Well, I have no friends, no life, and most of all no point, which means im perfect for anything in the computer/internet field at the moment.
So yes, im here to stay.
-
So then why were you gone so long?
-
Because I had a life and friends I guess.
I started being more social, and I still am, its just that I have learned that you cant trust anyone, a week ago my best friend backstabbed me completly, and I dont really feel like being with anyone at the moment. I also spend a lot of time on my guitar as well.
However I was gone due to the site going backwards completly.
-
New moderator positions are available. PM me now to see if you could be a moderator too!

Yes he did. Refalm fixed it for him.

WOW!! I don't even know where to start! I have been away for so long, yet checking in every now and then to check things out.
Unfortunately, I was appaled by what had happened to the MES forums I used to know and frequently visit. This is neither a direct, nor an indirect insult to anyone. It is just my personal opinion, and one that I am certain that most of you will agree with.
Anyway, I was really happy to see Refalm being promoted to Administrator and by the assignment of new moderators. I once used to moderate the Linux/Unix forum, but stepped down due to lack of time and after seeing what the MES forums were slowly but steadily turning into.
I have also been too busy with my own project http://promote-opensource.org (http://promote-opensource.org) which is going extraordinarly well for a site that has been up for almost 10 months.
To cut a long story much shorter, I would like to volunteer but only for a maximum of 2 forums, as I am already deeply involved with my site.
Refalm, I am more than happy about you. You never gave up on these forums, while the rest of us did. I admire you for your persistence to make this place a better one and I will be PMing you shortly.
Many greetings to all,
Panos
-
Long time, no see, Panos. Welcome back to the MES. I am very happy to see the resurrection of the forums. (http://smile.gif)
-
Thanks Laukev! Nice to be back! I was really sad by what had become to the forums. Man, that place was once a goldmine, and it slowly degraded into a kindergarten :(
However, that seems to be changing now. I still see many people worth mentioning here, like yourself, Ecsyle of course, Refalm and so on.
Good to be back. I really hope that we can bring these forums back into a readable state and thanks for the welcome back once more! (http://smile.gif)
-
Good to see you here Panos.

Okay, we're almost there... I need two moderators for Hardware and TCPA! PM me to volunteer (Hardware used to be my favourite section btw, nothing happeneds, great for slackers ;) )
-
Shouldn't there be 4 mods per forum?
-
Just a question, why has my third mod position moved from TCPA to Not Quite Mainstream OSes?

well, I couldn't find anyone who actually uses a not quite mainstream OS, until I noticed that you use BeOS and OS/2 sometimes. So you're perfect for the job (http://smile.gif)

OK, then.

Why arent there 4 mods per forum?

maybe because there are not enough threads and people posting to justify 4 mods per forum. Yes, it would be nice to have 4, but not exactly neccesary.
-
It's technically possible to have 4 mods per section, but that would just be too much.
-
I... erm... we ( (http://smile.gif) ) did it! Anphanax is now a moderator in the Microsoft Hardware section, so there are now 3 mods on most sections.

But how can it hurt? Someone's always busy or away and stuff. An extra mod everywhere would increase the chances of a mod always being there.
-
are you really that worried about trolls? Seriously. They are not that bad unless you make them that bad. You dont have to destroy every troll we have. Ignore them and they leave.
The more control and "government" we have here, the more likely trolls are going to want to be here to fuck things up. Much like how telling a young child they are not allowed to watch a certain movie, or play a certain video game. It just reinforces that desire to watch or play. Get it?\

Because some people (not calling names) have binned TheQuirk's posts before (which is really bad), I've assigned TheQuirk as moderator of the bin.
So there's no point in binning any of TheQuirk's posts (http://tongue.gif)

Oh, I guess I could also look out for other people's threads... But it's mainly MY posts that are important. :D (http://tongue.gif)

No, what we need is Jimmy James modding, you fool!

As I have shown by my significant contributions to this site in the past that I would be a good choice for moderator so I accept the honor. Thank you. And remember to vote for George Bush for president. Spain, one of our NATO allies, needs our help. No time to show cowardice now. Its time to go after Al Qaeda and other terrorists.

However, it would be nice if the mod in the mac section, was actually a mac enthusiast. Same for a forum like linux, you would want someone who actually liked Linux to be a mod there. It makes sense to me.

By that reasoning, we should appoint Viper as a moderator for the Windows section. Not that I would against it, though we already have Fett and enough moderators for that section.
What am I trying to prove here? I dunno! Yeah, I agree that the sections should be moderated by their enthusiasts.
Sometimes I just don't know what the hell I'm saying.

