RedHat has sued SCO to clear up the copyright infringement question/threat. They have also set up a legal fund for open source software.

Yeah! Go RH!
People often say they've become the M$ of Linux, but that doesn't seem to be true since they've set up that fund.
-
Damn straight, Redhat! Good to hear!
P.S. nah, LindowsOS has become the MS of Linux ;)
-
Go RH! I hope they drag M$ down with them.

Yeah, you got that right. But some people say that about RH, but it doesn't seem like it to me; they're still really a part of the open source community, unlike Lindows.

I found this gem in forbes' coverage of this announcement.

Linux geeks howled a bit, but then wrote off SCO as a bunch of sleazebags and went back to playing live-action roleplaying (LARP) games in their mothers' basements, or whatever it is they do when they're not writing device drivers and complaining about clueless end users.
aren't news articles suppposed to be objective? (unless you are slashdot :D )

SCO's response

I still don't trust them.....I still think $CO are lying. Still think there in cahoots with M$.
Interestingly most developers and Dev studios seem to be ignoring $CO, with only an estimated 12% dropping Linux development as a result of $CO action.

SCO's latest response:
Pay $700 to use Linux (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030805/latu094_1.html)
Oh and you better not work with the Linux source code either or your licence is revoked.
And according to Slashdot (http://slashdot.org/articles/03/08/05/1721238.shtml?tid=106&tid=185&tid=187&tid=88&tid=98&tid=99)
the price will DOUBLE after October 15.
Here is a direct quote from McBride to RedHat.
"I must say that your decision to file legal action does not seem conducive to the long-term survivability of Linux."

I think I speak for everyone when I'm saying
Oooooh, I'm shaking!.......fuck off.

Heh, reminds me of a school yard fight.
"Ooh, I'm shaking."
"My lawyer could beat your lawyer!"
"I'm gunna sue you for a bajillion dollars!"

And SuSe joins in (http://www.suse.com/us/company/press/press_releases/archive03/sco_redhat.html).

SuSE Damn it! :D
-
Whoops, don't know how I didn't notice that. SuSE joins in.
-
Wow - my respect for Red Hat has gone up and I may actually like Suse now... One good thing about SCO, they're helping us see who has balls in Free Software land. Except Debian. Debian doesn't have to contribute because they have no money. ;)
-
SuSE too? Wow, this is really escalating. Well, on one side it is :D Oh, and you'd be proud, suselinux, I downloaded and ran a "live-eval" version of SuSE... I gotta say I was very impressed, I think I'll try the real thing sometime in the near future. I hope it comes with the tools and things redhat has, though, I'll have to look into that... I'm really starting to like those...

You'll find SuSE carries alot more stuff than REDHAT because its a commercial distro it comes with some non GPL stuff. including MP3 capability :D
lots of video editing stuff and so on

I think Mandrake is right up there with SuSE, so if you don't want to buy SuSE download mandrake 9.1
Red Hat say they are a user friendly Distro, but I don't think they are.

Ah, I see! Thanks. I ordered some CD's from TuxCDs.com, Knoppix and Redhat (or XXX XXX, hahaha) but the redhat one doesn't work :( I think I'll try downloading another distro until I get that figured out, but can't I download SuSE as well as Mandrake? (I'm apparently downloading a CD image to install SuSE right now, although I guess I could be missing something :D )

SCO says that they will not sue Linux Companies

I can't open that particular URL but I read another one on slashdot. I belive SCO's words were that they had no concrete plans to sue linux companies.
Which of course means nothing. SCO says one thing and does a 180 later.
