Your wide and varied choice is either Mandrake or RedHat, toughshit everybody else! (http://smile.gif)

Let me put it this way: I don't want to register on FuckBoards (http://tongue.gif)

Then vote here.

Now this is the sort of thing that pisses me off. I recently saw an article on the cover of a Linux mag that had a huge tabloid headline - Distro Wars - or some such.
It was essentially about how Suse is trying to do better in the States. And there seems to be a proliferation of best distro arguments going on. I don't care. For a start I don't care if you use Linux, Unix, OS/2, BE, Chaos, ADA, etc. etc.
What I do care about is that the people who need to use an OS use one that is sutable for them. I disregard Windows because it is made by a company whose business ethics appear to me to be the worst of any company in the world.
Linux distributions all have the same basic underpinnings, so you should choose the one ideal to you. Or indeed use something else. For example if you need to use high end analysis then you should use ADA, creative graphics, maybe Mac, hard number crunching has to be UNIX, control interface then OS/2 is a better bet.
And of course some Linux distros have a differing philosophy, so you should use one that fits for you.
Essentially I will not support an Operating system that is too heavy on the wizards. Dependancy on a GUI is the biggest no no in computing, it has no need to be there. And supply of source code is essential. I do not and have never believed that any company has the right to refuse you the source code of a program you have purchased.
What do I care about voting? Why should I vote for a distro. I will vote with my wallet and my connection. I will support those companies who offer me what I require. I am also fundamentally opposed to monopolies - I believe in the competitive spirit and open governence, I do not believe in tyranny and control. If a distro ever starts to be a monopoly, either within or without the Linux fold I will use something else.

It makes sense that no one distro is the best. It would work better to list pros and cons, or what that distro excels at, or their design philosphies.

Why didn't you add more at start, not that i would still sign up though.
btw, i agree with linux frank, finding the right distro for yourself is the best thing.

I vote for Coyote Linux.
-
i would vote for about fifty linuces, not that i have tried them all but fuxxake! for instance, i wouldn't put JAILBAIT linux on my pentium 4 whiz bang 3Ghz 80GB NVidia monster if i had one but if i had to put an embedded linux and XWindows on less than 16MB on an i-opener then i would prefer JAILBAIT over, say, mandrake. This 'poll' is a very badly disguised attempt to get people to sign up on fuckedgrounds. and it won't work. (http://www.akgames.net:8000/Downloads/Files/Personal/1.gif)

its basically whichever distro works best for your machine(S). On my main machine, Evil Entity seems to be best, then RedHat, then slackware (but EvilE is built on slackware). On my server i prefer slackware.

i prefer to use a bit of paper and a pencil. I think that's a much better solution than using a microsoft (TM) pen solution, as the filesystem is more versatile and can be rewritten on.

Red Hat 5.0 with XFree86... lite, compact, fast... minimal hardware support though :(
-
Is this thread still around?
Being a Mac user, I use Xfree86 on the Darwin kernel when I'm in a UNIXy mood; it runs simultaneously with OS X.
I have a thing called Virtual PC, it's a Pentium emulator for Mac. I have Win95 and Gray Cat Linux on it.

i vote for basiclinux.
-
i vote for 2BSD and system V as a tied first place.

Yeah, Microsoft addressed that. They're now marketing Microsoft Whiteout XP and the Microsoft Pencil and Eraser 2000 Advanced Writer.

I didn't realize I was missing out!

wouldn't it be, microsoft blueout 2k

not everything is down to money you know.
i will maintain that lindows is at least as bad as apple or red hat (which is no huge insult, microsoft clearly are much worse than any of those) until they prove otherwise.
SuSE and Lycoris both charge for their linuces and i bear them no ill will so far.
-
Lindows is at least as bad as Red Hat? What the hell is that all about? Red Hat is *nothing* like Lindows. Since when is Red Hat bad, and what makes you think that?

Yeah Calum, RedHat are one of the greatest advocates of free software. They dont seem to uphold their beliefs so much these days (that is I think they have proprietory stuff in their pro. editions - well I think they do)#
But yeah they u sed to be very strict about it.
