That's basically what I feel. Right now I have a Dell Inspiron with Windows XP Home Edition, which doubly sucks. Macs are great, and Apple makes some of the best computers anywhere, but they're too damn expensive, you know? The most affordable of them is most likely the eMac, but I like laptops; my ideal Mac is a 15'' PowerBook G4. That would be really sweet. Anyway, I wonder if Apple will ever release iPhoto for the PC anytime in the future (they did with iTunes, which was a mixed bag; it's good, but not as good as the Mac counterpart, of course).
-
This should go in the Mac Forum.
And yes, Macs are too expensive for a lot of people. :( You could try for a used one, I don't know how good those are myself.

Glad to see a pc user actually realising that macs are better than pcs!!
Maybe there is hope for the rest of them!
Regarding iphoto coming to the pc - I dont think this will ever happen as iphoto is just one component of the 'digital hub' that includes: imovie, idvd, itunes, iphoto, garageband, isync and ,mac and that is totally uniquely designed for the mac's ease of use and intuitivity.
All these apps are designed to work seemlessly together - e.g. - you can use iphoto to export stills into imovie, and itunes songs too which inturn can export movies into idvd and you can then export your finished movie to quicktime etc...
The problem is even if apple did make pc versions of the digital hub will never work as well because the unique point with apple (and apple are the ONLY company in the world that can do this) is that the hardware is designed specifically to work seemlessly and connect with the software and not a patchwork of hundreds of maunfactuerers vying for some sort of continuity that is typical of the windows experience.
And that is just the start...
If only the majority of pc users knew what they were missing!! You guys would all leave windows in minutes!
I feel very priviledged to own 2 macs and that I use macs at work and I personally see this anology: if the was a world war the pc users would be the mass army that would bascially be the 'cannon fodder' for the nukes, bombs etc and the mac/unix users would be the elite special forces that perform the missions that actually win the war.
The mac is has a great OS to use, OS X Panther is the most easy to use and intuitive experience and it NEVER crashes, has NO VIRUSIS - so simple, everything works together - for example: you put a blank cd in the mac and it automatically launches the software to write it or you plug in your digital camera and it automatically launches iphoto to download the pics - Bloody amazing!
I have never had that experience with windows.
If you are seriously considering buying a mac - then the emac is a good starting point or save up for that powerbook - I can guarantee once you get the mac you want you will never touch windows again - and you will probably say to your self 'why didn't i do this years ago!'
Good luck - if you need any help you can email me - [email protected].

Count me amongst the ones who want to ditch their PeeCee for a Mac. I'm hoping to get one this summer, if I work hard enough,

Actually, solarflare, I left windows nearly three years ago. (http://tongue.gif) I run Linux. :D
PC != Win-Doesn't

I have had a Mac ever since my Dad bought the first one in 1984. I have never owned a single PeeCee and i currently use 3 Macs! Muhuhahahahahah!!
And I do agree that they should cut their prices..
Then those Windows fools will finally learn........

If you want a Mac, sell your PC and get one. The G4 towers aint that expensive.

aint aint a word. G4's are cheep now, but who wants a G4 when there are G5's now!

I wouldn't want to ditch my PC for anything
-
Because G5s are hell expensive  My G4 tower runs Illustrator and Photoshop fine, and Panther is very responsive. I like Safari as well!
-
uh... I do not care much for safari. I always use firefox.
-
Careful with the PC bashing, there are Linux users among us. I learned that the hard way.

I wouldn't give up my PC either. :(
-
Sure you would. You just don't know it yet.
The cat said she'd tear up your peecee.
Then, you'll realize that OS X really is badass and the One True STEP, and you, too will finally STEP in Time.
-
I dont know why you guys talk about "giving up" computers becuase I never do. I just get new ones and the all just kind of pile up. I like havling lots of old computers (http://tongue.gif)
-
I'd be the same way, but when I got my iMac, it was decided for me that I was not "allowed" to have five operational computers.
Thanks dad.
So my K6-2 550 was stripped down and partsed out at a garage sale.
I got the HD.
Yay.
-
I will never get rid of my computers, never! Unless, I guess if someone ofered me a lot of money for one, but that would never happen.

