I've received it too, and although I'm keeping Slackware, I found Ubuntu pretty good.

You should install it.

Doesn't matter.

What matters is that you create a primary ext3 partition on your slave disc (swap, boot, etc. included of course).

The problem with Ubuntu is that most of the commands are different from other distros sudo instead of su ... and others ... other than that it's pretty good.

sudo is not a command, sudo is a secure root-access library.  su is the command used by users in group:wheel to access root functions.  Both can coexist, and do on either of my primary systems.

It runs well although installing software on it blows but that's just my experiance with Linux in general.

How, can it blow? "dpkg -i <.deb location>" will install a deb package. Alien will install RPM;s and others i think and apt-get install apache2, php4, php4-mysql lib-apache2-mysql mysql-server mysql vsftpd dovecot sendmail will install the packages needed for a simple server. It's the easyest distro to install stuff on.

They are the best bet on making linux mainstream.

But I bet $100 that the first linux virus will be spread by ubuntu users.

I'll bet $ 1,000 the first linux virus will be detected and systems patched before any significant damage is done.

I was pretty much a windows drone all my life, until about a month ago, my hardware went to shit, I got bored and installed Ubuntu 5.04, updated and installed KDE... and now it's my primary OS. The only thing keeping me from completely ditching Windows is certain essential TTF fonts not properly working in Photoshop under Crossover Office... Ubuntu may take a certain amount of getting used to, but it certainly beats the living shit out of Win9x.

The problem with Ubuntu is that most of the commands are different from other distros sudo instead of su ... and others ... other than that it's pretty good.

The Ubuntu developers decided (and rightly so) that having a seperate "administrator" account called some foreign term like "root" would confuse most freshly Windowsified (definition: sick and fucking sick of M$) desktop users. They decided that sudo served most any purpose a typical GUI-user might have. They made it so that the root account was hidden (still existing) yet not a loginable account.

Solution? $ sudo passwd

DONE! YAY!! heehee now all you have to do is login as root and set the icons otherwise they ALL (folders, documents, script, pics, vids, etc.) default to blank page pixmaps when you su or sudo into nautilus or transversely you could copy .gnome from your home directory into /root.

does sudo need a password on ubuntu?

Usually, but I've noticed a timeout mechanism wherein were you to have open synaptic, say, five minutes ago and then decided to sudo nautilus or open disk management you won't be prompted for your user password.

I never use the admin login anyway.

I just su in console or startup konqueror as root.

Try 'sudo su -'

I dont like Ubuntu, actually ive only used Kubuntu, but i dont like it.

I prefer using the console most of them time, so i hate that i have to set the root passwd using sudo before i can su as root.  Although i now understand their reasons for it, im not convinced (and dont have an understanding) if the security of using your user password with sudo to run root commands.

Adept is pretty shitty, they dont seem to have that many packages in their repository, i think theres 4000ish. In debian isnt there well over 10,000.

I don't really like these distrobutions that make you go with one Desktop environment, or window manager. I remember redhat back in the day with every window manager and desktop environment and i would switch between them regularly to see what theyre all about. With Ubuntu you are forced into Gnome, there is also Kubuntu i know, but thats still only two choices.

In Kubuntu they hid the freakin KDE control centre, and in its place have a horrible folder with a trim selection of settings to configure.

I think i would prefer Fedora over Ubuntu (Which i know also only has two choices of DE/WM but I like KDE the best anyway) for a desktop machine. And Debian for a server.

Maybe i'm just a linux user seeing this from a linux user point of view.

no difference in security, just you only have to remember one password. does it reset the root passwd when you logout or restart the computer?

surely there is a way to install new window managers?

This is my biggest problem with Linux in general, if there were only two or three formats then any Linux distro could use any package and they'd all be up to date. Sure you'd still have the choice of different package managers without any of the bother.
