I'm the same. I don't have a lot of games to play on the PS1 yet, but I've been trying to get Duke Nukem TTK for a while. I bought one of those USB-to-PSX controller adapters and a controller, the total cost was about $15. It kicks ass.

You can get them at radioshack or online, they're pretty cheap and really worth the dollar. I hate playing emulators with a keyboard.

Indeed. The Dreamcast was the first with online multiplayer support and kick ass graphics. They didn't use DVD's though, but some weird 1 GB CD-ROM.

Not even you would believe that. It's not only fake, it's so badly done that I have to suspect that it's intentionally shit.

Besides... SMB2J runs only on a Japanese Famicom or an emulator. Good luck finding a working copy for either.

Agreed.

The thing is real. They've been selling these "super multi-video game" things for some time now. The ones I've seen have a cheapo little N64-looking controller than plugs straight into the TV. it can also accept regular NES carts, because it's a nintendo shrunk to be painfully tiny.

EDIT: Deleted Restin's post because it served no purpose, and I felt having one pseudo-trolling post was enough. Two would be completely stupid.

I expect all posts in this forum to have actual content. Further trolling will be dealt with appropriately.

There were several add-on modules for the genesis including the Sega CD and the 32X.  The Sega CD was a really nice add-on.  Not only did it have the CD drive, but it added a second CPU (not sure if it was true SMP, but it did make a noticable  boost in processing power). It also increased the RAM available  and contained some battery powered RAM for storage of game data (think the playstation memory cards permanently integrated into the console).

There were 3 models of the genesis console.  The second was designed to be more compact and noticably lacks the headphone jack and headphone jack volume slider.  The third model was called the CDX.  It was pretty sweet, consisting of a Sega Genesis and Sega CD in an integrated, portable package (didn't work with the 32X module though).

The Sega Nomad system might also be considered the fourth version of the Genesis.  It was a handheld unit that played genesis catridges and had a small color LCD screen.

$129.95 Australian dollars!!!! which is about $95.00 US dollars!!!!. For fuck sake....it sells for about teh same amount as a GameCube.

1. harddrive standard
First harddrive implementation was on japanese Famicom (Family Computer or NES) with Legend of Zelda. I will hardly quality harddrive as standard as Flash RAM will soon replace it. At the moment, having a HD for the console make the Xbox an easy target for either hackers and crackers.

I currently have a Sega Dreamcast though I will consider to get Nintendo Gamecube.

so you don't have to spend more money on a memory card that does not hold as much as the hard-drive.
and there ARE memory cards for xbox for that exact reason, although I beleive that there are experimenting with roaming saved games via vbov live.

what if I think their music sucks? and support is up to the choice of the game dev. Halo has no support for that, but has a kickass soundtrack.

I have had a single ps2 8 mb memory card for 3 years and it has over 30 games saved on it and is still not full. Plus I can take just the memory card over to my friends house, and play my saved games on his PS2, tell me how you can do that with a hard drive?

If their music sucks that is the developers fault. Look at games like Gran Turismo 3, and the excellent soundtrack it had. If nothing else I can easily play a CD on my home theater system, while playing a game.

The big clunky old controllers, and even the smaller, yet still too big newer controllers are just plain shit. If you notice, the newer controllers are a blatant rip off of the shape of the ps2 controller.

1. um, well first off you wouldnt really need to, because you could just bring yours and use yours.  or they can go out and be a little sissy bitch and get action reply and not actually deserve the fucking tvr speed 12 and get the good players like myself flamed....(sorry, personal thing...)

2. um lets see pgr2 had hundreds of tracks, about maybe 10 of which i liked...

3. i dont really see how you can call those crappy controllers, i personally love the large one and hate the controller S, but i dont know how you can call them crappy, almost every button is pressure sensative on them.

4. games cant "suck ass" thats completly opionion is is controllers and music preference.  i like lots of xbox games and think that they are alot better then any other system games.

to someone elses post that xbox doesnt have any "must have games"...lol no other system does either, the only must have game on ps2 is gran turismo 3, which is going to be utterly bested by a new xbox racing game which include basically everything you can thing of.  if youve played nfsu, it has that aspect of which you can make your car look how you want it to.  while having the same aspect of gt3 in which you can upgrade your car to how you like it and tune it how you want it to a greater extent ten both of the games mentioned above.

and xbox does have some must have games, if you like racing theres Toca racedriver 2 (a bit wierd but nice) pgr2, and rallisport challenge 2 (the godliest).  in the first person shooters class they have rainbow six 3, counterstrike (god knows why...).

