Who on earth would want to buy that piece of crap from Microsoft for the sole purpose of installing Linux on it???

By the way, this is NOT an effective way to make Microsoft lose mney.   ;)

XBox's are what, 200 bucks now?  That is really cheap.  Just link a bunch of them together into a "node" or whatever you linux people call it and you could have a pretty cheap, ultra wannabe supercomputer.

The thing I am exited about is being able to install the XBox Media Player without a mod chip... www.sourceforge.net/projects/xbplayer (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/xbplayer)

I wonder if the signed boot loader would allow me to isntall the Media Player.. ah who knows

It's "cluster"! Cluster! CLUSTER!

As in, "imagine a bewould cluster of those!".

You read Slashdot, don't you?

You can get computers at Walmart with Linux (Lindows or Mandrake) preinstalled for the same price, without giving a penny to Microsoft. I know they lose money for each X-Box they make, but why waste all that plastic?

i read an article in Consumer Reports saying that these computers sucked and that you should spend an extra hundred or 2 on a windows computer....i cancelled my subscription right there.

I never did like consumer reports.  Some things they were spot on, but some things they are just full of shit.

They may be crap for desktop computers, but we're talking about Beowulf clusters here. Besides, I doubt that the Xbox is any better than those machines, no matter how crappy they are.

however the xbox's lay flat and are stackable.  The ones from Walmart are proabably all covered with plastic, making them less stackable.

and MS loses money when you buy an XBox...
and then if you ever wanna player Halo, you have like 20 XBox's
and they are all black and cool looking
etc etc.

I don't think an XBOX  would make a good beowulf cluster.  From what I understand, you need high speed ethernet cards to make such a beast practical, otherwise the networking bottlnecks the system.

dumbasses, microsoft loses even more money if the xbox's never sell, but if you buy one, you partially cover the cost's meaning microsoft doesn't lose as much as if you didn't buy the damned thing

I'm confused... you go to this link and it tells u the exploit is at this link:
http://lists.netsys.com/pipermail/full-disclosure/2003-July/010895.html (http://lists.netsys.com/pipermail/full-disclosure/2003-July/010895.html)

then u go there and it tells u nothing.... Fuck I want this exploit.  I am just hoping that the XBMP is changed to use this exploit.  I don't wanna modify my hardware.

I bet the XBox is at least 3 times what those walmart special Linux computers are. The XBox uses a 733mhz Intel(I think PIII) CPU. A NVidia GFX chipset and a modern PIII chipset that runs in at least ATA66(maybe ATA100).

Those Walmart specials run on a shitty, outdated ATA33 only chipset. If I remember correctly, they use a Via C3 CPU(a 1ghz C3 is slower than a 500mhz Celeron PPGA/Pentium 2 core) and the video card is not anywhere near the performance of a GeForce 3+(like the XBox's NVidia card).

If it were my desicion I'd go for the XBox.

Fair enough for the processor, but I doubt the graphic card is much of an issue when it comes to clusters.

Good point.

but hey, just think... you got a cluster going, and you wanna bust out with some DOA3 (the real game, not cheesy X-TREME VOLLEYBALL) or some STAR WARS you can fire it up.

see, that's why the Ecks Baachs is decent, because it has a STAR WARS GAME.

Even MS can't keep dudes from STAR WARS

consoles are for...CHEAP gamers.  i'm cheap, don't have money to spend on a computer to run games.  most of the good games require windows anyway.  if there is a way to play windows games on linux i don't know.  macs have a lot of games now too, but who has the money to buy a mac?  i sure don't.  i got an xbox at the base exchange for $189 with two controllers and two games.  now you can't tell me that's worse than paying a grand or more for a windows running computer with enough hardware to run the same games that an xbox does for only about 200 bucks.  its a compromise.  i still hate microsoft, but i still gotta play games.

i rant on, still ignorant.  all i know is what i know; don't hate me, help me.

This is old news.  I would probably go out and by a used xbox just to put linux on it.

Wow, don't you think that would really qualify me as a super geek ?

Post by: hm_murdock on 14 September 2003, 18:02
it's okay 'cos you could play STAR WARS

Well, you have to buy the kit from Sony (which has a hard drive, fancy-man VGA cables and a whole pile of other crap) and then put up with their obtuse restrictions on the use of your own hardware (no use of the CD/DVD drive, etc.). The only thing that would make it up to me is that you can get the manuals for all of the gadgets inside the PS2's graphics chip, albeit in PDF form on a CD that the PS2 can't even read.  ;)  Other than that, it's a $400 128-bit PC running Linux (and not very quickly, either).

Hopefully that will change now that somebody got Gentoo working on it.