Yeah, but I wish I could try it out on the hardware I have.. I'm the same way, I'd never sell a PC though. I want to buy a mac sometime, after I build my next computer.

get your grubby mits on OPENSTEP 4.2 or Rhapsody DR2. That's about as close as you'll come to OS X on x86!

How about Apple OpenDarwin (http://developer.apple.com/darwin/)?
-
How about no?
No. No! NO!
Why is it so hard for people to realize that the software components that make it "Mac OS X" are not part of Darwin.
With Darwin, you get a Mach-powered BSD-like UNIX. That's it. It's NOTHING LIKE OS X.
Rhapsody is. Rhapsody DR2 looks nearly identical to Mac OS X Server 1.x, which then evolved into Mac OS X. It looks much like OS 8.5.
OPENSTEP is less like OS X, but not by much. You'll still see where parts of it directly evolved into OS X.
If you get Darwin, you'll be sorely disappointed when you find yourself simply staring at BASH.
Get Rhapsody DR2 or OPENSTEP. Do it. You'll thank yourself. You'll suddenly realize what's been missing from your computer using experience.

ARE U CRAZY??
So you love your pc so much that you will always tolerate endless virusis and infected emails, endless security updates due to the crap patchwork programming of the OS and using an operating system that is released to customers in a beta version by a company that has global monopoly and treats all its customers as gullible mugs!
Don't U think you deserve better than this????
I recommend you looking in the yellow pages under the heading 'Phychiatrists'!! - U obviously need your head examined!!!
-
Ok solarflare: Learn something...
PC = Windows <WRONG
A PC doesn't have to run Windows, it can run Linux and other good OSs.
And Jimmy - Rhapsody DR2, where can I get that?
-
That's a damn good question. I'm still trying to get it. I think I know a source. I'll find out.
-
BTW... this is Rhapsody DR2
(http://toastytech.com/guis/rhapmovie.png)
This is Darwin
(http://jimmyjames.sytes.net/media/darwino.jpg)
-
wow rhapsody is about identical to system 9
-
On the surface. It doesn't take long, though, to start seeing the differences.
Finder isn't there. Instead, it's Workspace Manager. WSManager is pulled mostly unchanged from OPENSTEP. It behaves and looks nearly identically. It's not the same as the Finder in Mac OS X, which at least kinda acts like OS 9.
-
so... it looks like os8/9 but is similar to OSX behind the scenes?
-

Yeah I've seen that before...it was lookin' pretty good at that point.
Supposedly Rhapsody/x86 had poor hardware support or something. But I bet it could've been just fine when fully released...I'm still convinced that Apple won't port it for purely financial reasons. :(
-
I'd like to get my hands on that.
Nice!
-
quote:

It is Mac OS X. The evolution:
NeXTSTEP > OPENSTEP > Rhapsody > Mac OS X Server 1.0 > Mac OS X "Client"
There's very little separation between Rhapsody and OS X. The main event that signals the end of OPENSTEP/Rhapsody and the beginning of OS X was Carbon.

You could get a factory refurbished model, which is actually a great bargain. Lots of Apple resellers have these.

Your problem is your OS.
Use GNU/Linux.

WTF
I thought we went over this already!
I don't seem to see a word of anti-Linux propaganda in that thread.
You know what? I like Mercedes-Benz and Honda automobiles. Does that statement mean that I say that Buick sucks shit and that Lincoln makes turds? No. It means I like these things.
I think you may have something wired incorrectly, good sir.
Either that, or it's a joke. I won't rule that out. :-p

Way to go, dickhead. That's how you get switchers. You tell them that their OS is a "problem" and give them an edict to use what you like.
Yeah, that goes over really well.

STEP Into The Future, sucka.
What is it with some of you guys? This is really getting old. The anti-non-Linux sentiment that's growing of late is dangerous. It threatens to destroy this community. You guys always bitch about how much you hate MS, but then someone will come and say some bullshit like this.
And all it is... is flamebait. It's said, and then someone replies at all, and that person is "anti OSS".
Well, I've got a message for all you faggots.
Fuck off. Nobody said a damn thing about Linux except Insomnia who came a-trollin'.
I got an idea... how about you piss off, insomnia?
Yes. I like that idea.