I didn't like Halo much. It's fun for a while, but the whole atmosphere of the game isn't right. Maybe it's because the people who made this game didn't have fun making it. I can tell by looking at the atmosphere, and the originality it. It isn't quite good in Halo.
Age of Empires however (which was also made by Microsoft) is a very good example of the authors having fun while making it. The atmosphere is kick ass, the levels are creative and the cheats are too much fun to handle.

Oh right, Halo. Well, I didn't like it. Seems the authors had a really though boss who didn't tolerate creativity or not following the almighty script.

I have the following consoles:
- NES
- N64
- GCN
- GBC
- PS2
- Megadrive 2

I used to have loads more, but don't have them anymore. I also have a SNES emulator on my PC.

If I was to list them all in order of preference, with my favourite at the top, it'd be like this:
- SNES emulator
- N64
- NES
- Megadrive 2
- GCN
- GBC
- PS2

Gameboy Color
Cameboy Advanced
Gameboy Advanced SP
Atati
XBOX

Though I really dislike Microsoft I still think XBOX is over-all the best modern console, besides Dolby Digital is the company that actually makes the XBOXes, and I don't think the controllers for XBOX suck any more than the controllers for any other console.

:Morrowind. Halo, DOA3, Fable, Halo 2, Gladius, Splinter Cell (best on the Xbox), Knights of the old republic, Marvel vs Capcom 2,Rainbow Six three, Brute Force. The point of a Hard Drive is so that games load faster and that you can listen to your own music, which is as some of you a stupid reason because the game designers put great music in their games allready, even thou I would love to agree its simply not true. I mean the music may be good to some people but tastes in music vary so widly thats its almost impossible to get a good song to everyone who plays the game. I dont understand your complaint about the controller slots. The reason Few games use it (even though enough use them for it to be noteable) is because most games are foolishly posted. You dont have to waste your money on Memory cards, while other weaker systems you have to buy memory cards for are the same price.

I have a ten page artivle about how the Dreamcast is more powerful than the Ps2 even though its two years older. I will tell give the link at anyones request. even if some dissagre I find the games On DC to be for the most part better.

I would like it for you to say the facts not just assumptions. Im not trying to be a jack ass but you can sway alot of people with lies.

That killed my reply, doesnt look like what I posted at all? I am sorry thou I normaly dont post three times in a row but some things came to my noggin after I posted and I felt needed to be said. The reason for not editing is I have been posting on My gaming clan boards and they dont have an edit button (which I find odd and dumb). almost all the controlers in the gaming world are simply the evoled versions of its the console before it. Ps2= Saturn X-box=Dream cast GameCube=?????. Nintendo has made it "their thing" to make odd controlers. While the N64 was great the Game cube conts I dislike.

I have had a single ps2 8 mb memory card for 3 years and it has over 30 games saved on it and is still not full. Plus I can take just the memory card over to my friends house, and play my saved games on his PS2, tell me how you can do that with a hard drive?

Man if you play games alot you will soon understand that you run outta save. I have 4 mem cards for my PS and they are all except one chock full of data. Also if its that hard to simply unplug you xbox and carry it then you need to stop gaming anyway. I mean if you friend does have an xbox he has the cords and a tv so just unlplug the darn thing and bring it over. With two Xbox'es you can do alot of cool stuff too so the thought of "should I bring it over?" should never occur in your X box head.

Here you can take your Xbox downtown and get the all region mod + a HUGE FRIGGIN HD + about 100 games installed. All for the low low price of about 100,000 Won. That's about $70.00 (USD). In PS2 all I can get is a multi region chip that allows me to play dvds regardless of NTSC or PAL format and all region games, for 50,000 Won (About $35.00 (usd)).

A lot of peeps are opting for the XBox here based on those reasons alone.

I currently own a Gamecube and a Gameboy Advance.  I bought the cube for Soul Calibur 2 and F-Zero GX, but became addicted to Super Mario Kart Double Dash and Ikaruga later on.  Not to mention it has a PPC CPU, so it appeals to my Mac-loving side.

In the past I've owned: Atari 7800, Master System (my favorite machine of them all), Genesis, NES, SNES, PSX, Dreamcast, and a Gameboy (the original B&W model).  I have a tendency to sell machines once they are replaced by a newer generation.  The Master System (and all of its games) is the only one I really regret selling, just because they're a bit harder to find -- especially in the condition I kept mine.

