Hmm, neat.

Why do you need 9.0.4 for SheepShaver anyway?

So, uh, what does SheepShaver do? And how did they get Mac OS 9 ("Classic") to run on an Intel Mac?

SheepShaver goes back to when BeOS was on PPC.  It allowed for PPC virtualization and later moved onto emulation.  SheepShaver emulates a PPC CPU on an x86 machine, and provides virtualization on a PPC machine (nice for some apps and games that never would run right in classic).  It's an open source project now and runs on Linux, OS X, and Windows.  It does not run OS X.  It's fairly straight-forward to get going; the only glitch is getting the right ROM / OS combo.

I have a couple apps I never upgraded to OS X, and don't use frequently enough to justify the price to purchase.  Plus I want to have 25 years worth of Mac software still at my fingertips no matter where I'm at.

I have Classic on a G4, but never liked it. I can't upgrade some things because of permissions (I think). Some parts of the OS are locked.

How do you choose the size of the install? I don't have a lot of room left, but I do have a OS 9.0 bootable disc. If I install 9.0, can I upgrade to 9.0.4?

9.0 isn't usable for many apps.

On a 1.25 GHz ppc G4 will this run at a usable speed?

Keeping old apps makes sense. I have a friend who has thousands of dollars in legit registered web, photo and publishing apps who refuses to go with OS X and have to buy the stuff all over again. His G3 laptop is more than fast enough to run X.

What's the advantage over Mac-on-Mac?

Mac OS 8 to Mac OS 9.0.4 do not require a MMU(Memory Management Unit) which sheepshaver has not implemented. So, versions over 9.0.4 are unreachable by emulation, since a step above(PearPC) won't emulate OS 9 at all.
Operating System Advocacy. I've given up on the Microsuck project, as well as any of the minisite spinoffs. You can still view the new beta site, though!

It's a virtualizer.  OS 9 will be as fast as it has always been.
