I got the Powermac G4 today and it is really sweet - the best computer I own.

System Specs
PowerPC G4 500MHz
1.25gig of RAM
80gig Seagate Baracuda IV drive
DVD-RAM drive (CD-ROM/DVD-ROM/DVD-RAM)
Internal Zip drive
ATI Radeon 32mb (faster than GF2MX)
OS X 10.2 with lots of apps
Nice white/blue case

It is realy good and I am happy that I got it.

the machine cost me nothing  (http://smile.gif)  and the specs are above.

I have lots of software for it (mostly graphics) that include but are not limited to:
Maya 3.5.1
Adobe Illustrator 10
Adobe Photoshop 7
Adobe After Affects 5.5
Final Cut Pro
Bryce 5
Painter 7
Flash MX
Dreamweaver MX
Fireworks MX
Lightwave 7.0
Toast Titanium 5.1.4
Return to castle Wolfenstein

Those are the things that were included with the system when I got it off a friend of my dad.

Ugh... macs are horrible. Nice OS, but POS hardware... why not just wait for Apple's Jaguar OS and get a real computer?

Yes. Mac hardware is great.

Post by: Chooco on 16 September 2002, 12:47
i agree, Mac Hardware costs lots because it is specialy designed for a mac. it's like Sparc processors on a Solaris machine...the processor and OS were specificaly made for each other.

Jaguar  IS the operating system I am running aka OS X 10.2 which is codename Jaguar. Check out www.apple.com (http://www.apple.com) to find out. Apple is only going to make MacOS X for Macintosh computers.

I must admit, I am quite a dickwad. I can't help but think "What are these guys doing here?!" whenever macs are mentioned in a postive way on these forums. Hey I know they must rock, they are definitly better then MS. It's just I still have this image in my head of MAC OS users and PC users battling it out as usual, except the Wind0ze users are replaced by Linux users.  (http://smile.gif)

Totally anti-community spirit, but im a dickwad.  (http://tongue.gif)

the thing is that if there is ANY pc vs mac rivalry on this site, it is entirely created by one or two of the more militant mac users.

i hasten to add that mac users are just as open and friendly as linux users, and both tend to be a bit more so than bsd users...

what's the problem? the webmaster uses macs...

there's a whole mac forum on here for gods' sake!

Yes, Yes the webmaster knows whats up, macs rule!  But I hate the mac vs x86 battle, really who cares let everyone use what they like.  And smokey mcp0t/b0b  to take a screen shot press apple+shift+3 at the same time.  A .pdf file should show up on your desktop a few seconds later [if its 10.2, 10.1.x its a .tif or something].  Also I dunno if you know, but you can open it in Preview and export it as a jpeg, BMP, photoshop or whatever you like.

HAHAH!

You know, you can use Mozilla for OSX which is totaly freaking awsome!

It's the best browser on OSX IMHO.

Also, look inside your Applications->utilities, you should see a little App, called GRAB. You can do alsort's of screen shot things that Apple+Shift+3 don't do.

The cool thing about the machine you got is that it is totaly upgradable, you can turn that into a Gigahert, G4 if you wanted to! Kudos! Hell of a machine, glad you like it  (http://smile.gif)

And Cencored, get a clue.

Also, Militant PC users *cough* Zombie9467865454 *cough*, *cough* Goosebunny *cough, *cough* XP Luser *cough*, have started many flame threads as well as Macman, I, and other Mac psychoes  :D  (granted, some more psycho than others)

hmm, i used to wish for a macintosh, learned my leason, i wish for a macintosh that supports networking without hassle/*hunting for a pcmcia card doesnn't count*/, and has an easy and cheap way of doing that. also it must be atleast 604, or g4, no 603's or g3's

Yikes! Beautfiul Linux desktop too! But why have IE shortcut on your taskbar thingy?! That's too disrespectful.  ;)

Heh you wish you had a good mac? I wish I had a distro that would work with my ADSL modem.  :(

with a mac you are not forced into having msnmsg and iexplode, so why have them?

unfortunately i failed to find a replacement for msn chat on the macintosh, however mozilla and opera BOTH kick the behind of internet exploder on the mac. (mozilla is better since the newest mac version of opera is getting a bit long in the tooth now)

nice desktops by the way, yes i tend to like the look of GNOME more than KDE when i see screenshots, pity GNOME won't work on my machine... i hope you guys are posting these in the 'Look! enormous images!' thread or whatever it is...  ;)

Use Proteus, it can connect to m$n, yahoo, icq and aol.  It works ok, you can download it from the apple site.

I put the IE icon as a joke.  I'd never use IE.

Personally i like the OS, but i'd still load on Linux. The hardware is the best because unlike a PC... a mac is more standardized, for example... Im on my "family" pc because mine is in 880 thousand peices because im doing some case mods. But here we go.... The mb is gateway, the CPU intel, he printer HP, and i think you get my drift. Macs are more stable then PC's....

Actually i was watching the news and it said that Computers are the most unreliable appliances in the home. But that macs where the worst but they are refering too PC's as Windows and i think that Linux is better then Mac OS because its open source and that helps me.

Darwin is open source.

Post by: Calum on 18 September 2002, 19:14
good point, but is it free software and GPL or BSD licenced?

this is the problem with the obfuscation of the term 'open source'.
Title: hi from me using a mac :)

I think darwin is free, at least the kernel and some BSD parts.  When you buy os x your pretty much paying for the Agua GUI.  You can get some of the source code here:

http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/darwin/ (http://developer.apple.com/darwin/projects/darwin/)

[EDIT]You can read their license [Apple Public Source License (APSL)] here:

Hell no, that's Red Hat Linux 8.

I'm using wine/winex (winex for games and wine for everything else)  I have .exe files associated with wine; it's really slick.  I can launch any win32 program by double clicking on it.  And the IE icon is purely a joke (although I do have an IE skin for mozilla that makes it look identical to IE)
