an impressive amount of recycling going on amongst the general public (compared with in the UK at that time anyway), and yet i had heard that much (all?) of the stuff people had put in for recycling was just being stored because Australia didn't have facilities to recycle many of the materials. Do you happen to know if this is still the case, or if it ever was the case (i'm not sure where i even heard this, so it might not even be true).

Kintaro,
I wouldn't mind your dad's PC, it's much better than mine.
I don't see the point in having a really fast computer, my current main machine is a 2GHz single core AMD 64 processor, PC3200 1GB RAM, Sapphire Radeon X300SE graphics carge with 256MB RAM which I got for free from my brother. I'm happy with it and will probably not upgrade for a few years and when I do it'll be for free, the only thing I'd probably pay for is a solid state HD. The older machine described in my previous post was my main machine until the end of last year.
I don't play games or anything so buying a faster PC won't bring me any real benefits, a lot of the extra power will be sucked up by the latest version of Windows, so any PC is fine as long as it can cope with Google's latest 3D mapping web apps. I still don't even use the full power of my current PC - half of that 1GB RAM hardly ever gets used!

I am really not sure, but I've heard the same thing as you somewhere. I know that wherever there is the profit motive there is recycling. My family was in the automotive recycling business for years and that tended to sit in a balance of selling the parts of cars or having them melted down for scrap metal. When the price of steel shot up, we crushed a lot more cars. Computers don't really contain much of anything of value so they just sit around. Yet there is a bit of culture of recycling and people tend to like taking part.
I made a joke at the supermarket the other day, when I forgot to bring my reusable grocery bags that they can probably make 10,000 disposable bags with the same amount of energy as weaved cotton reusuable one. When it comes to climate change I think when ETS becomes more widespread recycling could be hit in the crossfire as wasteful of energy.
I hope my kids are digging up landfills in 2050 and using nanite replicators or whatever to turn them back into useful stuff.
As for motherboards and parts there are a lot of computer recycling businesses which come in handy in repairing old computers and upgrading them but as they become obselete so does the demand for the parts.

Windows 7 seems a bit nicer than Vista on hardware requirements. Without games I've noticed many people use overpowered computers for very little.

this is nice to hear, in the UK it's still the mainstream attitude that recycling is for tree hugging alfalfa eaters, and that we'll only do it w the government forces us to (the main thing that seems to be fashionable at the moment is to treat recycling bins as normal bins, no idea what that's about, but it's the height of ignorance imho)
I hope my kids are digging up landfills in 2050 and using nanite replicators or whatever to turn them back into useful stuff.
i totally agree. :-)

A simple desktop, the way I like it. Contains the bestest Gnome theme ever. Try finding shiki-colors.

Truth. I still use a 450MHz desktop and a 180MHz portable on daily bases.
Here's the screen from that 450.

LOL that's old school
I actually grabbed that page once and converted it to XHTML+CSS. That was before I realized that a forum portal was a much better idea.
