Title: Virtual PC? Whats up with that?
Post by: bling on 26 March 2003, 18:29
Does it actually work? How well does it emulate windows software, i.e. games. Or is it just for office and stuff.

What windows programs do you need to run on a mac?  Viruses?

VPC does not have DirectX...so, in other words it will not work with 99.999% of winblows games

Warcraft III is both Mac/PC, so if you bought the PC version, there is a Mac installer...same thing with Quake 3 gold, and a bunch of others, I'm sure.

Other Mac Game Porters/Mfrs:
www.aspyr.com (http://www.aspyr.com)
www.macplay.com (http://www.macplay.com)
www.ambrosiasw.com (http://www.ambrosiasw.com)
www.blizzard.com (http://www.blizzard.com)
And many more.

So, in other words, it's pretty much for Office. Appleworks can read and save in Office formats, as can a few others (Thinkoffice, etc). M$ actually makes Office for Mac, too.

So, there is almost no point in owning VPC.
Glad I saved you the $230, aren't ya?

There's a program called Real PC, which is similar to Virtual PC, except it's much cheaper and (they claim) they can run Direct X applications, like games.

The only drawback is that you have to also own a copy of the OS you want to install on it.

Link?
The only things I can find are really old - like Win 95 and stuff.

http://www.fwb.com/ (http://www.fwb.com/)

It has a link to buy and/or learn more.

I don't know what this program is like, as I don't own a Mac.  It does seem rather old....

Too bad none of us want to use any windows-only apps besides games, and like people said, direct x isn't included so it's rather pointless!

Most software I use in Windows can also be used in Linux. Mozilla for webbrowsing, Gaim for AIM, ICQ and Y!IM, dMSN for MSN Messenger, OOo as my office packet, X-Chat for IRC, Vi IMproved to edit text, CSS, PHP, HTML.

And most games can be emulated through WineX (probably gonna pay for that, but it's a small price to pay for such good software). Otherwise, I'll just get some ports (you'll be amazed how cheap Linux and Mac OS X ports cost  :D )

The only things I would miss are Ad-aware and Spybot. They are very good programs. Too bad they have no use in Linux.

Why do you need Windows? Almost every Windoze application has a counterpart on the Mac side.

i liked your point..but only windows applications work on windows..not on mac..and most people use windows..so you can't share anything from them on your mac...that's why i think VPC is good...

A Microsoft Word 2000 document made on a PC opens just fine on any Mac application that has the capibility to open Word documents.
Files aren't platform specific. Applications are, but as I was saying before, there is a Mac counterpart for any PC application you could possibly want to use.

you want clear answers when i can't even understand your totally garbled question?
did it ever occur to you that nobody will answer your VPC questions because perhaps none of the mac users here have ever needed to use a PC emulator, because their mac is so much better?

That is not true! Most Windows applications HAVE an OS X counterpart and most Windows files, even M$ Office ones, can also be opened by OS X apps. So, why get VPC really?

alright..alright..so you all mean i don;t need anything like VPC when i buy my mac...and nearly all windows things would work on mac..

Ummm... I "bought" Virtual PC a few weeks ago, installed Win 98 and still have no reason to keep it occupying precious HD space...

how much disk space does VPC needs?
and are there any advantages of VPC that you bought?? cause i want to buy mac and so thinkin to buy VPC for it...

I'm of the opinion that you'll just waste your money on VPC. However, I do not know what kind of software you want to run on Windows. Hence, check to see if the apps you already have for windows, do have an OS X counterpart. Just to make sure.   ;)

VPC is slow for games unless they are old DOS games. Nothing 3d or whatever. Don't expect to be running Neverwinter Nights, or Half Life on it. The newest thing I was able to run on it (with some bugs) was Fallout 2. Now that it has a Mac port I don't need to bother anymore.

VPC is good to have if your into old DOS RPG's like me. I like the early Ultimas, SSI games, and Wasteland alot. But it's not like a REAL PC. My advice, save your 300 bucks and buy an old PIII or something along with your Mac.

It takes some space (the app itself), approx. 50 MB. (I'm using vers. 5.0.4), but each Windows OS you install on your HD takes some space too depending on the OS.
MS-DOS can take less than 50 MB., but Win Ex-Pee can suck 2 GB. of disk space. My sincere suggestion: If you wanna use Windows programs, run them on a PC. VPC is a good emulator, but its performance is (obviously) not good. Consider this: If Windows on a PC sucks a lot imagine how much sucks inside a Mac. And like some people said, everything you wanna do with a computer has a Mac-native program to do it... Buy a Mac. Live well. And God bless. Hope it can help!!

Max Payne and medol of honor both run on mac.

As for froot loops well ..... most of the techno music and music videos you will encounter are most likely built on a mac.

Professionals often use macs. So if you want to be creative with a mac you will have to use professional software.