When the ROM scene became big it was like a dreamworld for me: tons of games I wanted to try as a child all at my fingertips.  Buy a PSX > USB converter from Radio Shack and emus are as good as the real thing.  In fact, I kind of prefer playing NES on a nice crisp 17" LCD.

There's one machine I haven't been able to enjoy in emulation though: my c64.  Waiting for the 1541 to load, hearing the drive click and clatter, and using the actual machine is part of the whole experience to me.  Pick up or construct one of these (http://sta.c64.org/xe1541.html) and you can write disk images directly from your PC to a 1541 drive.  Anyone know of a way to do this with modern (USB) Macs?

Oh and about the "Super Megason" -- it's very real.  I was going to pick a similar system up once but figured it would be PAL, and useless on any of my televisions.

Systems I never owned but always admired (despite whether it was justified or not): Atari Jaguar, second generation Atari Lynx, TG16 and TG Express (or PC Duo, depending on where you're from), and the Sega Saturn.

Hmm, surprised nobody has mentioned the Apple Pippin[URL] in this thread. (http://www.theapplecollection.com/design/macproto/Pippin.html)

"why hasnt anyone mentioned the knights of the old republic (kotor) which would not be possible without the hardrive.I personally think the x-box is the best next gen system. "

Because these games were designed for a particular system. Much like FFXI were designed to use harddrive. In other other words, these games can be done if hardware manufactures wish to create a HDD for their consoles.

we have a playstation, and i also own a sega megadrive and a master system convertor for the megadrive (they are at my parents' house though, as is my sega saturn, luckily i wasn't loyal enough to buy a dreamcast, although i did think it was interesting that it had internet capabilities). we also got an atari 2600 back when they were still the bee's knees but it has conked out now. I don't tend to play a lot of games now, let alone console ones, but i find the likes of zsnes do me fine, since i really only want to play pacman and bomberman games these days. i could do with a decent turbografx emulator though as there are 3 bomberman games for it, also the bomberman story game is the best of the lot, i think it is for N64 (actually the banjo kazooie games for N64 were good too, i finished both when i had the time, and the excellent goldeneye game is a must too. Oh yes pilotwings too, it was a lot better for N64 than for SNES)

I agree, especially when you first encounter the monsters.
Modern shooters like DOOM III and Half-Life II have enemies which are scary (I can't decide which ones are more scaries, the ones from DOOM III or Half-Life II).

The enemies from Halo II look cute. Really. Just look at it (http://gamerskey.net/ScreenShots/Xbox/Halo%202/Halo%2022.jpg).
What the fuck is that supposed to be? Someone who just went to the fucking gay bar and is now holding some stupid candle fireforks thingy which looks totally rediculous?

Really, for fun with vehicles and great and fun gameplay (and characters who don't look like they where designed by a 14-year old) I'll stick to Unreal Tournament 2004 (http://www.unrealtournament.com/).

Most people don't give it a chance.  I think it's an incredibly cool machine, and for some odd reason I admire that they've created a copy-protection mechanism that's not easily defeated.

Every system has their own strenghths and weaknesses.

PS2 is good, it has more games by sheer volume, but has the weakest hardware, and a half-ass online strategy.  So-So controller.  Katamari Damacy
GameCube is good, has many good games, but the total are few in number, library is lacking.  Horrible Controller, Lacks online play altogether.  Super Smash Prothers Melee
Xbox is good, limited selection, but a few gems, strongest hardware,  Solid and perfect online play. great contoller.  Halo and Halo 2

remember, this is all my person opinion.
I love all three systems, but none are perfect, so I prefer to not gloss over the flaws of one, and tear open the flaws of another.

And for the record, I love the large Xbox Controller, it fits my hands like a glove.  And my subsription to Xbox Live is well worth it.

Wow, I could have written that post myself!

It seems its rare that I find someone else who likes the large Xbox controller. I think it's perfect, and I'm very sad that they don't make them anymore. I do understand that the D-pad on it isn't ideal for fighting games - and I will concede that point. But everything else about it... the feel, the triggers, the layout... it all works so very well.

The PS2 controller I never found to be all the great. It could stand to be a little bit bigger, although I think my biggest gripe is that using the analog sticks doesn't feel natural. It's the best standard-type controller for fighting games, though.

