IE8 for Macintosh?
« on: 26 March 2009, 02:51 »
Yahoo wants me to "upgrade" the browser in my G4.

Oh, sorry.

Wait a minute, I'll just change my user-agent string.

Well, what do you know!

Of course, renaming an .exe file to .dmg might not work exactly as planned.

That's okay Worker. It's fun surfing bad sites from a PPC. I even found a worm written just for OSX on a fake pr0n site, diguised as a flash player dmg. I didn't run it. It was only 24kb. It changes your dns lookup and sets a cron job in case you try to delete it

I found this too on my Yahoo as well. I think it is very odd, especially after the "falling out" Microsoft and Yahoo just had.

I think Yahoo very much wants to do longterm business with Microsoft.  I just don't think they wanted Microsoft be the only one to make money out of the deal.  Microsoft's short-term offer didn't match Yahoo's long-term predictions, which is why they declined.  The 2 still have to work together in order to compete with Google, it's just that the money will be split between 2 companies now.

Provided you could properly convince IE8 that you are installing it on a Windows Vista/7 install, I think it should work. Internet Explorer no longer seems to be integrated as much into windows as it once was. For instance, if your in "My Computer", and type www.google.com into the address bar, it no longer just turns the window into IE, it launches your default browser to that URL you typed in. In my case it started firefox up right to the google main page.

IE8 probably uses a lot of .NET and graphiclayer stuff that will never run properly in wine.  The only reason to use IE over some other browser is to have unrestricted access to system components.  Of course, that's also one of the reasons it's such a virus whore.

There is an IE8 app that runs from the desktop in OSX on Intel Macs only. There is also a plugin for FF2-3 that adds the new features of IE8 to Firefox. http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Firefox-Extensions/IE8-Activities-for-Firefox-38709.shtml

This fix involves a little work converting Microsofts' free beta VPC/IE8 image so it will run under VMWare or Parallels: http://blog.mozmonkey.com/2008/vpc-ie6-ie7-ie8-on-mac-os-x/

http://www.kronenberg.org/ies4osx/    This one runs in Darwine on Intels Mac. It does not include Windows, it's just a standalone browser app that runs from the desktop in X11.

And if you are a little warped mentally you can add the ActiveX plugin for Firefox then embed the Windows Media Player in Firefox to make an IE only website work completely.  http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=206213

Links/evidence, please.
I'll install it, if it exists, just for kicks.

It's this one Worker. It's only for Intel macs and uses wine. You can add the media player, flash and java if you like.

http://www.kronenberg.org/ies4osx/

I tried it on my ppc and when i double clicked it, it said it won't run on my platform.

This isn't IE8, it's IE6 - you can tell by the way it chokes on transparent pngs.  Anyway, you're not missing much - it's by far the most crashtastic program I've ever used.  3 total attempts.
1. Window opens and attempts to load winehq.  All graphics appear, including the wineglass png (with background), but load indicator shows that the paged never finished loading completely.  The window is completely dead - can't left or right click anywhere.  After about 15 seconds, the process kills itself, with no error messages.
2. Window opens and attempts to load the IE homepage, which would probably try to convince me to upgrade to IE8.  But all that loads are a light blue background and a small white rectangle before the window goes dead, as before.  20 seconds later, process dies again.
3. Window opens and attempts to load winehq again.  Doesn't get nearly as far as before.  Was able to take the following screenshot before death occurred:
http://www.triple-bypass.net/download/screenshots/ie6-leopard.png

(notice that in the screenshot, reported internal temp is 75C - now that the process is dead, temp is down to 63)

Well, that was exciting.  Never again.

This one isn't easy, but they say it works. You have to convert a VPC image from MS to make it work.

Yeah, I'm not excited enough about it to go through all that work of running qemu.
