Well there is always Firearms(a half-life mod). Alot more realistic(or at least somewhat) and has a totally diffrent feel to it, along with less cheaters/lamers. It's smaller then DOD and way smaller then CS, all without being too small to have enough server.

The reason why something like CS was mentioned has to do with it's fanbase. Everyone knows what CS is, your guranteed to gets tons of players and clans and servers.

I'd love to join a clan, especially a fuck microsoft clan. I mainly play Half-life, although im sure I could somewhat easily get ahold of Quake, Quake 3 or UT.

The big problem is, servers for X cool non-HL mod.

so is there a version of the actual game for Linux... or just the server?

my suggestion, regarding the afformentioned arguments, opinoins, articles, and such, heretofore, particular, subservant, and et cetera is....

FUCK IT

WHO CARES IF IT RUNS IN WINDOWS OR NOT

let's just create units or teams or leagues for whatever game on whatever platform with a prefix:

FMS_

then, whenever some lamer asks, FMS meand FUCK MICROSOPHTTTTTT yo [@^^eRR phaggiot now delete it AHHHHHH

what better way to spread the word?  i KNOW the elites whose hands have slaughtered me in so many games are RIGHT HERE talking SHIT but NOT backing it up actively (no offense, just rallying)

get the gamers in!!! and just imagine knowing that fuckers like goosefucker cock and xpHOzer are dying over and over again with th BFG9000 crying to granny AHHHHHHH

do it fucker to it!! if you need a freebsd server i got one with power windows JUST FUCKING ASK ME AHHHHHHHHHH

kill the fuckers if they don't join

ASL?  death.

whoa sporkme ... forgot to take your valium?   :D

to get back on topic:

a RTCW clan would appeal a lot more to me (seeing I don't have CS anymore and couldn't get it running with WINE either)

these games are all to confusing for me, can we set up some sort of internet version of XBill? maybe it could use the real internet as the levels? you know, so that whenever you stop Bill Gates from stealing one of your operating systems, a real windows machine goes down? how hard could it be to write this program?

i kind of like the idea now i have thought of it! of course, it would need to be constantly updated since it would probably count as 'malicious code' in the corporate antivirus updates, and it would need to move with the times to be able to insure that it could really fuck up windows machines. Still, what an incentive to play!

LOL! I'd love it. Just make sure it has something to protect home PC markets, many of us still have wind0ze on our box.

oooooo, my favorite subject: HL/Counter-Strike! just had to chip in on this one...

NO - HL (client) has not been ported to linux, though i had read around a year ago that a port has secretly been in development for some time. well, a year later and still no port. i wouldn't count on there ever being a port either. vALVE is notoriously slow in these areas. and since HL hasn't been ported, obviously CS cannot be ported. however i'm told that HL/CS runs quite well under WINE.

saw a few comments on the problems with the HL code. well, that is true. HL/CS is thee most popular multiplayer FPS game there is by a factor of around 2, in spite of the fact the quake based engine is 3 yrs. old, with hundreds of thousands of players on-line at any one time and a 5 million+ player base. when you have something that incredibly popular, poor code or not, it's going to get hacked -- especially in the gaming community where there are a whole LOT of malicious hackers. this is certinly not something specific to CS however. dealing with cheaters is an every day thing for any reputable server admin and tools other than vALVE's anti-cheat software are freely available and manage to be pretty effictive.

if you are looking for quality, mature people and cheat-free servers, there's plenty to be had. look around. and the above statement that "98% of them are cheating" is totally off the mark. that simply just isn't so. yes, there are cheaters, but any half-baked server admin can easily and effictivly deter cheating due to a wealth of anti-cheat tools in addition to the recently developed technoligy introduced by vALVE.

Right we seem to have mixed opinions and i know how to sort it out.

We are going to start a clan for various games - INCLUDING HL/CS

* If you wan't to join, then do so, and help with the planning.

* If you do not FUCK OFF and stop giving other people grief.

OK?

Well.. I have half-life game of the year edition and can download counterstrike for it and i have a windows machine... but i might play it through VNC from my linux machine       , so i will join if someone gets a server running.
I could make and host a website for it too and get the vhost counterstrike.fuckmicrosoft.com.

http://chatroom.fuckmicrosoft.com:8000/counterstrike.html
hows that for a basic template. And is someone else wants to help make it i might give them a ssh account (X11?)

Well when I get HL running, I MAY(may as in "I'd love to, just gotta find out about my time") join a CS/non-CS Half-life FMS clan.

HL might not be so bad under Wine because:

1:Linux is susposed to take better advantage of high power(well it's susposed to be, but it's wind0ze fault) stuff like 433's, 384mb ram, and a Voodoo 3 card.

2:Running windows stuff under Linux is susposed to make it more stable(thus it don't crash so much etc). I know I've had HL crash on me for NO FUCKING REASON.

3:Even if im still emulating windows, what if im only emulating the gaming ability and not all that other useless crap, so thus it could take better advantage of my hardware(or more resources). So in theory, I MIGHT not lose much performance. Im not overly confident in improved performance, but I am hopeful in equal performance.

Testimonals anyone?
