Title: Microsoft buys Rare.
Post by: PlumClock on 14 September 2002, 06:53
Looks like that fucking Xbox is on the way to success. Once again Microsoft uses rolls of money to beat the competetion. Rare was a second party developer for Nintendo, one of the best game developers in the history of the industry.

Now the 10 year Nintendo and Rare union is crushed and some of my favorite games are going to Microsoft.

It's sad enough seeing a dedicated gaming company like Nintendo being crushed by this monster. The saddest thing is now I have to buy an Xbox.   :(

I hope they still plan on releasing whatever they had left in development for the cube.

Bastards! They must be stopped!
They just gobbled up one of the greatest console game companies...I guess it was just a matter of time before M$ started using it's wallet to push around the gaming industry.

Wait...if they have a lot of the PC gaming industry, and are now fucking with the console industry, how will we play games? I hope Sony has a huge war chest!  (http://tongue.gif)

Horrid! How much did they pay for rare? What if MS started buying one too many companies and getting dangerously low finances? Could that happen?

Im pretty sure they do, by no means is sony scared of the xbox.  If you take a look at the numbers ps2 is kicking xbox's ass in sales and the number of game titles.  If xbox live fails I think the whole thing will come tumbling down on them.  Bottom line, its got ok graphics but you can have all the graphics in the world but with no good games you have nothing.

to me the buying of Rare just means that Microsoft thinks they can buy their way to the top. its sad that microsft can't be inovative they just buy...they bought Rare for almost 400 million!!

Why should they change now? Microsoft doesn't have an ounce of innovation in them and never have.

Now I know that you're all going to yell and scream. As an xbox owner, I dont feel that the Rare move is bad and ANY corporate company could buy the companies they wish to. Hardware is one of the best examples of this and even the companies you love and trust will do this. It's not cheating, it's not being anything except smart. Any company will tell you this. Any company, if it could, would gladly buy out it's competition.

But you see buying out the competition as a good thing?  What happens when there is no competition left to buy out?  Then you have what is called a monopoly.  That's how they became a monopoly in another market.  No competition in the market place is extremely bad for the consumer.

Let's say Microsoft buys out all the competition in the console game market. No more Playstation, no more Nintendo. And let's say they also buy all the game software companies. What do you think will happen to your cute little Xbox?  The price will immediately sky rocket and there will be no incentive for the hardware and software to get any better.

Microsoft bought their way to the top in another market and the true evil is now showing more than ever before. Wait till it happens in the Game market. I think you should be hoping that it doesn't (unless you work for Microsoft).

skyrocket in price. i think not. there are laws to prevent such things from happening. and it is impossible to buy out all competition. and thats the way life goes and the world the world spins... on money.

evil. thats a harsh word to apply to anything. and it all depends on your definition of evil. they arent trying to murder other people.

And where has Microsoft been lately? That's right, in trouble with the law. Here is an example of their price hikes due to their monopoly in the other market:

And based on your writing style I have come to the conclusion that you are a high level Microsoft manager:

Void has a good point.  Remember the price drop for the xbox? It was 299 and was dropped to 199.  Thats a little something called competition.  If microsoft had a monopoly, what incentive would there be to drop prices?  In the end you, the consumer, are getting a better deal, and when the ps3 and gc2 comes around, microsoft will be forced to outdue them.

Again, thats what we call competition.  Even if they don't raise the price to incredible levels, they will, instead, make the hardware inferior and keep their price set.  As much as I like the gba, I feel like Nintendo hasn't had to really bump up much from the gb systems, because theres virtually no reason to.  Slap a fresh coat of paint on, add a few more graphix, add 2 freaking buttons more, and viola!

As for monopolizing the Video game market, Microsoft seems very eager to do that.  How many companys did Sony buy out in their first year of production on the ps1?  Microsoft has a ton of developers working on their machine, AND they had previously tried to buy out sega, nintendo, and square.

Sorry, but I have had a lot of rage towards Microsoft for a long time.  They are by far the most evil company on the face of this planet.  They dominate by buying out and forcing others out of the market, or by threatening distributers.

Why would anyone want to allow them to step in and stagnate the game industry like their OS market?  Its called ignorance.  In a few years there will be millions more creating more "fuckmicrosoft" dot coms, after they singlehandedly bomb gaming.

I feel sorry and saddened to anyone who picks up that crappy product.  May you burn in hell  (http://smile.gif) .

Today there was a good example of government blocking a buyout so as not to create a monopoly and to keep competition in the market. The FCC refused the Dish buyout of DirectTV:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,65350,00.html (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,65350,00.html)

But Powell said the benefits claimed by the companies were not borne out and instead competition would be harmed, prices would rise and future innovation would be hampered. If the nation's two biggest pay satellite television operators merged, the combined company would have about 18.2 million subscribers.

Sound familiar?

Since Microsoft is already a monopoly in one market I would like to see them banned from buyouts in any other market they are involved in and be prevented from any bullying tactics. I know it doesn't work that way but it should. At least they would have to break up into more than one company on their own if they wanted to pursue game developer buyouts.
