Title: A new day...A new virus
Post by: bwid_s_01 on 21 August 2003, 19:29
Is it just me, or has there really been a new virus threat each day in the past few weeks?

The latest one:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=1&u=/nm/20030821/tc_nm/tech_internet_worm_dc (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&ncid=738&e=1&u=/nm/20030821/tc_nm/tech_internet_worm_dc)

quote:
"I got 1300 junk e-mails `delivered' this AM," he said in a message to subscribers Thursday. "Find the person and put him/her in jail."

When will people start realizing the problem and say more logical and practical things like "Find Bill Gates and put him in jail."

That seems like a very logical thing to do for
a) Creating an OS/Office Suite/Multimedia monopoly
b) Stealing code
c) Selling Homeland Security a flawed piece of shit for $90 Million
d) Causing fuckups at Air Canada (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030820/ap_on_hi_te/internet_virus_030819155248)

At least there are some smart people out there:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1209&e=1&u=/washpost/20030821/tc_washpost/a23036_2003aug20&sid=96168965 (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1209&e=1&u=/washpost/20030821/tc_washpost/a23036_2003aug20&sid=96168965)

quote:
But the main cause of virus prevalence, say computer experts, is poorly designed software. The Blaster worm was created to take advantage of a vulnerability in Microsoft's operating system, particularly targeting Windows XP (news - web sites), Windows 2000 (news - web sites), Windows NT and Windows Server 2003. Such vulnerabilities exist because software is distributed without appropriate amounts of testing and because software vendors increasingly create new functionalities that invite infection, they said.

And what's REALLY funny about all this is that Microsoft is using Linux to protect itself from the mess they have created! (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=74&ncid=738&e=9&u=/cmp/20030821/tc_cmp/13100775)

By the way maybe some people already knew this, but I've just discovered that it's possible for Windows viruses to hide in ANY type of file, including TXT, DOC, etc... They don't have to be true executibles no more. So it's now really easy to infect someone by just having them open up a text file.

HA! I got SoBig about 9 times today....of course it does nothing on my real OS (OS X).

It's easy to protect yourself against virii.... stop using M$ products

......

e) Causing Nuclear power plants to shut down
f) Slowing down the web in general

......

ok I just read the last link on the potential dangers of even say text files

quote:
If the file extension is certain CLSID e.g.:
testhta.txt.{3050F4D8-98B5-11CF-BB82-00AA00BDCE0B}
then Windows explorer and IE do not show the CLSID and only the .txt extension,
while the above file is in fact .hta file

OK for me the real problem is with fucking made up, crap, weak standards that M$ seems to invent for itself, i.e.... .HTA (HTML Application). If they'd follow the rules they'd have less fucking problems.

.HTA Crap (http://www.hyperwrite.com/aspscripts/framer.asp?target=../features/html_applications.htm)

M$ does not deserve to be a tech company.

I think the computer viruses mark a coming change in computing.

Sure seems like it to me! The place I've been working at for the past few weeks had at least three viruses/worms running around on the network yesterday, It was nearly impossible to do anything on the computers then or today. One of them was/is SoBig.F,  I don't know about the rest. And as I'm sure you can guess, they run a mish-mash of versions of Windows... considering it's a research lab, you'd think they'd be using something more professional / suited for the work, but no...

SoBIG is pissing me off.  My inbox is flooding  with incoming emails sending the virus or claiming I sent it to someone else... using a secure OS like Linux isn't helping with that.

Plus the damned network is FUBAR with all the virus traffic.

ho hum.

until the public WAKE UP to what worms and viruses are and why they are so terrible, the situation will NOT change. until companies who sell antivirus software and who make their money off forced upgrades stop churning out the FUD, the public will not wake up.

I definitely think it will take more than this, since M$ is convincing people that it was no big deal (and it's working based on who I've heard from). But what are the chances there wont be another event like this if it's already happened twice a year? Eventually they'll wake up after something more drastic happens.