The GameCube controller is an embarassment. The thing is so tiny and cheaply made that I feel like I'm going to crush it in my hands. The triggers have good range (unlike the PS2 ones), but they make this horrible "spring-y" sound when you press them all the way. It gives an awful tactile sensation and sounds just plain awful. The button layout is just completely wrong... Aside from the A and B buttons being backward, the positioning of the buttons is completely counter-intuitive. I always say it's as if some genius at Nintendo said "Jee, where should we put the buttons? I know! We'll flick some water at it and put a button wherever a drop lands!"

The Xbox "S" controllers are a good compromise between the PS2 controller and the proper positioning of the analog sticks. However, the placement of the black and white buttons is all wrong. They should never have been moved.

Oh, and Xbox Live has been so perfectly executed.  I wasn't sure how they were going to make it any better than it already is - but the plans for the next-gen Xbox Live laid out at GDC sound fantastic.

Weird... I seem to be the only one here who actually likes the Gamecube controller.

It fits perfectly, and all the buttons are reachable. It's also an improvement from the Nintendo 64 controller, which had that RSI thumb thingy.

I like the PS 2 controller too. And they improved the Xbox controller, by not making it huge.

The last console I purchased was a N64.........big mistake IMO. A poorly designed controller (the analogue stick was too fragile), and a serious lack of good games. A voice in the back of my head was telling me to get a Playstation.....I should have listened. Before the N64 there was my trusty old SNES.......many sweet memories. To me it'll always be the god of 16-bit. Whilst on the topic of 16-bit, was Australia the only place where the Sega Genesis was known as the Sega Megadrive??? That's one mystery I'd like to figure out.

I have to agree with the general sentiment that Halo sucks. I played the PC version and found it soooo underwhelming, even for a console FPS (I'm not sure if I'll ever be comfortable with playing FPS on a console). Halo's graphics were so-so, and the game just didn't 'grab' me. Plus, because it was a Microsoft product, it was an absolute resource hog!!!! Only Microsoft could make a product that runs like diarrhea on its own OS.

After holding out for such a long time, I may finally return to console gaming with a PS2. I have been pulled in by the greatness that is Gran Turismo 4. GT3 just didn't have enough pulling power for me......but with 700 cars (including a Ford Model T!!!!!) I just can't resist.

It was MegaDrive everywhere except America (maybe all of North America).  In the US the name MegaDrive was already trademarked.  I always thought the Super Famicom looked much better than the SNES.  The US version was too blocky looking.

Seconded. The Super Famicom (and Famicom by extension) looked way better than their North American counterparts. Nintendo got closer to "right" with the toploading SNES mark II.

Either way, all my consoles look the same these days: in a bin in my garage, games with them, all but replaced by emulation.

Welcome back Jens... You won't know me, I didn't exist in 2004...

So anyhow, I've never owned a console, but there's been a PS1, dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360 in this house. Only one of them we have ATM is the '360. On HDTV it's pretty damn cool (waay better improvement than I expected).

I think we had a megadrive at one stage too, but I'm not sure if it actually was a megadrive or what, but I know it was a sega... (also had loadsa gameboys)

I preferred the dreamcast to all of them - Toy Racer and Soul Calliber kicked ass on it, single and multi-player. I don't play games as much as I used to now...

Had an NES since I was 4, found a gameboy when I was like 10, got a GBC, that got stolen, got a PS2(release date model, had many PS games well before hand since I used to play at my friend's house and I knew that the PS2 was going to be backwards compatible), MGS3: Subsistence is kicking ass right now,  and a mini station with the screen and a battery pack(was a gift), got a GBA(damn the screen tho, seems it's is the hardest to see, SP is easy to see but causes hand cramps from being tiny as hell) not really looking for any of the new consoles, may pick up a Genesis and an SNES. For most every other kind of console I knew someone that had it and would play on theirs, made me pretty good at "hit n' run" gaming, where I can pick up a game pretty quickly and get to beating on everyone else I'm playing against.

PCs suck for gaming, ooo, wow, it has such good graphics that I need to upgrade my comp once a year. No thank you, I'll wait to see what console sucks the least games wise and company wise, this round looks like shit in all 3 directions. Unless sony has exclusive rights to the MGS and final fantasy series I may be seeing a revolution in the future. Provided that it's controller doesn't suck too badly. The dual shack 2 is still the best controller there is with the genesis 6 button the near 2nd.

Current games are Armored Core(the whole damn series) Metal Gear 3: Subsistence (think I should get the headset) and Predator: Concrete Jungle. Prolly gonna get Soul Caliber 3, just waiting for a price drop, I almost never get a game that's $35 or more, only certain titles are good enough to warrant more then that.

