Title: Problems with Heatedebates.net
Post by: Laukev7 on 20 June 2006, 03:10
I tried to get two people to join, but both get a connexion timeout. And now, one of my regular posters can no longer access the forum (says he gets a 'server not found' error.

Anyone has an idea what the problem could be?

Getting the

Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at www.heatedebates.net (http://www.heatedebates.net).

error ...

I'm betting it's because it uses the illhostit DNS server ...

Registrar:     ONLINENIC, INC.

DNS Servers:   NS1.ILLHOSTIT.COM  NS2.ILLHOSTIT.COM

One easy way to bypass it is to use a cgi proxy or an anonymizer ... for example I can view heateddebates by going to www.anonymouse.org (http://www.anonymouse.org) and then using it to get to http://www.heateddebates.net

without proxy/anonymizer:

with proxy/anonymizer:

(http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/1359/withproxy8yw.th.jpg) (http://img150.imageshack.us/my.php?image=withproxy8yw.jpg)

Since the DNS is the problem, I'm sure there are other ways to fix it ... right ?

I think I'll have to get a new web host. I'm fucking sick of this.

There was another website a few days ago that I couldn't get to and everybody else could, but I can get to it now.
The DNS would resove alright but a traceroute showed that nothing was going past my ISP's computers. I have no idea why not, but it's working now - don't know why that is either.

Contact your ISP. Maybe they'll know something...

It's not my ISP, and I can't even contact the owner of the host directly. I have to do it through someone else.

I got a new host right now. However, I'm waiting for the old one to get back up so I can backup the data and send it to the other server.

You too Laukev? I am surprised you were still online this long.

It took my like 2 weeks to get my data, and even then, they were no fucking help at all.

Forum? Try 6 websites. 4 of which were clients of mine. All were dynamic and dependent on a database or 2.

Artformsdesign isn't in my control anymore. Sorta. I dont host it and dont have the ftp info any more.

I never had real control over hosting or ftp, until soon that is. Now I have my own hosting, thanks to etement's Dreamhost deal ($10 a year and a free .com domain name ain't bad at all).

Unfortunately, I'm unable to retrieve my heatedebates.com (now it's .net) unless I contact the address on the placeholder site, so I'm thinking about changing the name of the forum while I'm at it (just a possibility, maybe I could try to get the other name back). Also, I could start over right away and have a forum available, but so much material and discussions would be lost forever.

It would be a shame to lose all those discussions :(

I lost all of my forums and content when illhostit.com got "redone". There hasn't been a peep out of anybody about me getting the files back.

Illhostit used to be awesome.  But then when Stryker bought out, that place turned into shit.  They still have all my crap out there somewhere, too.
