Title: Netscape Sux
Post by: Agent007 on 11 July 2002, 12:04
Hey all,

That browser is a realy memory hog, Opera is much much better. The pages displayed in Netscape look like type written sheets.....

I would like to express my disatisfaction with Netscape as well.  If there are any other web designers out there, I was wondering if your positioning tags and/or Style Sheets work on Netscape.  Mine don't.  They work on Mozilla v 1.0, Opera 6, Konqueror, and $hitternet Explorer. I am using Netscape version 4.79.  I just found this to be a bit odd.

Mozilla(Netscape) isnt perfect, but it is in my opinion a much better browser than Opera, and the single best substitute for Internet Explorer. Opera renders perfectly normal pages oddly, has javascript and dhtml supprt that seems half ass, has a large banner ad in the title bar, and although it claims to ident as something different, always idents as Opera.

mozilla is NOT netscape. mozilla is based on the netscape of four years ago, before netscape was bought by aol. Maybe they are the real reason for netscape's bloated shitness?

as i say, there's been a four year fork between netscape and mozilla (though until last year netscape did use mozilla code in it's browser, but not to any extent now i don't think).

Also, opera has a few features that mozilla should have incorporated a long time ago, which makes it the other major player in my opinion.

Mozilla kicks ass. Netscape sucks ass.
Mozilla needs to have a way to set its identification like Konqueror does.

How can anything owned by the Devil's corporation (AOL Time Warner) manage not to suck?

My preferences are Opera 6.x in windoze (when i have to use it) and Mozilla in Linux.

Yes it's a damn shame that the old King of web browser has fallen to a shameful life serving AOL Time Warner.  But the Prince of web broswers lives on in Mozilla!

Long live the Prince!  Long live the Prince!

it's not really a shame. after all, contrary to pouylar belief, if a major corporation wants to give you a lot of money for something you own, so they can turn it into an advertising heavy travesty of its former self, YOU CAN SAY NO!!!! Something that a lot of people do not realise...

Mozilla sucks because it doesn't support <BGSOUND> and can't center things properly. Proof (http://rrs.home7.dk3.com/links.htm)
Opera sucks because it doesn't support <MARQUEE>. Proof (http://www.redrangersoftware.ic24.net/rrs.htm)
Netscape 6 sucks because... well, just try right-clicking on the ModPlug Plug-In (http://www.modplug.com/). Proof (http://redrangersoftware.cjb.net/)

Any other Windows browsers I can try?

Well <marquee> was produced by M$ back at IE3, and <bgsound> is crap compared to <embed>. But I don't care really, you jsut carry on using IE because you are past hope the addiction is too strong.

I'm too lazy to do that, but i guess i dont really need to do that since i usually set everythin to identify as Mozilla anyway.

*Anyone* that includes stupid marquee shit in their site, has retarded bgsound that annoys the hell out of almost everyone, everytime, shouldn't even be allowed to touch a computer. It just makes your website even more annoying. Marquee usually distracts users from having their attention on the main content, and the sound usually messess up the music most people listen to while using a computer. Name three corporate websites that use those tags.

<marquee> & <bgsound> are both MS products and go against the standards set forth by www.w3c.org (http://www.w3c.org)  I would be upset if those browsers did support them.

Hi,
I've been reading a few of the discussion threads and one thing worries me. The idea behind UNIX, i.e. an open source, easily customised, powerful, easily upgradable OS, seems to have been forgotten. People seem more interested in "pretty" web-pages and "smooth" fonts. So what if you can't use <marquee> tags? The web is for sharing information and ideas not having flashing text and silly welcome sounds. If you don't like a browser crack open the source code and have a tinker with it, that's the whole point of open-source. It's not that difficult and it's suprisingly rewarding. I'm not looking for a slagging match here, I just want to make people have a think about why they use a UNIX OS in the first place...

Although I agree with your visions you are incorrect about the idea of "UNIX".  That is the idea of GNU/Linux and FreeBSD but almost all other UNIX OSs are not open source. In fact the FreeBSD license is so lax that it incourages the taking of it's code and turning it into proprietary software. Hell, M$ even rapes it. Originally the source code was licensed to various vendors (for a large fee) so that they could produce their own operating systems for the hardware that they designed and built. They did not redistribute their source code (and still do not).

Try and find the source for Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, IRIX, SCO, etc. You won't find it. The only two UNIX or UNIX Like operating systems that I am aware of are GNU/Linux and BSD (Apple's Darwin is also open source but it was derived from BSD). But I certainly hold the same feelings for the Internet and open source that you seem to hold.  That's why I like Linux and BSD so much.

What a shame that such a good browser (back in the 3.0 days) fell so far...

At least we have MOZILLA!  IT'S MOZILLA!  HOORAY MOZILLA!

Haha!  Classic!...

And to further on Swollen Red Ass Ranger Software's post:

Who fucking cares if a certain browser supports what tag?  A simple Javascript or a PHP line will take care of everything for you.  You do know what navigator.appName does, right?

Bob Im proving a point... AOL IS SHIT! I was contracted wit them for a short period of time and it seems to me that the Australian version sucks! Now contracted wiv iPrimus (http://www.iprimus.com.au), I feel that they are shit and I will be moving onto TPG or Norex at the end of the month (http://www.tpg.com.au | http://www.norex.com.au)... (http://www.norex.com.au)...) Ohh and one more thing, ENABLED HTML!!! What is the use of disabling it? So people cant use a href tags, but they can use URL tags?