Anyone besides me wish arcades where still popular? I loved playing games like Time Crisis, Terminator, House Of The Dead, Soul Caliber and many more, but you hardly ever see arcades around  anymore, and when you do the game prices are jacked way the hell up.

At one stage I thought the PS3 wouldn't be a bad console to have but Sony are trying far too hard to get this DRM and copy-protection shit into it. They recently officially delayed the release date in Japan, for the copy-protection shit, as I understand. FUCK THAT.

Nintendo revolution, all the way.
Title: Re: Do you have a console?

If Nintendo Revolution comes out in the next year or two I'll get it ... but the choice for consoles is now between XBox360 and PS3 ... or Vista ... I must play games, and I would prefer a console because PCs get old too fast and I hate Vista and M$ ... it's really picking the lesser of all evils ... which I'm not sure if I'm making the right choice. But really with 2 broken XBoxes on my hands XBox360 is completely out of my consideration.

I'd like to know exactly what DRM does on the PS3 to interfere with me using it any way I want to ... I'll look around for articles but maybe you know more ?

I wanna see what shite they come up with for the DRM too, because I think it should also have a contest like the put XP on an intelimac.

The revolution is coming out in April if I remember correctly

They've gone backwards as far as copy protection is concerned, they had it sorted back in the 90's when all consoles used cartridges.

My last console was a Genesis and I sold that many years ago. I do however do NES and Genesis emulution once in awhile for kicks. I have a geneis-style usb game controller for EMUs.

But you couldn't have coppied a game from one cartridge to another then played it in another machine.

Sony Playstation 2
Nintendo Gameboy Color (SUCKS BALLS)(BIG BIG BALLS)

I got the segas from second hand shops they both came with there real boxes and were only 20 dollars.

When I desided to see what I wanted new the market was a Sony Playstation 1 or a Sega Dreamcast. I wanted the dreamcast but when I got the money it wasn't on the market anymore. So I got a Playstation and I have been playstation even sinces.

Oh ... and I recently bought an Xbox360 ... I know, I know, I said I wouldn't buy one, but it was inevitable. I actually went to the store to buy a video card, but when I saw that it cost $400 I wasn't all for it. Then I walked past the XBox360s and they were $400 too ! So I though ... do I buy just a video card for $400 or a whole gaming console for $400 ? Well I chose the whole gaming console. I also figured that since the PS3 has a root kit I am very unwilling to buy into that (I don't want it destroying itself on me) ... and the fact that the Nintendo Revolution is far from revolutionary (they don't even have an HDD, or so I heard). I've had so many problems with memory cards on the PS1 that I NEVER, EVER, want to deal with them again !!! (I erased all my saved games cuz I saved in Gran Tourismo with way too many cars ... like at least several thousand)

Oh and it hasn't scratched any disks so far ... but there is a warning not to move the console while the disk is spinning. And it won't work with any XBox games I've tried so far (not backwards compatible ... not too big of a surprize)

What happened to the good old games ? I've been recently playing old Sega Genesis games (on an emulator for Linux ... generator) and find them infinitely more fun than any recent PC game, any XBox game (except Fable ... but it's too short to count for much), or any XBox360 game. How can this be ? Did all the good game devs die long ago ? Or did just their ideas die ?

[rant] I tell you the gaming industry disappoints me, It's hard to find a recent game that doesn't piss me off with it's shittiness. Where has the creativity gone ... there must be a million FPS clones ... they all look alike, same weapons, very similar storylines, etc. RTS games look very similar to one another too. Is it just the division of games that has done this ? I mean you got FPS, RTS, RPG, MMORPG, and a couple of others. And every new game has to fit into these categories ? Isn't there an "other" category ... or something different ? At least they could use some diversity within categories.

(Why am I posting this here and not in new thread ? I figure there will be approximately 1-3 responses to this post ... making for a very small thread. But it has a lot to do with this thread anyway.) [/rant]

Playing the old Genesis games I realized that most of the games don't really fit into categories ... I suppose most are side-scrolling, but that doesn't say anything about content ... the variety is impressive. And there was a lot more creativity ... there was a plot, there was a great storyline, truly epic games ... not the shit I see today :(

Apparently you didn't understand what I meant when I said "it's my job". As an IT professional, it's my job to know how to use various operating systems. There are pretty much two OS's today - Windows and *unix. I choose BSD as the Unix I use.

