Title: my new comp!!
Post by: Master of Reality on 22 April 2002, 06:26
what d'ya guys think of my new linux computer:
cant remember the mobo
AMD Duron 1GHZ
64 MB onboard video
onboard 3D sound
128 MB RAM (i'm getting more)
onboard 10/100 Ethernet card
came with a 20GB HD and a DVD drive
SiS 650 chipset for the onboard stuff

i am taking out the 20GB HD and replacing with a 40GB and a 2GB.
i put in a CD burner. (this stuff is outta my old comp)

I am also "selling" the video out of my old comp, 20 GB HD,  ethernet out of my old comp, keyboard, mouse that came with it.

all together i will be spending $300
I have yet to get the video to work with linux red hat 7.2 ( i need SiS 650 chipset drivers)

i've seen quite a few people with those chipsets recently, and they are not supported by default in linux, you need to go to Thomas' site there (which is moving soon!), as Main said, and get the stuff, and install it like he says.

Maybe i am a total dumbass, but i find it difficult to follow some of the info on that page, so if you or anybody else has success with the SiS630 or other SiS chipset, please post instructions or hints here. I will do the same as i am going to set up mandrake 8 next week with my crappy SiS630 video card. Oh yes, that goes for SiS630 modems too, any bright ideas, let's hear them! ta...

dump the onboard video and just spend a few bucks (50 orso) for a geforce 2.....

that's my advice at least  (http://smile.gif)

aha! some of us are stuck with the onboard shit and no alternative since we bought a LAPTOP!!!!!
i suppose i'll just have to nut it out instead of running away from the problem!  ;)

i guess one of the other mods wanted this in the linux forum  (http://smile.gif) .

Yesterday i searched on google and got a link to www.webit.com/tw/sis630.html (http://www.webit.com/tw/sis630.html)
i guess it was an old link or something, because it didnt work.

My computer is still running.. not fast enough. Tux racer barely runs at all (cant race in it) is there somewhere in linux to set the CPU speed or something? The CPU was already installed on my mobo so i assume the mobo is set up correctly.

I can't figure out where the hell that Tux Racer came from but I've tried it on several machines and he ain't going to win no race. I think it would certainly help to be running an accelerated X/GL server (I am with my Geforce and it is actually playable but still nothing like Quake III).   (http://smile.gif)   For non-accelerated servers run xbill, it's more fun anyway.

even Xbill runs slow (as slow as my 200 MHZ pentium MMX with 80 MB RAM) I am using AMD Duron 1 GHZ with 128 MB RAM all of it was pre-installed and the only thing that i found a bit faster is mozilla. Do i not have something setup right?

I don't know what is the matter; Red Hat 7.2 ran everything, tux racer included, as fast as it is supposed to on my computer. (700 mhz Athlon /w 128 MB RAM)  Of course I had to download the accelerated drivers for my GeForce 256 video card from nvidia, but after that it ran programs much faster.

try mandrake 8.2  I have it running flawlessly, and there aren't many probs I've seen with any chipsets so far. The CPU speed should be automatically set, but memory is sometimes mis-reported. I mixed and matched and all is well. cheap mobo, amd athlon XP 1700+, 256 meg DDR, geforce 4mx and the linux nvidia drivers are very nice.As a rule I stay away from onboard stuff. The motherboard has enough to do anyway.

nice, my computer actually only has 64 MB RAM, the other 64 is used by my onboard video card

are you running KDE or Gnome or other? KDE is my choice, but memory intensive. these days even with linux 64 is low if you run any graphical environment. Gnome is noted to do better at limited memory, but some people don't see any difference. My first impression is that the memory is the hold up.

xbill runs slow??? Then you have definite problems! I've run xbill on 386 machines and it was fast.

ya, i'm gonna buy at least 128 MB of SD RAM or i might get some DDR RAM. does anyone know how much 128 MB chip of DDR RAM costs?

Last time I bought RAM was for the desktop I just put together. I believe it was only around $75 for 512MB so 128MB of DDR must be very cheap. I see the the place I buy all my parts say they have 128MB DDR for $39 on their web site. But they also say 512MB like what I bought is now $159 so prices must have went back up. Check out Rocky Mountain RAM or some of those other budget RAM places...

yes the prices were wuite low for a while then went back up. I believe that icould have gotten 128 MB SDRAM for $18. I might look into buying 256 (at least) of DDR RAM, i'll have to scrounge up some money though (its tough being a cheap bastard these days)

Well, I think being a cheap bastard is a whole lot better than being a dumb bastard, and we all know who falls into that category...

yes we all know who is cheap

hello everyone!  i am so glad all of you are here.

i am new to linux, but WOO HOO!

about xbill... man that is not exactly quake, it is naturally slow and jerky.

about ram... if yuo dig for it you can get 512 of sdram for less than 20 bucks on ebay... that's where all mine came from at prices from 8-12 bucks per 256, and 19.75 for a 512.  sure, they're evil, but ebay is a point where we can all expliot the mass suck culture microshaft's minions have introduced.

hey here's a wierd one:
randomly while runing tux racer, with the geforce 2, i bomb out hardcore to either the desktop or out of xwindows to a fresh login.

this is nothing compared to the errors windows gives me.  all my boards check out fine in other systems.

CALUM  RULES!!!!!!!!
