man, we should organize a protest and show up at the court hearing. This shit is low, see if I ever buy a cd again.

jesus christ, the girl is 12! leave her alone, and take your lawsuits someplace else. on top of this, they are also suing a 70 year old man. his grandchildren probably downloadd some songs into a shared folder, and now grandpa is going to pay. It is getting out of hand. I am all for a boycott & protest. I would like to see the riaa crumble and fall. no more big labels would be nice. more "artists" and less pretty faces would be better.
-
I'll do a quick look for GPL / Open Music License artists. So far all I know of is Magic Mushrooms (death metal, they have an (shudder) mp3 on the knoppix iso...) and Twisted Helices. (Their lead is the guy who wrote the Open Music License.
-
There are quite a few "mainstream" bands out there that do not care about people downloading their music. In fact, they put it on their sites. Most artists make their money off of touring anyways.
-
To be fair it's no worse than them attacking anyone else. Unjustly suing kids is no worse than unjustly suing adults.

yeah. they shouldn't be suing anyone. but to fuck with a 12 year old girl who thought what she was doing was okay? sorry, but that is going too far.

when do we start the fund for a hitman to take out Sherman?

I'm sure there are some who would do it for free.

finally the good ole RIAA is going after the real criminals, lock her up and throw away the key!
-
For their defence, I doubt they really knew that they would be suing a 12 year old girl. It's not that they actually intend to sue children; they probably only got the address from their ISP and filed a lawsuit, without really knowing whom they were addressing to. Face it, I don't like the RIAA very much, but even the most unethical corporation would know better than suing a child and risking a public relation disaster.
-
12, are they pedophiles?
When they are targetting 12yo girls they have gone too far.
-
They settled for $2000.

well well, welcome to America, where the RIAA has police power and we've got the worst president since the depression.
WOW I LIKE THIS PLACE MORE EVERY DAY

It's not that bad, it'll all blow over soon
SCO will go bankrupt
The RIAA will raise the tariffs on CDR's and go away to hide in hole
Bush will be voted out for Colon Powell :D , That would be COOL!
Linux will grow and take over the world, with OSX by its side......BSD can come too
and all will be good, just goto sleep for the next three years.....

if I go to sleep I'll miss the revolution though! I wanna be there for the final battles of the platform wars!

I think there needs to be an even stronger movement to boycott the RIAA. I'd like to see it be a big enough movement to really cut into their sales hard and reduce their profits to ziltch. Make it so they can no longer afford their Nazi-Lawyers and sue the pants off of innocent people.

He has a point, to us a 12 year old has "cute factor" but they have ruined the lives of lots of people before this. To be honest I'm sick of rich fucks like RIAA and the like trying to take away my freedoms. Why not just not buy into their tainted crap? There have got to be alternatives out there who want their fans to have their rights.
Still looking of course... haven't managed to find a big repository of Free music yet but I'm sure I'll find one. And I'm pretty sure mp3.com doesn't count.
edit1:
openmusic.linuxtag.org describes the actual license. There are three levels, green, yellow and red in order of most free to least free.
edit2:
woo hoo, pay dirt:

still looking for more as well as information on which of the groups I listen to are for / against my freedoms...

Also someone might like to tell Calum...
Does anyone remember the link to his music collection? I heard he took a lot of it down a while back. :-(

Ah crap, looks like I'm not a Nine Inch Nails / Marilyn Manson fan anymore. Fuck you Trent Reznor you hypocritical scum bag! Pretty accurate now considering he acts like all the other stars he supposedly hates. And I just bought the new MM album too. :(
Woo, you rebel Trent, go sue those fans.
edit:
Also amusingly he was inspired by Skinny Puppy (good band btw) - who made a lot of songs which cant be released because they infringe on a few horror movies intellectual "property."

what about when she wants to get into some school and they see this lawsuit from a huge company against her, they've fucked her before she could do much of anything.
