I was suprised, years ago when the Playstation was made, i was wondering what the hell sony where doing. I became quite anti-sony but when i seen the Playstation 2, which was finally upto date with technology. And shitted all over my Nintendo 64 (Which i still love). When i heard Microsoft where making a console in the early 2001 period (i think) i was suprised also. But when i think about it, who is next to enter the Console game, Sun, Apple (possible), IBM, Transmeta (Theyd make a good Game-boy alternative), nVidia (who knows?).

What I do know is that sony have somthing cooking, somthing awesome, Microsoft will be hammered soon, because sony will release somthing great, just like when they did the PS2.

Im disapointed with Nan Tendo because they replaced the cartridge (the thing that made there consoles own!) and replaced it with some crappy optical thing.

So id prefer a playstation, i might even get xbox, and xbox-linux.

But Linux needs a better graphics framework first.

How would cartriges be useful in today's world? They merely jack up the price. Maybe in the old days cartriges meant very low load times and better performance, but there is no need for chips in the game itself today.

The Linux console still has a future. Perhaps Linux consoles could have:

1)A highly specialized distro, tailor compiled and configured for the console. Out of the box, boot times are tremendous, and performance is better then out of the box PC distros.

2)Perhaps you can go one step further and have "dual boots". You store two versions of the console Linux OS on the harddrive. One version is designed solely for running the game, the other version can run games with a minor performance drop, and word process and surf the net.

3)PC compatibility. Imagine being able to play most Linux PC games on the console. In addition, there would be some linux console only and dual Linux PC/Linux console games, that could benefit from the special coding, hardware, and architecture of the console(the dual games would be coded to work a little different on the console version).

4)Linux software! Your Linux comes bundled with all sorts of freeware goodies.

5)PC upgradibility. Perhaps you would be somewhat limited in how you can upgrade your console, but the possibility is still there. Stuff like the CPU, sound card, and video card would have to be standardized, so you coulden't just pop-in any old upgrade. This allows the console to get a performance boost that a PC don't have. I can see things like RAM, harddrive, and modems being changeable. Also, things like controllers, keyboards, mice etc. The biggest advantage is that if it works for a PC, it will probably work for the Linux console. Any hardware that is certified by the makers will have automated kernel recompiling instructions available from the console maker's website for download.

Now about kernel recompiling, I know you don't have to do this, but it would mean a performance boost if you have the whole OS specfically optimized for one particular set of hardware.

So all in all, a Linux console has alot of potential.

Que? You'd prefer cartridges (N64 ones had max 256mb memory) over thie "optical thing" (1.5 GB). Sure they coulda just used regular old DVD, but they have seemingly stopped emulator programmers in thier tracks so far.

Either way, cartridges may have no load time and durability, they still have way less space and are way more expensive.

BTW. is whole call a company by some "offensive" name thing driving anyone else mad? Nan Tendo. $ony. M$. It always reminds me of this

Although RIAA stands for Recording Industry Association of America, it dosn't matter if your in Australia, Mexico, China or wherever, the RIAAs shit will affect you. They have already attacked people in both Europe and China for going against their ways. You think they don't lobby the Aussie gov?

And yes, I admit PS2 does rule, I bought mine long before I knew anything about Napster etc...

Also I think it kicks ass that the Aussie gov. said no to $ony about the mod chip issue.

as for these things:

cartridges kick ass, sorry, they're just more expensive that's all. Shame they're harder to break, or they might still be around (CDs work better with planned obsolescence).

Also, as for the console wars, i am still loyal to Sega. never had much enthusiasm for consoles since they got out...
