Title: Web Site Development - Things I Despise!
Post by: voidmain on 20 December 2001, 10:40
Here's one Webmaster can participate in, hopefully I don't piss him off and make him kick me out.

Things that make web sites suck, or just web sites that suck:

1) MSN Wrappers around commercial sites
2) Shockwave/Flash Intro pages
3) Excessive use of animated gifs
4) Poorly implemented frames
4.a) any use of an iframe
5) excessive use of Java and JavaScript
5.a) having this browser check:
Code: [Select]
6) Use of vbscript
7) http://www.espn.com (http://www.espn.com)
8) http://www.nhl.com (http://www.nhl.com)
9) Passport
10) ASP

My list is much longer than this but I'll wait and see if anyone can add to the list.

What about those irritating 'Click Here To Enter' front pages?

popups that tell you nothing

popups that come up when you leave the site

scripts that prevent easy use of the back feature (a page that redirects you to the next page... so back just takes you to the redirector)

clicking a link and getting an advertisement page that directs you to your intended page 5 seconds later.

forums where people open up 2 year old threads  :D

haha. nice  ;)

oh yeah. i hate sites with huge annoying background images with text over it that completely destroys all legibility. people with images that are scaled down and misproportioned so it makes the site take hours to load. and blogs. even though i have one  (http://tongue.gif)

I don't remember this thread but I happen to agree with void main all the way on the reasons he mentioned. A website should provide information and most of the time this information is obscured by annoying animated gifs, huge swf clips that take a century to load on 56k, tons of pictures and images etc.

Every web designed goes through that stage though. It's less about making a page that is easy to read and understand than it is fun to make a page that people can look at and say "hay ur page iz rox0rz" in the guestbook. Hell, I think I'm still in that stage!

1) Light text on light background
2) Ryan and Friends
3) Websites that log your ip and show it to the       public
4) Use of huge images
5) Pages that require you to use IE, then it install a program on your computer

There are 2 sites, other than the one of the World Wide Web Consortium of course, which every potential web designer should visit:

http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com (http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com)

and Eric Raymond's HTML hell page at:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/html-hell.html (http://www.catb.org/~esr/html-hell.html)

popups, flash.shockwave (unless it's something like www.homestarrunner.com (http://www.homestarrunner.com)  (http://tongue.gif) )

too much design, not enough content.
when the whole site is in a javascript popup. *grr*

btw, here's a badly done site (on purpose) by me:
www.localhoons.tk (http://www.localhoons.tk)

hope you hate it.

Can't make a website more lame than this:
http://gush-xpx.refalm.com/ (http://gush-xpx.refalm.com/)

Although it says refalm.com at the end, this is not my website. gush-xpx is the website of a friend who hasn't got a clue about webdesigning.

1. He uses Flash for a simple mouse-over (thanks for not supporting Lynx now, asshat).
2. He stole my PNG picture and turned it into a lame jpg (it isn't transparent anymore too).
3. His fucktard friend shows a lame JavaScript which says "This is the info about your IE".
4. He's got a stupid Flash intro.
5. The menu is Flash too, which isn't good for Lynx and requires scrolling down.
6. Lame "The Pianist" banner at the bottom.
7. Steam is cool, but there is no point in placing Steam logo's all over the place.
8. Too much "Under Construction".
9. Thanks for not including me in the "Best Friends" page.

So I was thinking about braking the DNS link.

What pisses me off most:
Sites that ban my domain because some moron on my IP  did something fucking STUPID, thus forcing me to use a proxy to access the site!

Oh, and forum necro pisses me off too.