Windows is better for desktop functions and is also best for certain server (read: active directory) applications. I keep a BSD desktop up because it helps me to keep my unix skills sharp. The things that I use BSD for are server duties. My home DSL router and webserver is a BSD machine. Our spam filters at work are BSD and linux machines. We are about to impliment bandwidth management server that will be running FreeBSD at work soon. I also plan on using BSD or linux for some kiosk-type computers at work.

I know it's hard for your brain to comprehend, but there are some of us out there in the world that view operating systems as little more than tools (or perhaps 'workbenches'), and whos live don't revolve around on degrading or promoting certain operating systems.

Yes, but when one workbench tries to become the "only" workbench that anyone ever uses and does so through highly unethical, and subverise, and oppressive means ... then it becomes a problem. But, of course, there are the ignorant ones out there, who don't really give a fuck ... one workbench is just as good as another, if one takes over, go with the flow ...

Everything works in windows because everyone creates for windows. And by everything in the context which was used here I will assume it to mean things like console emulators out there.

I'll agree, they work better there in general. DirectX is bigger for it's use among programmers than anything on any other system. But xmame, zsnes, and a few ps1 emulators work just fine on linux. If you want genesis/nes/misc emulation you might try xmess.

Nope.  You're ignorant because you chose to take a quote out of context and feign offense to support your views.  Seriously though, if you don't care what system you use and don't care what practices take place in its development, then you most certainly are ignorant - in both the technical and ideological senses of the word.

Which quote did I take out of context? Was it the one where Tex, the guy who just recently learned how (http://www.microsuck.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10297) to shut his linux box down without the help of KDE, implied that I am ignorant about operating systems?

Ironically, one of the reasons I preffer FreeBSD over linux is what practices take place in it's development. I put the last part of your quote in bold because it illustrates my point quite nicely. Most everyone holds some sort of idealogical stance. Calling someone ignorant because they don't agree with your stance makes no sense. I am fully aware of why people choose to proselytize for linux and Open Source and against Microsoft, but me choosing not to subscribe to those beleifs does not make me "ignorant" in any sense.

If you were new around here, I might let that one slide - but you forget that
(a) while TexMex instigated the situation, rather than address his point, you chose hyperbole that did nothing but further the spite between both parties involved.
(b) you have made us PAINFULLY aware of your preferences.  I, for one, could NEVER convince myself that a system where you have to deal with blue screens, missing drivers, and broken dynamic libraries is somehow more "desktop-ready" than a solid-state kernel with static extensions.  This, however, remains my preference and mine only, but I wish you wouldn't make the wholly arrogant mistake that your view is the only one here.  Read the forum title, breathe, and  reconsider before you post.  If that gets to be too much for you, then please find a venue that might be more appreciative of your particular stance.  'Tis better to change the stance to the forum than to attempt to change the stance of the forum.

Actually, you managed to debunk my point quite thoroughly with that reply.  However, I think the problem is not so much that you advocate BSD - which is a level of brilliance on its own, but I won't address that here - but that you promote the usage of Windows on an anti-Microsoft forum.  Tell me, do you also go to movie boards on IMDB and post how much X movie sucks on its board?  If it's not ignorance, and it's not arrogance, then it's certainly a degree of masochism that I'm not comfortable with indulging on a daily basis.

Actually, I've never used KDE for more than 5 min total (I used GNOME then fluxbox). And as for shutting down my box without the WM, I learned that (forcefully) about a week after switching to Linux ... in GNOME my mouse sometimes stopped working, so the only thing to do besides a hard reboot would be bring up a terminal (with a hotkey), log in as root, and type in the shutdown command (yes my keyboard still worked). After I switched to fluxbox, this never happened again (except a few times while playing a few unstable games). And there was also the problem of nautilus crashing quite often.

Now, I thought I made most of that clear or realatively clear in the post you linked me to. But you still choose to insult me in some way ... I wonder why ... could it be that you really don't have too much of an argument going ?

Quote from: toadlife

Well let's define ignorance ...

"The condition of being uneducated, unaware, or uninformed." (Dictionary.com)

Looks like there are three possibilities ... uneducated (perhaps this one does not apply here, after all you are an IT), unaware (this one may not apply here either, as you are aware of both arguments), or uninformed (this might apply here if you are not aware of, or choose to ignore all the things M$ has done over the years, and yes most of these things were not good things)

Subscribing to beliefs has very little to do with ignorance. Ignoring the obvious has a lot to do with ignorance ...

