Title: Calum's eBay Mac buying thread.

hello.
for my upcoming course i think i need this:
quote:

FirstClass Client Version 6.011

This is the version of the FirstClass client on the Online Applications CD-ROM, Version 3 and works correctly on Windows 2000. The documentation was written for this version. This version will work on Windows 95, 98, NT or 2000, and will also operate on Windows Me and XP.

There are two versions of this client you can download.

    * The client only, customised for use with The Open University servers
    * The client with a full set of Open University documentation, in PDF format, that will install with the client.
i will not, if i have anything to say about it, ever allow windows to connect to the internet again. but then i notice this:
quote:
FirstClass Client for Apple Macintosh

The Open University not not officially support the use of Mac's but the FirstClass client works almost identically across the platforms, therefore the documentation will be helpful for the Mac version.
If you would like to download the Mac OS version of the FirstClass client, then the most recent version can be located at Centrinity's software download page.

so.... i can either run a mac emulator in linux (looks like it's all beta stuff and will require a lot of downloading and tweaking stuff since i don't even have a macOS CD), or buy a second hand mac (which i have no money or space for). According to the site:
quote:

I dont know much about older macs since i've only been using one for about 8 months, but you can get processor upgrade cards at  http://www.powerlogix.com (http://www.powerlogix.com)

[edit]How much is your budget for a old/new mac?

Check this out (http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=pjguertin&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=25), this guy has four 233mhz g3s all of them are under $100 but all the auctions end in like an hour and a half.

You can't run OS 8.5 on a 68k-based Macintosh. You'll have to either pick up a PowerPC + 8.5+ or figure out how to get a 68030 to run 8.5 (which is probably one hell of a hack!)

Used Desktops & Laptops:
www.baucomcomputers.com (http://www.baucomcomputers.com) (reputable, never ordered from them)

Used Laptops:
www.wegenermedia.com (http://www.wegenermedia.com) (ordered from them, no problem)

All for now, be back soon

thanks for all the stuff guys! i appreciate it...
hmm, i was thinking about 50 pounds for a second hand mac, but if a quadra won't run 8.5, then i don't know really...
also, i don't know about paying for shipping from the states, i'd rather buy one in the UK...

ho hum, if i can get either a windows or a mac emulator to work in linux then i'll be set, but so far nothing, and i am loath to start yet another 'why won't wine work' thread...

thanks again guys...

Try checking
www.foxpop.co.uk (http://www.foxpop.co.uk)
or e-mailing the Editor (Elizabeth Liddell)

For info on used PDA/Laptop dealers in the UK.

Edit:
Yes, I write for them. Check out my PowerBook http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/pc/pda_01.htm (http://www.foxpop.ndirect.co.uk/pc/pda_01.htm)

of what?

as far as i can see, the required software runs in about 7 different versions of windows, and maybe 2 versions of macOS (of course only the windows versions are supported by the course).

There's no linux version of anything...

UNIX ain't trademarked, not really anyway. The point of my sig is that the only true UNIX is and was the origional one developed at bell labs (was it bell?) anyway, the origional from which all *NIX's came from. No current encarnation including BSD are actually true UNIX's.

So I thought it fitting to say that UNIX is more a state of mind than an OS. i.e. Open source, stability, all of those UNIX ideals that carry over to it's moddern variants.

Now that I have justified my sig. can you please get that stupidity off of yours.