I wouldn't mind watching The Lounge as a good majority of the trolling and flaming originates there. I'm not advocating the removal of threads or posts unless they're REALLY defamatory to another member, but since it seems that some people here lack the self-control to censor themselves, statements like "you're an idiot for having that opinion" or "worthless troll" used whenever somebody posts something somebody else doesn't agree with are going to need to be edited out. It's just detrimental to the forums as a whole, and doesn't exactly help our members feel better about themselves for coming here in the first place. Members are certainly entitled to their opinions, but when they start calling each other names, it becomes quite impossible to hold an intelligent debate. What the forums need occassionally is a good scrubbing; not carte blanche censorship, but just a general clean-up of the language used so that we may have a more professional image to present to the outside world.

When I defined a troll
not gonna make another attack on ya, dude... we've had enough of that, but...
as I've said before. it's not your place to come up with your own definition of troll and then try to force it on people. that's why everybody got so mad at you!
You got it in your head that a "troll" was pretty much whatever you said. We can't have this if you're gonna be a moderator. You go by the established rules, and NEVER make up your own.
So... it'd be a good idea to stop with your troll obsession and simmer just a little, then things will be allright :-D
-
No idiot, you are 'so thick'.
The difference between you and people like Laukev7 and TheQuirk is that we actually care for this place.
The reason is that we understand this place. We know the tone of the 'site and we know what makes the other members tick. We use our discretion to decide what is relevant to post and the style of writing with which to post it.
YOU DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THIS.
You just plough on posting incredulous volumes of *bullshit* that nobody here actually wants to read. Do you know what this does to the regular members?
Well, I'll paraphrase a great philosopher here; 'It ruffles their feathers and makes them upset'
Hence, by this great man's definition, that makes you a troll.
If you look at the different forums where some of our members post you will see how their posting differs massively to their stuff here. If you were not (and i'm being reasonably politically correct now) educationally sub-normal, then you might realise that there are better locations for posting your drivel than our Lounge. (Which Laukev and I often have to fight an uphill battle to keep from becoming a septic tank)
As TheQuirk has said the vast majority of your post are about G.W.B. or the US government and how you hate them. Problem is, we don't care!!
At least not all of the time.
And that's without beating down upside your head with a damning critique of your argumentative and critical reading skills, which really do leave much to be desired. This, by the way, is something that anyone with moderate intelligence could perform quite comprehensively.
My point is in short, you just don't fit in. You are like a man from Mars. But I'm sure there is a better place for you on the vast internet.
So you need to actually read your posts and ask yourself "Do I come across like an absolute penis face?" before you inflict them upon us. While you are in the reading mood it could also be a good idea to actually read what other people have said, and see if you understand it before replying.
If you can't manage any of this, then I can't stress enough how easy it would be for you to find some place more friendly towards you.
------------------
We'll now get back on-topic:

I mean, "I think TheQuirk should be made moderator".

that's why politics should be outlawed here. this is a computer forum. I know there's a lot of folks here that like to talk politics, but there's also a lot of us that just get tired of hearing the same things over and over again.
This is a computer forum. There's plenty of political forums on the internet, why do we have to suffer through politics here?
Same thing happened at Erudtion. Stryker allowed politics, and honestly, IMHO, the forum has suffered.
Luckily, at my forums, politics are banned.
Everybody, you're all invited to come to http://ecsyle.com/jimmyforum/ (http://ecsyle.com/jimmyforum/)
It's not about computers, but it's not about politics either.
-
Politics are only good to get people pissed off.
according to the common definition of an internet troll from WikiPedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll)
a troll can be one who:
quote:
intentionally naive or politically contentious messages
-
quote:
I think Laukev7 should be mod for the Lounge.
Thanks, but I already AM a moderator for the Lounge. ;)
Anyway, my stance on this...
I don't agree that politics should be outlawed on Microsuck. Let's face it, these days people are much more interested in discussing politics than the latest Microsoft antic or Windows security breach, and for good reasons. Of course, the topics will be heated, but we simply can't stop people from discussing the important issues just because it makes people angry.
As for you, Solaris...
The problem is not that you post about politics as much as how you approach the topic. As Tux said, this is a serious forum, and a certain level of decorum has to be respected.
You should be more succinct when talking about politics, especially when the issue is not the main topic of the forum. You tend to repeat yourself and unnecessarily quote sentences only to add irrelevant or repetitive answers. Just stick to the main point.
Also, you need to work on your spelling, and especially on the quote tags. There's nothing wrong in editing posts just to make corrections, I do it all the time. And when you edit more than once, delete the 'edited by' part at the bottom of post, as the lines pile up and make your post even longer.

