Title: so quiet
Post by: Stryker on 24 January 2003, 05:26
Has anyone else noticed how quiet it's been here for the last few days? We went from a lot of good threads, to a bunch of bad ones, to practically none. where are we headed next? or maybe it's all just coincidence, but i'm just wonedering what you guys think.

I just think several of us are a little tired of the garbage lately.. When you have threads full of shit, no one is going to read or respond...

I agree, but i'm still a bit confused about the absense of pretty much any posts. I requested to be a moderator because of all these crap threads. calum said he wouldn't be around enough to put in his full part. X11 seemed to have some issues, hopefully only temporary. I haven't seen any bad posts recently either. not in about 2 days. I guess i'm just wondering who is still showing up and who decided to leave. And of course I can't sit here complaining to myself about the lack of posts if I dont do one myself. The only people i've heard really anything from is void main, webmaster, the muffin man, the quirk, MoR, and refalm. sounds like a big list but there are over 2000 other people signed up. i would expect a little more traffic... maybe microsoft is slowly getting all of us.

Well lets hope the converse of that isn't true, because we all know there is something wrong with microsoft... so they just might.

I think it's time we got some new moderators. Like Stryker said, Calum is stressed because he's the only mod actually doing a good job and X11 is nuts. I requested to be a mod too, but no reply. Guess Webmaster doesn't care what happens to this place.

I would suggest IMing him, but I'm not so sure if he feels comfortable with people giving out his s/n. i can ask him if you want (unless of course he reads this), or email him but i had problems with it actually sending. although there isn't too many places open right now. if anything opens up in the *nix section though i'd like a spot in line.

I don't believe it's M$ that's causing it. I just think news in general has slowed. The Register doesn't have nearly the articles worth posting that they used to have (maybe M$ is paying them off). And I started my own Linux forum so I would rather try and help with Linux questions there so you don't get the smart ass comments from the Windoids. I carry a heavy delete button.

And I can't stand everything turning into a political discussion on this board so I have pretty much piped down lately. I still browse the latest threads but not as deeply as I used to.

Its because VoidMain has taken the Linux people to his (better) forum. Calum has stole all the philosophy people. MoR stole the bobs. Gleb stole the 15 year olds. So its now a Ghetto for apple people. Starting to seem that way anyway.

There is no doubt things have slowed down, and too many of the threads are deteriorating into discussions not based on the threads in question.

This is a forum about getting away from using a company that has destroyed customer choice, and technically held back the computer revolution in favor of its own ends, and helping others find an alternative, and realising that there is not only one company, or so I thought.

Maybe the site is under a transistion. Maybe it has become more than the Webmaster anticipated. Maybe its outgrown the original plan and needs to push itself as a non M$ computer help and discussion site. By all means bash M$, but maybe it is time for this site to make an effort to show people the way, rather that criticise what they are using, often through their own ignorance and the removal of their options by companies such as Dell. I know this is what many people try, but the site is still geared towards M$ is crap rather than everything else is better. This immediately gets people in fighting mode.

This site made it very easy for me to get what I was looking for, and it still does, and I like to help others find the light, without bashing them over the head, that is how the dominant forces work, I want to show then it is their choice. I have no personal interest in their choice of computer software, but man the alternatives actually make you want to do stuff with your computer, and make it possible. And I want to add my voice to the thousands telling those that have failed to see the corruption being spread by M$ and support of the DMCA, and RIAA, et al.

There has been a drop off in posting recently, and I think its down to the fact that the quality of threads has deteriorated recently. People are a little bored of giving the same answers to the same questions being posted by the same trolls. At least when Linux User was posting under his nom de plume his posts were often aimed at a specific point and contained insight, it wasn't the same old your just fucking stupid crap that I get from M$ Windows idiots every fucking day when they find out I don't use M$.

I don't know, I'm just voicing what I sense is becoming a common thought amongst people posting on this forum. I don't need to justify myself, but when I learn something, I want to share it with someone who may have an interest. At the moment that is my feedback to the Open source community.

To quote a member of this board - It's about spreading the freedom.

I agree. And we are helping users through things like the MES FAQ, and the Linux & Mac forums in general.

As for thread quality, we [the mods] are working on it...there are more mods in case you haven't noticed. Calum is still around pretty frequently too.

Dunno about anyone else but i ve had a bit of a problem connecting to the forum recently, particulary in the past few weeks. Maybe that would explain the lack of threads if it's not just me thats having the problem
