Title: Radio has turned to shit
Post by: Xeen on 29 August 2004, 01:05
I've been listening to a lot of radio this past week because I've been spending a lot of time in the car. As I've been listening, I've noticed a new fucked up pattern. I dunno, maybe it's not new, but it's new to me cause I dont listen to the radio that much.

On many stations I noticed 3 things happening repeatedly:

Songs don't start from their actual real beginning but from approx 10 secs into the song. And they don't end at the real ends but a few seconds before they just quickly fade out.

OR

The songs that are played are the concert versions of them. The beginnings and the ends are interrupted with cheering and clapping.

OR

In the middle of the song, it is suddenly interrupted and a bunch of DRM sounds are played for like 10 seconds.

Thank you RIAA you greedy selfish pieces of shit.

On a similar note, a lot  of stations down here like to have the DJ babble 10-15 seconds into the song.  Same deal.

Luckily, the Classic Rock stations I listen to don't do that very often (if ever).

It's your area then as the one radio station I listen too that plays new music www.1077theend.com (http://www.1077theend.com) has policies that the DJ not talk over the song among others.  Since last new year I've only heard a DJ talk over one song, even then he apologised because he hadnt heard it in years.

So... sucks to be in your area!    (http://tongue.gif)

What's worse, about half the radio stations and 2 tv stations are Clear Channel. There's nothing but crap on the radio

I quit listening to radio 10 years ago.  I was waiting for grunge rock to go away but when it did, it was replaced with empty-headed brittney spears crap.

I looked into Internet radio after this thread and found this:

www.9412.com (http://www.9412.com)

Besides liking the music, it's amazing how you can sense the "non-corporate" feel, even in a typical rock station.

If you guys are interested in experimenting with something new, and have about $200 to spare, you could always look into creating your own radio station.  Granted, I haven't looked into this since the early-mid 90s, you can easily buy FM or AM transmitter kits assembled or preassembled and broadcast right out of your house.

The caveat is (at least in the US) you can only legally broadcast with a few watts of power.  Of course, if you're using AM you can reach a significant distance with only a few watts.  Back in the day I used to study alt.radio.pirate pretty thoroughly, so that might be a good place to start.

Yeah you won't reach as many people as just using a shoutcast stream, but you'll learn something about electronics -- especially if you build the kit yourself.  Just make sure you check up on all the legalities of things before you start playing.