As for you, Solaris...
The problem is not that you post about politics as much as how you approach the topic. As Tux said, this is a serious forum, and a certain level of decorum has to be respected.
When it comes to spelling and grammer its not very importantto me so I usually just skip it. What is important to me is the content of the message.
When we talk about politics and the like of Bush its always defending the obvious. Stating bush is not like hitler or is goverment isn't or something. More however these are posted as the starting thread. I just then post why that is incorrect. Of course I have seen these threads repeat themselves so I inturn repost the information in those repeated threads to why that is incorrect.
Warning -> the following is just an exsample to what has been going on. It is to explain my position and has NOTHING to do with the mod selection. Since someone had posted their position on me I thought this would be the best way to explain it since that is a current post that is going on and seems to be in question.
Stuff like why The U.S. can change the Iraqi flag is definnatly going to be heated but then in that same thread where it is quite proven why the U.S. has no such power to do so they repeat what they said from the beginning. Then all of a suddent I got posts on how I was posting too many posts on Bush/911/Iraq etc when in fact I was not. I was responding to the primary post in that tread that was about those subjects.
Thats basicaly how I see it anyways. I did NOT mean to offend anyone. But if you are going to deny a peace of history and fact no less you can't blame another person from correcting it.
Heck if I was gonna go up to someone and state that the holocaust didn't exist it would make me look like an idiot. I did do something of a sort as a kind of a joke but most didn't get that point anyways.
But in any case thanks for the input.

The only time I do that is when someone is trying to say I was doing someting I was not or when one user unfirly attacks the other user and then wonders why he himself is getting attacked. Anyways I see nothing wrong with you, so far you seem to be a really nice guy!

Ahh now THAT makes sence.
[qouote]
You got it in your head that a "troll" was pretty much whatever you said. We can't have this if you're gonna be a moderator. You go by the established rules, and NEVER make up your own.
So... it'd be a good idea to stop with your troll obsession and simmer just a little, then things will be allright :-D[/QUOTE]
Ah ok. Now then. Just let me explain. I didn't come up with it all by myself. I've taken what a troll is through other forums and such. To me it does make sence in that in a community where we are talking about a subject like M$, why would anyone sighn up and then make up a thread that is going to make a lot of people upset.
Like take this given exsample.
Lets say I made up a forum that stated why tomatos are bad and the proven reasons and facts that state why those tomatos are bad and also offer an alternative like oranges. Well a typical troll would sighn up and start stating tomatos rock on an anti-tomato sight no less
EDIT: I have nothing against tomatos! I love it in ketchp, allthough I don't know if i'd count ketchup as a vegetable, LOL)
Characteristics of a troll is always an attack on a subject or a person. Why the 'anti-tomato' group sucks or whatever.
I compounded spelling and grammer. Beceause no matter what troll I run into on whatever community posting whatever offensive thing, they allways makwe an attack on spelling and grammer. Usually because there was no orginal point of the main post of the thread anyways.
I was just looking at it as a logical prospective since I do care alot about this community and I think that this is a VERY great site and forum! If anything it is this fourm I use when I'm confronted with someone that repeats the same m$ FUD over and over again! There is very valuble information here! Even in the lounge.
Because there are so many bush threads and it has been deeply discussed we can see the points and the counter points of each conversation. I do however believe that most discussions in the lounge has not been light harted as of late.
So maby that is part of the problem, I don't know.
So Jimmy James. Thanks for you input and making light of the situation. :D

I do hope everyone remembers where they are at. Look at the address in the browser, look at the icons and text everywhere.

I don't see anything about this being a politics discussion board. Its about moving from MS to "other", switching from Windows to a different, and perhaps better OS. Its about computers. Its not about Bush. I see no reason why there should be politics discussed on this board. The only argument is that the Lounge is open and free, and we should be able to talk about anything in there. Well, to be frank, fuck that shit. I always thought the lounge existed to escape serious discussion and to just fuck around. Maybe I am wrong, but I seriousely doubt it. You wouldnt want this place to lose focus like erudition did. Bad things happen. I feel that it would be a good idea to ban political threads and discussion from the MES.
-
i dont know about outlawing politics but we should try to keep some kind of rule, like for every post in politics try to have about 4 or 5 in other categories.
not so much a rule as a guidline
-
I'm not even going to bother. Like jj and I have just stated we are both sick of it. I've just explainied my side and again you are repeating quirks accusations without any kind of proof. Your just saying I'm a bad guy just because I do not think and act just like you. Not everyone in the world is going to agree with you
Quite frankly if you are sick of the *BS* then don't post it and stay on topic! Teh topic is who is to be mod of the lounge! Its nothing to do with that idiotic rhetoric! Get over yourself!

