Title: Dark cloud over good works of Gates Foundation

It's quite long, and I haven't read the whole thing carefully, but what it appears to be about is: The Gates Foundation invests some of its money in companies that cause some of the problems they are working to fix. Doh!

Like most philanthropies, the Gates Foundation gives away at least 5% of its worth every year, to avoid paying most taxes. In 2005, it granted nearly $1.4 billion. It awards grants mainly in support of global health initiatives, for efforts to improve public education in the United States, and for social welfare programs in the Pacific Northwest.

It invests the other 95% of its worth. This endowment is managed by Bill Gates Investments, which handles Gates' personal fortune. Monica Harrington, a senior policy officer at the foundation, said the investment managers had one goal: returns "that will allow for the continued funding of foundation programs and grant making." Bill and Melinda Gates require the managers to keep a highly diversified portfolio, but make no specific directives.

By comparing these investments with information from for-profit services that analyze corporate behavior for mutual funds, pension managers, government agencies and other foundations, The Times found that the Gates Foundation has holdings in many companies that have failed tests of social responsibility because of environmental lapses, employment discrimination, disregard for worker rights, or unethical practices.

That about sums it up

Your first red part is fairly typical, so I'll give that one to them.  The second red part is the important part.

ho hum.

people just *knowing* this will make very little difference. them *doing* something about it will. of course i suppose they can't do the latter without the former.

and anyway, printing it out is simply helping to fund the deforestation of the world to make way for mcdonalds to raise cheap steroid bred cattle, and for uncle ben to waste the world's water growing rice in equatorial regions.

See, there is a chain of events, the root of all evil is McDonalds.

TexMex's quoted text says everything.

Here's a few additions to the M is evil list. Wondering what mitigate means though. :)

1. Martyr
2. Mutilation
3. Mangulate
4. Manhandle

How are those?

mitigate means to moderate or to make milder

MS should give them free computers running free copies of Windows and MS Office and people will commend them for being charitable. Then when they can afford computers and they've been locked into using MS software MS can put the prices up and rake in the cash.

actually wasn't that the exact same plan as the free schools for computers thing? this happened in australia for sure, not sure if microsoft did it in other countries though.

by the way,

3. Mangulate

Thought I'd put that in 'cause it sounded like an M is evil word for the list. If that's not evil, well...
...we all make mistakes (oh no - i think that might be an M is evil word! lol). I'll replace it a bit later on. :)

Now I know what I shouldn't hand in. Of all the times I have handed my "Computers for Schools" vouchers in, I never realised I was falling for a scam! Run by MS! I hate dishonesty and deceit, and that's all these stoner morons are doing. To find out just how dishonest and selfish they are makes me despise them enough to wish they were out of business. What are they gonna do next? Battle to make it the law to use their software?

In TexMex's quoted text (wonder where he or she got it from), what caught my eye were the parts highlighted in red. I couldn't believe what I was reading. To think that workers were being treated in this way makes me feel sick.

I feel for whoever had to suffer at their hands.

Microsoft and the Gates foundation = selfish, uncaring fraudsters.
