Title: I am turning envy-green
Post by: worker201 on 18 November 2005, 23:14
I went up to the oceanography department office a few minutes ago to steal some candy from the receptionist.  UPS had just delivered 2 Apple boxes, and I wanted to see what they were.

2 G5 2.5GHz Quads

Dual-core dual-processor, with 4 GB cache total

Let me tell you, those things are impressive even when they are still in the box.  I guess somebody had a shitload of grant money to spend this year.  I know one of the guys who got one, and I carried it down to his office for him. And I contemplated running out with it.  Just take the thing home, put it in the car, and go.  Cuz that's the only way I could ever get one of those things.

do it ! ... nah, I'd just build my own PC from scratch ... maybe have dual-core dual Opteron processors ... the G5 uses Motorola processors ? or ? ... I suppose they are not bad (never heard of em), but not as good as an Opteron I bet, besides

Processor Manufacturer      Motorola

Processor Upgradability    Not upgradable

The G5 is made by IBM.  And, these latest models (dual-core) will bring more performance-per-MHz than the previous ones - 1MB L2 per core, and faster RAM (which can actually be utilized.
