Title: electro-shitic capaciters
Post by: choasforages on 19 February 2003, 08:53
i lost another mb to capaceters, so once again ill have to go down to radioshack and pick up a new cap and play with the soldering iron. by any chance are their capaceters that don't leak? ive heard of tantulem/*sp?*/ but i hear they fail with a bang

It's "tantalum."  I have read that tantalum capacitors are better for motherboard applications, but I'm not sure why.

i can almost see that being the next big "mod", taking all the electroletics off and replacing them. and i have heard the same about tantalum caps. does anybody know why they would be better? and where i could buy some?/*radioshack has a few, but not the assortment i would need.*/

This was a big issue...it was on slashdot a while back. Go check them out, they have a long list of mobo and comp manufacturers that used bad resistors.

I think those caps dont leak as much (it would be impossible to have one not leak i think) and they last longer (i think).

I have never had cap problems on anything new however.

Tantalums have much lower internal inductance. This makes them better suited for use in high frequency circuits.

You might want to try Mouser Electronics (http://www.mouser.com).
