Post by: TheKnifeThrower on 21 June 2003, 17:48
About 2 weeks ago I got my copy of mandrake linux 9.1. It rocks and I want to use it more often but there are some things which mean I sometimes have to use windows.

I have some games which were designed for windows. Is there a free product which allows me to play these games in linux. Don't say wine because it sucks.

And that's about it. Can you people help me.

Any emulator sucks. That's it. Especially treating windows games - direct hardware access, semi-closed API, using windows bug-features, so there's nothing to expect. Play Linux games or keep dual-booting.

Anyway emulators is a BAD thing.

I belive UT2k3 has a Linux port right on the CD--search google. As for the other games, VMWare may be your ticket (if your computer is powerful enough).

The UT2K3 linux port is only for the server version of UT2003. So I can run a server on my linux box but cant play the game.

And Is VMWare free? If it isn't then I'll just have to download a copy using kazaa lite.

It isn't free, but you can download an evaluation copy off of their site. Google it.

You can get a CVS version of WineX from here somewhere:

WineX works well for a good amount of games. I do know of Win4Lin but it isnt free. It uses your Windows installation to run Windows software, unlike WINE which tries to implement the whole thing. Hey, WINE is making some leaps and bounds every once in awhile. A LOT of apps dont work yet but without WINE I would be fucking ANGRY. Why? I hate gnutella, because there are no good clients. I tried some of the other stuff available on Linux. Wasn't happy with it. Then I installed WINE with apt-get and started trying all the filesharing apps I could with it. Kazaa, wont install. Kazaa Lite, wont run. Grokster, wont run. WinMX.... success. I will be the first to tell you, WinMX works *absolutely* *perfect*. No problems. Feels like it was *designed* for Linux! Ahh except for the ugly Windows UI...

You are absolutely wrong. The full version of UT2003 for linux is included. I know because I run it.

Enemy Territory is my current addiction. It runs on Windows *and* Linux, natively. Google for 'wolfenstein enemy territory linux' to find it.

It's free also. Runs great on my GeForce 2 MX 32 mb card, except for that one grass level that I always forget the name to :-D lol

Great game, get it, whether your on Win or Lin

IF we could just get more people in linux box's then maybe people would make games for Linux ?

Anyways this is another problem that os ten is having.  However i don't think the people who invent these operating systems play many games.

This is a list of the games I play natively on my linux box. UT2003, RTCW, Enemy Territory, Quake3. The next is a list of games I play using wineX 3.1 Max Payne, SimCity 4, WarCraft III, Diablo 2, and Hoyle Casino. Not bad for linux huh.

By the way Im not usually so giving, but if you are interested in aquiring winex 3.1 for free email me at [email protected] you might get some "Interesting Materials" sent your way.

LOL!!!!!!

Try out a Super Nintendo, Nintendo, Genesis, Sega Master System, Gameboy, and perhaps Playstation 1, Nintendo 64, and Gameboy Advance emulator, than come back here and tell me emulators suck.  ;)

Ok emulating an OS just to run programs is different for sure, but the point is that I'm challenging the idea that an emulator is guranteed to be greatly inferior to the real thing.
