Yeh, I am new to this whole site. I have really always hated mictosoft. The problem is I love half-life and other online games!!! So finding a good OS that plays online games is really hard. Also, Windows is a good product if it were made by Mac then that would be good.
Does this exist??

A OS that is recognised by windows compatible only programs and runs well??? It is quite a lot like windows and is free to download, it must be easy to use (like windows) Does this exist??? :confused:

closest thing would be Mac OS X

Broad commercial support, stability, speed, ease of use.

But...

Requires Carbon or Cocoa ports of said games (unless you're a masochist and LIKE running games in Classic!), isn't free... in fact it's cost is tied in with a requirement that you have the most expensive hardware dongle on the planet... an Apple computer.

But... once you pop, you can't stop. If you can spend the doh, switch.

You can even run some windows wares with Virtual PC.

Why do you need Windows to do that?

You can emulate Half-Life in Linux via the WineX emulator. WineX costs $ 15, Linux is for free. You can download Linux distributions here...
I recommend Lycoris Desktop/LX, Mandrake Linux or Red Hat Linux because they are easy to use.

Or better, buy Unreal Tournament 2003, it comes with a Linux and Windows CD-ROM in one box.

I recomend RedHat 8.0 Linux and WINEX can be downloaded for freee, but its a little more difficult. You can play half-life in WineX and even online.

I think he would Love Linux. But please understand (directed to noob) Linux is NOT windows.
And though it is great, and does everything we want it to do, it is NOT windows. And although it is possible to run windows programs with wine, and winex, it is not exactly easy. Settle for a dual boot, for now.

Rudecat, I think you were being dissed because your too hard on the n00b.

Ok Wine and WineX(haven't tried WineX yet) is really not plug and play. I tend to look at these as tools that Linux masters get after lots of hardwork mastering Linux and being a super user in general, only then can they have near flawless emulation of alot of wind0ze games. Is that a correct assertion?

Wine and WineX probably aren't plug and play because no one(yet) sees the need to make a version that is super compatible(and super easy to set up) for n00bs. I mean when your good enough to easily use these programs, you tend to not be concerned about new arrivals and live in your own little bubble of iniquity(not sharing your skills with desperate n00bs) in your Linux castle.

I've tried some experiments with Wine, not heavily though. Out of curiosity I tried running a wind0ze SNES emulator on Wine(emulatating an emulator, nice and geeky, except im hardly a geek), runs fine(and slow, but that's what happens when you emulate emulation) but acts(the SNES emulator) like it can't see any configuration files for it(even though they exsist). If Wine was n00b friendly, I could just run the SNES emulator in Wine and it would automatically know of the configuration files in it's directory.

So I just say f0ck Wine, that is the tool of gods, im not a god yet.

actually you can't do that anymore. Valve Anti-Cheat now checks if you are running Half-Life through a program (like wine) and if you are, it considers you to be cheating and it bans you from that server. the mods currently supported by VAC are Counter-Strike and Day Of Defeat. TFC will soon be supported

Is Valve aware of that problem? Are they going to consider figuring out a compromise? Could a compromise be reached that allows Wine to run HL, but prevents cheat programs as falsely identifying themselves as Wine?

The thing is, cheats aren't identifying themselves as Wine..Wine is identifying itself as Wine. The servers are banning the use of Wine. It is understandable, because if the software was intended to run in Linux it would've been ported over to Linux nativley. Those games are designed to be Win32 only...so all I can say is tough shit if they don't allow you to play online without Windows. ;p

Wine is identifying itself as Wine, but that doesn't mean VAC is desgined to pick up on a Wine signature. Maybe it's just designed to blindly detect Half-life being run by an external program. I highly doubt that Valve would be arrogant enough to actually single out Wine.
