Win XP and zonealarm
« on: 10 May 2002, 00:29 »
Ok guys, I have crossed over as well to Mandrake.
Been learning it and loving it so far.

but I have a problem and that problem is my wife.
She didn't like linux so I dual boot it to have winxp and mandrake.

we also have zonealarm installed on our system each time zonealarm comes on all these popup windows come asking if

1) To allow Generic Host Process for win32 services to access the internet.

2) To allow Generic Host Process for win32 services to act as a server.

3) Application Layer Getway service to act as a server.

4) TCP/IP servics application to act as a server.

What is all this? another way for microsoft to keep and eye on us? or just innocent files accessing the internet. either way I don't like the idea of any file to act as a server.

If I deny access to these files I can't use the internet.

any help would be great.

is there any settings in Zone Alarm to stop it from contacting a certain site?
If there is, i recommend blocking your computer from contacting microsoft.com and blocking microsoft.com from contacting you.

To find out what those processes are, block them, then try your browser, if it still works then leave them blocked, if it doesnt work then unblock each process individually until you find out which one is the one which will let the browser onto the net.

The Windows NT evirement(XP=NT5) needs a TCP/IP connection to connect to the internet... Microsoft isn't spying on your computer through this way. Microsoft is spying on you through Windows Media Player... other companies are too you know...
If you want no-one to spy on your PC, follow these things:
- Use less M$ software, install alternatives and if removable, remove M$ software
- Pay a visit to LavasoftUSA and install Ad-aware and run it!
- Install ZoneAlarm Pro, much safer anyway (get the serial from Cracks.am, but do it when your wife is away (porn banners ya' know))
- No KaZaA, Comet Cursor, BONZIBuddy or Go!Zilla these companies spy on your PC...

Feel free to contact me for help, I'm bored anyway

the settings in the free version of zonealarm don't allow you to block individual sites. You should install opera, and mozilla and block explorer.exe and iexplore.exe from connecting at all for a start.

The reason the popup boxes come back every time is because you are not checking the 'don't tell me next time' box.

You can disable onscreen alerts and get it to write to a log file instead too.

The secret to a good firewall setup is learning to use the firewall.

That is why he told him to get a crack (so he would not have to pay).

Those 4 pop ups are NORMAL, MS is NOT spying on you, those are used for internet (don't remember exactly what they did, if you're brave, search MS, they'll tell you what they do.)

If you don't want MS "spying" on you...

1) Turn off Error Reporting (Right click my computer, Properties, Advanced, Error Reporting.

2) If you use WMP, and want to neuture it, open WMP and go Tools, Options, and clear "Download codecs automatically" "Allow internet sites to uniquely identify your player" "Aquire liscenses automatically" "Start player in Media Guide", on the "Media Library" tab select "No access" for both, and clear "Automatically add purchased music to my library". WMP will now not send any personal info about you or your computer to anyone.

3) Uninstall Windows Messenger, go Start, Run, and type in

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

4) Disable some services, go start, run, type in services.msc and you might want to disable "Messenger" "Remote Registry" "SSDP Discovery Service" "Universal Plug and Play Device Host". All of those you will never need, and will only cause security breeches.

5) If you have broadband, go into the control panel, Network connections, right click your connection, properties, and you can safely uninstall all the protocalls there except for TCP/IP. Leave "Client for Microsoft Networks" in there if your Windows computer will connect to another windows computer on your home network. This gets rid of protocals you don't need.

Go to http://www.markusjansson.net/exp.html if you're real paranoid in securing XP. Yes, it is actually possible to secure XP.

look, every time i install windows, the more tweaking i do, the more it fucks up and crashes. there's no point having it if it just crashes. even worse when it starts ruining CDs due to lousy dlls or whatever.

All that configuring is just going to make your windows "OS" crash and burn. either get used to it spying on you, or get a real OS that doesn't.

surprisingly linux does not spy on you, and neither does BSD. i don't think MacOS does either to my knowledge, and BeOS probably doesn't either, i have never heard of it doing so.

You windows fanatics always think turning off the phone home stuff is so clever, get an OS that doesn't phone home in the first place! the only reason i go on the internet using windows is because my crappy "software" modem didn't auto install in linux, and i haven't had time to install it properly yet.

And don't get a crack for zonealarm, it will rip off zonelabs and they won't be able to afford to make a newer version.
Plus, get a free firewall with linux. the free version of zonealarm is good enough for windows anyway, by far.

Heh, if his wife isn't a nasty dorky bitch like all of the Linux chix I'm sure the linuxchix site will do no good. Get a load of this Linux Chic(I wouldn't touch her with a 50 ft' pole with VoidMain at the end of it cause she is so nasty looking, LoL).

Thanx so much for your help guys.

I think mandrake is a really nice OS, but seems like its gonna take me awhile to learn it, way too many commands. But hey I have nothing else to do anyways.  Its not like my wife will put-out any.

speaking of which I showed her that liunxchix site, I even told her she could have their
t-shirts, she just looked at me like I was crazy or something. ah what the hell she says no to everything anyways.(yea even that)

I think I better stop I am sharing too much.

thanx again  :D