We could get rid of the lounge completly. That would solve the arguments of off topic arguments in an already off topic section.
or call it something else? maby a place like movie reviews and stuff. Or something.

I will say it again, I strongly oppose banning politics from the MES. I am resonably certain that the Webmaster, who started the forum in the first place (and political as he is), would condemn such an initiative.

Off topic is fine. Serious political debate is not. You want to talk about that shit, go somewhere else.

How do you not see that politics has no place on a comptuer forum?

he doesn't care. we could turn this into the "Microsoft Lovers Society" and he wouldn't give a shit.

Neither do all the other topics in the lounge. So what?
[ July 10, 2004: Message edited by: Laukev7 ]

the Lounge used to be off-topic but still computer related stuff, or a forum game, links to funny flash animations, crap like that... it used to be a FUN PLACE...
but now it isn't.
Hell, this used to be a fun forum, but it's turned so goddamn serious thanks to all this shit!
Same thing happened at Erudition. On any given day, > half the active threads are "controversial topics"
-
Then go ahead and POST some fun stuff. I'm not going to stop you.
There's a REASON the forum became so serious: because the current political situation became so alarming that people are more interested in discussing the situation rather than fool around. It's as if a customer at a hairdresser complained about the patrons discussing politics rather than sports right after the third world war was declared.
-
Everywhere you go, its always fucking bullshit serious politics and world affairs. I dont want to come to a comptuer forum to talk about it. I want to talk shit about windows and OSX, and figure out how I can get dual heads to work in Linux. I want to go to the lounge to let loose and not have to deal with any serious business. Who cares if the worlds political climate is hot right now, go somewhere else to rant about it.
-
but this is nowhere near as absurd as that! it's not even Vietnam bad... hell, it's honestly not much worse than the Falkland Islands
-
Well, in that case, ask the Webmaster if we can create a Politics section on Microsuck. But any initiative that involves banning a topic on Microsuck gets my veto.
-

Are you serious? Its past viatnam! Over 800 U.S. soldiers are dead Pluse over thousands of Iraqies. Pluse we have the bush regime still arogent enough to impose laws onto its U.S. citizens and push his own adgenda on other countries that in the past would at least be considered an alli!
Calling canada a 'terroist haven' just because we feel that the U.S. is 100% completly wrong is beyond that of a friend.
-
I agree! Lets delete some of these political threads. Its just causing too much problems and although I agree with you Laukev7, maybe a cut in the threads themselves is in order. I mean not just to bin but to delete.
So to make everyone happy.

I'll wait for Refalm's opinion on that. We might arrange an unformal rule to post political stuff in one dedicated thread, but I vividly remember that he did not appreciate my last attempt (http://forum.microsuck.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=11&t=000553). I was so embarrassed, I almost resigned over that incident.

That's bullshit.
Also, a little politics on this forum is okay, but it shouldn't become the main topic of discussion.
A political section is just giving in on that. Also, a "political thread" is completely lame and not what our forum is about.

Hey, sorry I saw this late, many days I only check the two sections I already have (Microsoft in the News and TCPA/DMCA) plus the mod section (maybe I should change that to also seeing the Lounge). I'd love to be the mod in the Lounge, since I'd like to think I've done at least a decent job so far in other sections. I'm also a Mac enthusiast, as evidenced by the 6 Macs in my house with OS 8.6, 9.1, 10.3.4, and NetBSD. I've been using computers ever since an SE/30 when I was little, the good 'ole days of System 6. If you can fit in, great! If not, I hope for next time.

HOLY CRAP! Three new moderator positions! Currently are:
- Microsoft Hardware
- UNIX and GNU/Linux
- Mac OS
- Not Quite Mainstream OSes
- The Lounge
Same rules apply. If you want to be a moderator for "UNIX and GNU/Linux" you need to know your cats from your chowns and emac's (although I like Vim better).
PM me to if you're up for it.
You'll hear it before wednesday 14 july (which is also my birthday and stuff (http://smile.gif) ).

I have extensive experience with Apple II OSes and GS/OS... I'm not sure if that counts more as obsolete and forgotten as it does alternate, but it's what I had for most of my childhood.

Decission made. Paladin, who has worked with Novell NetWare, is now moderator of Not Quite Mainstream OSes.
I was looking for someone with some BeOS or QNX experience, so I could ask some questions about it (http://smile.gif) but Novell NetWare will do.

Perhaps you should start a separate thread looking for an alternative operating system or browse some of the links on the main site. There are many places to start learning (http://www.linux.org/info/index.html) about Linux, and get (http://www.linuxiso.org/) your own copy. You can also consider a mac (http://www.apple.com/switch/).
