OUT OF CONTEXT: WINDOWS THE LOW-MANPOWER CHAMP?
"Linux requires more care and feeding [than Windows 2000], basically. That's what the results [of a Microsoft-commissioned study] are really telling us. The amount of manpower required to run a particular [Linux] environment is going to be higher."
-- Al Gillen, research director for IDC's System Software group, as
quoted by ComputerWorld

Ahh don't worry about it. This report is sponsored by M$, so it's already questionable, an internal M$ memorandum (halloween VII) already said that TCO was in favour of Linux. And the report also shows that under M$ backed report it is still only just a lower TCO and this is the only scenario where M$ come out on top.
And yes there is a wage descepancy between *nix qualified and M$, because any dumb shit can run windows - which is implied in the report, and the fact that there is already a M$ knowledge because of how long it's been around. That report will backfire - they have just devalued evey M$ qualification in existance and every worker who uses M$. If I worked solely with M$ I would be very pissed at this report essentially calling me dumb.

Here (http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,107517,00.asp) is the article (notice that it's written in ASP).
However, I find the article bloated because:
- The article didn't mention any particular distribution.
- The research has been done more than a year ago, but with distro's like Red Hat, Lycoris, SuSE, Mandrake etc. Linux has become much easyer.
- Windows has become more expencive than ever before.
-
I thought PCWorld was Gates' bitch anyway.
-
Just curious, are all those computer magazines Windows bitches, or do some simply follow Windows alot because so many computers use Windows?
-
Yes they are windows bitches!!! The people writing for those magazines don't know shit! Most, if not all of their articles are just advertising for their sponsors. All they ever say is, "Hey, this new gadget/windows software is cool!".
It's laughable! Whenever they have one of those "Best Power User PC" articles, they NEVER build one from scratch! They always pick from the major mail order dealers. Ha! cuz they write for windows retards!
nuff said!

Dammit, they ripped me off with that free PC Magazine subscription. (http://smile.gif)

I'm starting to worry that Microsoft is going to bring out some top-secret weapon that will kick Linux's ass one of these days. If Microsoft goes down, its not going to go quietly and it's sure as hell not going down alone.
-
That top secret weapon? Making Windows very good, while still maintaining their dumbass MS policies. Problem is, MS seems like a company that is blinded by arrogance/ignorance. Although MS intends to have Windows be problematic, im sure they could really jack up the quality if they gave the order.
-
if they did they would lose money obn future 'upgrades'. Also, it would require a complete restructuring of their command structure. That would be costly and time consuming (and could cost them their place in the market as a result).
Also, microsoft never use a constructive solution if a destructive one will do.

Here in the Netherlands, there is one computer magazine that isn't run by a commercial company, but by an orginization called ,,HCC". There magazine ,,Computer Totaal" provides objective information and articles. It's run by fans of all kinds of operating systems, mainly Windows, Linux, OS/2 Warp, etc. fans, but most of the Windows fans are mainly old people who got a cheap computer with Windows XP pre-installed, that they got from their (ex-)company.
And of course, there is the good old ,,Linux magazine" (http://smile.gif)

Bah, i'm installing BeOS instead then!
