Title: OpenSUSE net install
Post by: hm_murdock on 24 July 2006, 02:05
Anything I should know before I start? I'm going to install it on a blue G3 300 with 128MB of RAM.

Sorry, I don't feel like giving up the dual 500 G4 (recent acquisition) to Linux just yet :p

You should know that finding software that you don't have to build yourself will be difficult.  Other than that, good luck, report any issues.

Well, I'm doing it mostly for experimentation's sake.

I decided to use the network install method... I get the feeling I didn't do something right. They say something about hitting F3 and F4 to select the install protocol at the bootscreen, and I didn't. I let it boot to the menu, and then began the network install there. So far, it's gotten to loading YaST2 twice and hung.

It seems to be doing something this time. We'll see.

I did a net install once and it was incredibly slow - not to mention that it took several tries to get it right.

I tried to make a netboot cd for my new Beige G3 but it just crashes when I try to boot it with BootX.

I'm having the same problem. It gets to the "Loading YaST2" bit, and hangs.

Does anybody know of a PPC Linux distro that comes on a single CD? I really REALLY don't feel like downloading seven or eight images just for something I'm going to play with.

Update!

Trying Ubuntu 6.06 now. I've heard lots of good things about Ubuntu... let's see if this Swahili sounding Linux can bust some ass.

UHURU!! (that means freedom in Swahili, you tossers)

I would have suggested PPC Debian, bundled with all the obsolete software you could ever imagine.

Uh, thanks for reviving a dead thread without adding anything useful to the discussion.  Are you planning to go through the entire archive like this?