Have you ever actually USED XP? I know everyone here loves to talk about XP as the worst thing ever, but it's honestly not that bad. I have had zero problems whatsoever in three to four years of using XP. As long as the user has half a brain, doesn't browse goat porn sites with IE running as root (to quote Toadlife), and runs a virus scan now and then, XP works fine.

Well ... I had XP on this computer for a while and it fucked up quite often. Besides, you can do much more with Linux, much faster, easier, no crashes, etc.

I remember how it felt to switch. Basically with Window$ you have to be gentle with it as if you're walking on thin ice that can break at any minute. It doesn't respond to the commands I give it, I doesn't let me delete some files and folders, etc. etc. I'm not gonna repeat all the downsides of all Window$ OSs in here, it's a waste of my time. If you like XP or Window$, then you've never tried anything else, or you're a masochist.

[offtopic]Not necessarily. Some people just like it. I remember not that long ago, there was a predominant member here who liked XP, He also liked Linux but was particularly fond of OS as well. He once said something like he knows this is an anti MS site, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with someone having a personal opinion which happened to be in favor of XP. Agreed, it is a strange preference to have when your a member of an anti MS forum. However, people are entitled to their opinions. I have found converting people has been much easier when I don't point out the flaws of windows and simply show the benefits of Linux. Some take it personal when you rant about how crap something they know and are comfortable with, is. It tends to make these people feel like they are being called idiots, most of which weren't even aware there were several other choices out there. If he prefers it or even likes it, it's up to him. Instead of doing the "TEH WINBLOWZ SUXORS!!!" Encourage them to set up a dual boot and play with it. Give them some forums and web sites for help. Show them how to access the distro instructions, and most importantly, make sure they know if they are stumped, they can call you for help....not at 3a.m. preferably. I'm not criticising anyone or pointing any fingers. I am just stating this has seemed to be much more effective for me. When I leave the appearance of choice and choose to inform rather than dictate, my convertees have been much more receptive and likely to at least try it...then the seed is planted.

I do find it odd, that an open source community, which bases it's very principles on various different kinds of freedom, generally acts with this elitist attitude that is a big turn off to someone who may genuinely be interested. Remember, Windows is forced on you, You have to go get Linux.[/offtopic]

Oh yeah, the best thing I ever did was to have the japanese chip installed to my PS2 while I was in Korea. I can now play all games, regardless of region and I can watch most regions DVD's. I have nos desire for any of the XBoxes or PS3 or the other consoles out there. PS2 does exactly what I want it too, plays games. That's what I bought it for after all.

Actually, if you can't take the time to make those work with some of these (http://jackaudio.org/applications) and maybe Wine (or Cedega (http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/games/view.mhtml?game_id=3618) if you'd prefer to pay for a supported system), then yeah - GTFO.

BTW, if you do decide to go the Wine route, try Googling for "DLL download" and see what turns up.  A number of those are helpful in getting new apps to work.  ;)

Since I have a Windows XP installation, I'll use those DLL's. JACK seems like it will work for sound editing, but I'll leave XP on there for gaming.

Why? I always feel urged to ask this. I am as guilty as the next guy, but haven't done it for a while. If I want to play games, I do it on my PS2. My PC CAN play games, but that's not what I have it for...I am more focussing towards people who ONLY play games on their computer. I seems like a pheonominal waste of money, when they could have gotten a system specifically designed to do it for much cheaper.

Personally, I despise playing games on a console. There are limited opportunities for online play, the hardware is behind the times (network connectivity for the PS2 is rather new, while PC games have been online since 1998,) and the PC has better graphics and is more versatile. I mainly use my PC for gaming, with a little bit of music production on the side, because I hate console gaming.

I certainly see and understand your point. I mean the PC DID offer much over consoles for a long time. Those times are passing though. I still believe the PC will be the platform that breaks new grounds for games, for exactly the reason you and I both pointed out. ! They're not versatile enough and 2 they are made to just play games (well, mostly, that's even changing now). Maybe it's just me being an old fart, I can't see spending $1200.00 just to play blood rayne2, Doom 3, Diablo 2 LOD, or any of the quake or Ultima games, not to mention the whole ass load of FPS out there. It seems to me I could put that money where it is used more wisely than a PC for playing games...then there's the whole buying the game expense as well...Yeah, I guess I am an old fart.

Haha, I'm probably going to buy a Gamecube next month... can't be missing 2 Zelda games.

And for better graphics, I'm probably going to buy a 32" LCD tv this weekend.

