i have windows for workgroups 3.11 installed over a caldera dr-dos 7.03 system.
how do i get it to connect to the internet?
i know my dialin number, i know my logon and password (i suspect these are pap login details)
in fact here;s how it's done in linux:
http://www.nukem.freeserve.co.uk/contents/computing/freeserve/ (http://www.nukem.freeserve.co.uk/contents/computing/freeserve/)
anyway, how is it done in windows 3.11?
i have found a lot of confusing and conflicting info about trumpet winsock etc, and it confuses me and i can't get it going.
also i don't want to use IE, even if it does have its own tcp/ip stack. i don't like or trust IE.
i would rather use mozilla or phoenix or some other open source browser.
i did get arachne but cannot install it as it says i don't have enough memory (hmmph, 640MB of RAM, but then it will be something about memory managers etc)
so can i use some mozilla or firebird do you think?
how does one do this?
thanks in advance.
also, as you will see this is a caldera dr-dos question, not a windows question. not really ;)

I have no idea as to the answer to your question, but I doubt you'll get any 32 bit browser (such as Mozilla) working on a 16 bit OS.

sorry, i forgot to mention i have win32s installed:
http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/mosaic-w/faq/win32.html (http://archive.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/mosaic-w/faq/win32.html)
it allows some (many don't work), 32 bit programs to work.

Calum,
Win 3.11 could support TCP/IP natively but only with a network card. You would need to download the windows 3.11 TCP/IP disk. Why is it a download and not included with 3.11? Well because MS originally thought it would be a good idea to sell it as an addon.
Anyway... that doesn't work with dialup. Win95 was the first MSOS with native dialup TCP/IP support. For Win 3.1x you need a third party program, such as trumpet winsock (http://http:www./trumpet.com/.au).

edit: sorry JJ, these huge embedded images are kind of getting out of hand.

O'Brien is right, you will need something like trumpet winsock to connect to the net on win 3.11 via dialup. You'll have to write your own dialup script, including crap like modem initialisation, phone number, login and password. Shit, I cant believe it was EIGHT years ago that I was using winsock to connect....and Netscape 1.0 to browse lmao. Now that's nostalgia.

okay, i have trumpet winsock 2.0e and 1.0a, 1.0a seems to have a lot more files.
It is all very confusing.
i think i'll be trying these instructions then:
http://www.btinternet.com/~dphelan/tech-writing/FRS-Trumpet-Install-v1.3.html (http://www.btinternet.com/~dphelan/tech-writing/FRS-Trumpet-Install-v1.3.html)
looks like i have netscape 4.76 for windows 3.11 so i'll be using that too.

Why use 3.1 when you can tweak XP ?

Why use XP when you can use Linux?
