ubuntu frugal install :)
« on: 14 July 2006, 00:27 »
I'm typing this now from xubuntu dapper live running on my hard drive ... I may be (probably not though) the first to ever do this :)

Took a bit of work as ubuntu live stops booting if it doesnt detect your cdrom (I have a cdrom less Dell L400 laptop). So I had to extract the initrd.gz, hack the scripts to mount my partition on /cdrom and skip the cdrom stuff.

Recompressing the cpio archive caught me out as you need to specify the right format.

Speed wise its brilliant (500mhz+256MB ram). Only wish it came with OO.org like breezy did. Takes a while to boot though.

Better still I'm connected on my 802.11b wireless network through my home server in turn connected to the router.

...I need a life :P

Not sure about xubuntu, dubuntu, or any other buntu, but regular ubuntu's live cd is flawed as an install cd, which is what is now offered as the default. It runs out of memory @ install when you have 256mb or less. But other than its dead cd, Ubuntu is quite nice.

Did you install it from within the live system or from the front menu?
any swap partitions?

I don't like the idea of installing from the live CD anyway.

But wouldn't you only have problems when you're installing *and* running loads of other crap like OOo etc.?

I installed from the Live CD (DVD actually). I hadn't even set up HD partitions yet. I was geting annoyed with hos slow the Livecd was, and said...what the hell, install it anyway. It went into the installation GUI, asked some questions, then the next thing I know...POW Ubuntu is up and running.

Alright, dammit, I'm going to try it.  Currently downloading Ubuntu 6.06 for PC and for Mac.  Going to see how well the live cd works with my trusty old G3 this weekend.  Probably get around to playing with the PC version next week.

Also, just for kicks, I'm attempting to download Vector again.

Gotta install it on my Semp64 box, was waiting for the Automatix script to be done up for 64 bit comps. Cause I've been using Breezy with Automatix on my old P4 for months now and it's really kicking ass. I converted 2 ppl to linux with Ubuntu+Automatix.

Yeah, but isn't there a text mode installer in the alt CD?

Hey, Duo, what's this? The Automatix list says not to install these if you live in the US.

23a) Installs NON-FREE audio codecs - BD (386/ppc)
23b) Installs NON-FREE DVD codecs -BD (386/amd64/ppc)

the codecs use compression/decompression algorithims patented or copyrighted in the USA because of their damn stupid intellectual property laws its illegal to use those codecs without paying a licence and/or its illegal for someone to distribute those codecs in the states without paying a royalty

I installed Xubuntu simply because I got pissed trying to compile GTK to compile the GIMP on FreeBSD. This is the first damn distro I've seen without GCC or any compiler for that matter.