Since refurbished Gamecubes are down to like $60, it'd be better to get one now.  Then by the time I'm ready to play the next generation of Zelda games, the Wii will be cheap too.  No reason to pay the "so new it costs more" premium.

There were actually people camped (tents and all) in front of Best Buy waiting for the PS3.  Considering that Best Buy is having a 12% off sale that starts Friday, these fuckers will probably make a ton of money on Ebay.

That's because they're gouging the hell out of people.  I'm actually enthusiastic about the Revolution (to hell with "Wii", it's the most hack-kneed promo concept I've ever heard), mostly since it can play "drive-based images of older games" and apparently DVDs - can you say ROMs and ISOs?  :)

I heard on CNN (from the pres of NintendoAmerica) today that the Revolution/Wii will not be a dvd player.  Too many dvd players in the US already, and they wanted to keep the price point down ($249).  Still, it does accept 12cm discs of some kind, so maybe you can fuck around in there.

I also found out about the newest Zelda game, "Twilight Princess" today.  Sounds like a good one.  Then, I found out that it was a Wii game.  Lame, that means I have to buy a new goddamm console!  But then, I found out the truth: "Twilight Princess" will be released for the GameCube on Dec 12th.  Thanks to Nintendo for that:

I would not recommend the Xbox360, the games for it are shit ... even shittier than those for the Xbox. (I own one and I can't find any good games for it ... only games for the braindead or the extremely violent and sick in the head)

To be fair, the games from Rare and Ensemble Studios (which are both taken over by Microsoft) for the Xbox 360 are pretty good (if not genious, in the case of Conker's Bad Fur Day).

I read on G4TV.com that xbox 360 still has better graphics than ps3.
For me it will hinge on RTCW2. If it only releases for 360 then that's the next gen console I'll be buying. And I have to admit, GOW looks pretty damn cool! (Not to mention HALO 3!!)
P.S. I'm one of the violent types texmex mentioned

halo 3 = only good game tht will come out for the xbox 360(solely)
ps3 = intill you have played it or been next to someone playing it youle never know if does have better graphics, i think it does because i sit next to my friend half the time while hes playing his.
xbox360= its madee by m$ come on ppl it shouldent be trusted. its totaly a waste, like who wants to pay to use xbox live or pay 60 bucks to be able to watch dvds on ur xbox?? when you can do all tht for free on ps plus ps3 online updates. xbox is gunna stay shitty till i die... have any of you seen saints row for xbox360 it looks worse the GTAIII tht came out how long ago?
IF you vote me for president i will seethat avery xbox, xbox360 and any other ms software or product be burned in a huge fire:) viva la linux

Halo 2 sucked, so I don't expect much from (nor will I buy) Halo 3. However if they come up with a Fable 2 ... I probably will buy it. $ony is no better than M$ ... in fact, because it is DRM'd so heavily it is probably worse than M$ at this point.

The real question remains: what are left handed people supposed to do with the remote and the nunchuk?

Use it left handed? As far as I can tell it's ambidexterious.

But, like in Zelda for example, Link is holding his sword in his right hand (although he was left handed in the previous Zelda games), and you see tennis players in Wii Sports holding the racket in the right hand.

Wouldn't that create a problem?

Such next gen consoles MUST not ignore the left handed!

Learn to use the right hand like 90% of the human population?

The wiihaveaproblem.com site is just retarted. The only problem with the wii is that dumbasses lose control of the remote. That's a user error, not a problem with the wii.

So, since then we've had a Wii which was sold to get a PS3. I liked the Wii MUCH more than the PS3, which I've spent about 10 minutes at in however many months we've had it. Well, I'll spend more time at it when Final Fantasy comes out, or when there's some decent multiplayer football game and everyone comes home. That's if it's not sold to get another excellent-ly overpriced console that'll last us a few weeks before a good game comes out.

The Wii rocked though. But the Dreamcast I've defo enjoyed more than anything else, still.

I don't know about Zelda, but in Wii Sports, you can tell it that you're using your left hand.

Anyway, the Wii is cool. Great controls. Wii Sports is pretty fun, especially multiplayer mode.
I also bought Excite Truck, which is great for a launch title.
The Opera browser is the best embedded browser I've seen. Some would argue the lack of tabs, but I believe that would confuse some people, mainly non-gamers which is now also Nintendo's target audience.

If you want some games that are nice for a few hours, get an Xbox 360. If you want state of the art graphics and sound, get a PS3.
If you actually want to have fun gaming, get a Wii!

The PS3 browser seems cool and has great tab support - use the back buttons to scroll between them.
