Why is there a 50% chance that that link doesn't take you to where it is supposed to ... this is the second time I clicked it and it took me to some IBM site

Crap ... it must be firefox ... I mean ever since I switched to 1.5 I've had problems (well ... more problems than with 1.0). Lots of strange shit happening (pages fail to load, strange re-directs), and crashes too. :( Could it be firefox ?

Those are called "ads" and they make the web go 'round.
Seriously, though, were I to guess, you're probably hitting up against a bad batch of ads that have been coded to redirect the viewer to the originating site.
If I were you, I'd bring that to the attention of TopTechNews, as I doubt their advertising programme allows such misbehaviour.

Reinstall... if it keeps happening... I've also noticed that some extensions fuck with the ad blocking features in Firefox and other strange things like causing a click where you hadn't clicked.

Yeah ... there's a very good chance extention conflict is the cause of these problems. It doesn't happen that often, so it should be ok for now.