Exactly, I agree with everything you said. We should concentrate on getting rid of microsoft before we start bickeing amongst ourselves over what's supposedly "better". And insomnia, stop trolling.
-
I thought of something else. Komodo and GenSTEP are going to be The Best. It will be impossible for you to refute this. You simply cannot. You'll see, and then... YOU TOO WILL UNDERSTAND.
The STEP is My Friend. Make it Your Friend, Too.

Hey Jimmy, you're truly a brainless prick.
Than again, ...
That's what I like about you.
You seek programmers?
If I find some time, I might actually help you.
I like GNUstep.
If you think you can base full OS on it, that whould be very nice.
Jens.

I wouldn't have it any other way! :D

1st of all , okay maybe the PowerMac G5 is expensive . But what is a G5 ?
Seems it's Apple's Itanium , What about the costs of a Itanium with WindozeXP64 (jaks)
Apple is selling G5 iMacs too it's user's now , for what you get they even don't cost too much . So Mac home user's are getting their Itaniums now ( okay some Mac .. )
Where are the Itanium home Users , wait till 2006 to find them cause you wont find to many now .
2nd , What is Mac OS X Server 1.x ( aka Rhapsody )
Apple wanted to port OpenStep ( NeXT ) to the Mac & also PC mainly because using Yellowbox made it easy to port your code both to PowerPC & x86 ( & any other platform too ) . But there where 2 major problems , all older Mac applications had to be completely rewritten ( this was not what Mac developers wanted at that time & it would make Mac OS X applications be released too late because of the process of rewriting them ) , also Micro$luts owns a pretty big amount of Apple , they saw OS X x86 as an attack on Windoze ( and you all know what Micro$luts do to his opponents ) . So Yellowbox became Cocoa ( with less platform portibility & more old Mac Os compatibility . That compatibility was provided trough Carbon & Carbon also provided the Classic environement which was a far better aproach then the MasOS.app aproach ( MacOS.app made run Mac OS full screen on it's own in front of Mac Os X , Classic makes it run as a part of OS X ) All this was done somewhere between the OS X Developers Previews ( DP 1 was a non server Rhapsody , DP 4 introdused Aqua , the new gui , i can't tell where carbon & classic apeared , DP 4 had all of it though while DP 1 had none )
Personally i had rather seen the original Mac gui survided , maybe with Aqua as prefered second gui in a form of Desktop theme's . But that's my personal opinion & i must also admitt that i'm comfortaly using Aqua right now .
I'dd still like to get me a copy of Mac Os X Server 1.2 for my older Mac though ( & the DP's too as i don't really need the Server OS ) . This older Mac is also capable of running the latest OS X ( Panther ) thanx to XPostFacto & with a G3 300 it runs Panther comfortly .
I hope my message was explaining the open questions in this thread .

Welcome to the boards, maccampus! (http://smile.gif)
Just want to clarify one thing, though: no part of Apple has ever been owned by Microsoft. What you are referring to is the purchase of 150,000 shares of non-voting stock, which would even then still have been a small percentage of Apple's ownership.

I agree. I wish they did it sorta like winxp, where you can switch back to the old mac os look. OS 10.3 is a little too much for my old imac G3 400 to handle. (lets admit it, osx, winxp, and kde3.x are ALL bloated)

Mac's may seem expensive, but they are worth every cent, and what about the new Mac Mini, they are very affordable, starting at just US$499.
Just think, once you have a Mac, you will never have to pay for security software, it is available, but you don't need it. A Macs security will never compare to the swiss cheese that is windows.
Go ahead and sell your PC to buy a mac, trust me, you will not regret it one bit.
Plus there's the added bonus of how attractive a mac will look in your home office!!!! (http://tongue.gif)
-
Mac OSX is the most advanced operating system in the world, and if you have the hardware to go with it, you will never go back to your Linux SHIT.
So until YOU can make an OS more powerful and more advanced than Mac OSX, keep your mouth shut.
-
You're being divisive by comparing Berkeley UNIX to Linux. Do your homework, note the similarities between the FreeBSD kernel and the Linux kernel, then get back to bashing Windows. Thank you for your time.
EDIT: In case you somehow missed this, Darwin - that would be the core of OS X - borrows heavily from BOTH FreeBSD and Linux kernel. Bashing either of the latter based on your experience with the former is just plain ignorant.
