Title: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: Aloone_Jonez on 20 October 2005, 16:02
Come and get your copies.
http://www.openoffice.org/

Edit:
I've just downloaded it and it's the same size as RC3 so I did an FC and it turns out that it is RC3 so if you're using RC3 you don't need to download it.

is it M$ compatible ?
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: Aloone_Jonez on 20 October 2005, 16:31
It's 99% M$ compatalbe, it doesn't support macros and some other things like the positioning of shapes change when you open MS Office documents, but most of time there aren't any problems.

Checkout one of the OpenOffice FAQs (http://www.openoffice.org/faq.html)

I'll wait for the Dutch version (which will not take long) ;)

Dutch apples are nice but they don't beat the British ones. :D

Is the Linux version a big tarball of RPMs, like the betas and RCs?

Because that pisses me off.  Version 1.1 had a good distro-independent installer.

Yep.
What distro do you use? Alot of them should be providing it soon enough.

Slackware.

EDIT: Found a package for 2.0rc3.  It's for 10.2, not 10.0 like I have, but I'll try it out.
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: WMD on 21 October 2005, 06:31
Follow-up:  It turns out that the "10.2" package was just a repackaged version of the "tarball of RPMs" binary from the website.  So it works just fine.  It's RC3, so apparently I'm not missing anything. :)

If (like me) you hate RPMS then post your view here (http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=17814&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15).
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: WMD on 21 October 2005, 21:04
It's not that I hate RPMs, it's that a major program only has official binaries in RPM format.  It also sucks in this case, because OpenOffice already HAD a generic installer that didn't require any package system, and they got rid of it.
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: Aloone_Jonez on 21 October 2005, 22:02
Yes that's true and that's (in my opinion) one of the good things about most Windows programs and the bad thing with most Linux programs, apart from OpenOffice 1.x and Firefox, I can't think of any others at the moment. Seriously I think they should get their heads out of their arses and bring back the old installer, they could still support packages if they wanted to.

It depends on the platform, and you always order a CD you know.

I decided just to download it. 150MB for the Mac.

Damn right, because operating system bloat is directly proportional to the size of the OpenOffice.org packages for that OS.

My guess is that they don't use the same compression techniques.

PS: Windows is bloated.

Well the Windows package is smaller than the Mac OS one so by your logic this means that Mac OS is more bloated than Windows.

However you could (if you want to) argue that Windows is superiour as Windows OpenOffice is smaller as Windows has a more comprehensive API so the developers don't have to write as much code.

But I do admit this is complete bullshit, the size of a piece of software bares no relation to whether the OS it's designed for is bloated of not.

Lastly I was joking in the first place as the :D  smilie should indicate.

I knew you didn't really believe that Mac OS X is more bloated than Windows (yea, right), and I was being sarcastic in my first sentence.

Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: WMD on 29 October 2005, 22:02
Coding is not the issue here, rather, it's the fact that Windows binary files, are, for some reason, much smaller than those for other OSs.  Although, the difference isn't usually as much as this.  It could be that 2.0 for Mac is still X11 native and OS X is missing a lot of that sort of stuff.
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!

OpenOffice for OSX is still X11 native.

When 1.1.3 came out, I gave it a try and almost immediately went back to using Office XP. Since using 2.0, I have no plans of going back to MS Office again. If you're looking a free alternative to MS Office, OO.org 2.0 is definetly the way to go.
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: Aloone_Jonez on 2 November 2005, 21:25
I've used it since 1.1.2 because my PC came with the shitware commonly known as MS Works and my old Office 97 CD is broken and I certainly wasn't going to buy the latest version. In my oppinion OO 1.1.5 wasn't as good as MS Office but 2.0 is at least equal to MS Office 2000 (I haven't used any newer version) even though it does lack in some ways as does MS Office.

What did you dislike about OO 1.1.3?
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: H_TeXMeX_H on 3 November 2005, 00:10
I liked 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 better than 2.0 . Why ?

Cuz 2.0 crashes too often, 1.1.5 never crashed on my system, but I still use 2.0, there's no point in going backwards.
Title: OpenOffice 2.0.1 is now out!

I'm downloading my copy now.

H_TeXMeX_H,
Hopefuly 2.0.1 is more stable.

They finally released the Dutch OpenOffice.org 2.0.1!

I noticed that it didn't have Dutch spellingschecker at first, but that was easily solved by downloading it from Bestand > Assistenten > Nieuwe woordenlijsten installeren
A few clicks later the Dutch spellingschecker was installed

If you have the new mail merge feature, it's 2.0.1. They could've just not bothered to update the about page, or care little about the minor number (although it should still be shown somewhere, IMO).
And make sure it's 2.0.1 that you downloaded!
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!

I've found a help page on mail merge so I'm assuming it's 2.0.1.

I would tell you if they hadn't switched to a shitty method of distribution in 2.0 (Fucking RPMs)

They have RPMS? Where?  All I could find  was this.

Code: [Select]

mobrien@kaos openoffice]$ ls
OOo_2.1.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz

Post by: solemnwarning on 20 December 2006, 15:04
They replaced the multi-distro binary installer they used to have with a tarball of RPMs
Title: Re: OpenOffice 2.0 is out now!
Post by: H_TeXMeX_H on 5 January 2007, 03:27
just extract the rpms into one folder and it will run statically just fine.

To do this you could use rpm2cpio then pipe to cpio to extract or (on slackware) rpm2targz :D

This is exactly the kind of probelm I've been talking about in the software installation thread.

Thanks you, I'll remember that if I ever use a non-rpm distro again.

How would a nube know you can do that?

I can't remember where now but I do remember being able to download a dep package from somewhere.

I'm assuming you want to install OpenOffice.org 2.1 on Ubuntu, just Google it.

no, i use dreamlinux but, seeing as ubuntu is the most popular distro, because its noob friendly it would make since to release some universal debs

Well, here is a script to get it all done in one shot ...

Using rpm2cpio and cpio:
Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh

tempdir=/tmp/oootmp$RANDOM

if test ! $# = 2
then
echo "Usage: `basename $0` inputfile outputdir"
echo 'For example:'
echo "`basename $0` OOo_2.1.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz /home/bob/Stuff"
else
mkdir $tempdir
tar -xzf "$1" -C $tempdir
cd $tempdir/*/RPMS
for i in *.rpm
do
rpm2cpio $i | cpio -id --quiet
done
mv opt "$2"
rm -rf $tempdir
fi

exit 0

I wish they would hurry up already and make it patchable so you didn't have to do a full replacement download every time. 141mb for v. 2.1 which is supposed to be the last Panther compatable issue.
