Title: MS recalls 14.1 million Xbox power cables
Post by: cahult on 17 February 2005, 23:45
It seems Microsoft have done an Apple, they have made themselves a product that can burn down your home!

The recall covers over 70 per cent of that installed base.

Microsoft's move follows 30 or so reports from users suffering minor burns, singed upholstery or scorched carpets as a result of power lead malfunctions, the company said.

that is staggeringly poor form.

at least the victims will only be people who considered nintendo and sony and then thought "nah, i prefer microsoft!"

That's cute, they can't even manufacture a power cord without it blowing up/crashing.

They don't even make it.  This defect covers more than just the Xbox.  MS shouldn't e singled our for this defect.

But still, a 1 in 10,000 failure rate is just unnaceptable when you're shipping out billions of products...

I mean... do the math!

see for yourself:

(longwell is the one being recalled)

Blame Longwell corporation, NOT MS.

Yes, Longwell Corporation has a terrible track record with power cables.  That being said, why exactly did Microsoft purchase from them, knowing their prior history?  Interesting conjecture to be laid there.  ;)

Somthing I Said In IRC:

solemnwarning--13_now: micro$hit are thicker then usual
solemnwarning--13_now: i ordered a replacement power cord
solemnwarning--13_now: my xbox was bought in uk, used in uk and the lead was delivered to uk
solemnwarning--13_now: so they used a us plug <_<
solemnwarning--13_now: btw i took a look at the cord and its just a normal lead with a circuit breaker
solemnwarning--13_now: so its the xbox thatis the fault and not the cable
solemnwarning--13_now: must be somthing with the psu's before 2k4

Actually it's nothing with the PSU.  That theory was debunked (Engadget has a link somewhere).

I didn't bother ordering my replacements... probably should but I'm lazy.  My friend ordered his and said it was handled extremely well, no jumping through hoops or other non-sense.  Just type in your serial number from the box and you're good to go.

I heard a similar thing (by word-of-ear) about the new PS2, or was this some idiot mistaking the two?

This is in swedish so you may not understand a thing but you can see the picture of the two involved. The little kid had the cord replaced after the old cord sparkled and crackled. When he tried the X-box - with the NEW cord - it blew up in a friend

I'm sure the voltage differences between Europe and US hads nothing to do with it.

Sweden uses both 110 Volts and 220, so what mey well have happened, is that the plug was meant for an area that ues 110, and it was used in 220.

There are so many variables other than the power cord.  Don't be so quick to always blame M-Dollar-Sign about theses things.

Regarding the first post:

Why is this considered an Apple? Do you mean the PowerBook 5300s? That wasn't Apple's fault either, Sony made the dodgy batteries.
